I'm pretty new to WH (well, this edition, Forces of Fantasy doesn't count I reckon!)

I have a 1000 point VC army that comes up against my friends Skaven army and I'm struggling to make any kind of dent on it at all. The losses are soooooo bad I could hardly get any worse xD

So I have roughly

L2 Necro. With Book of Arkhan
L1 Necro. With Cursed Book

25 Skeletons with sword\shield
20 Grave G with 2H
2x 5 Wolves
3x Crypt Horrors
10 x Ghouls
5 x Black Knights with lances (no barding)

Mr Skaven has 3 x Slave Hordes (50 or 60 in each) with spear
Warp Lightning Cannon
Doomwheel
Grey Seer
and a smattering of L1 wizards, odd special weapon

My problem last game was due to the Skaven hordes high I and spears, they have sooo many attacks that my GG and skeletons lose about half their numbers before attacking. The CR then makes more of the crumble. By the end of the first combat both units are next to nothing. The necro's are bunkered in the GG and skeletons and died quickly too, leaving me with no general.

I'm thinking that I have too many small units and need fewer bigger ones.. But there's soooooo many Skaven Slaves I can't see any way of putting out enough damage on them.

Any advice? Happy to spend money if it helps!

Cheers

Ash

Dump all the GG for more Horrors and don't forget your Stomps. 5 BKs won't do much, as you've probs already noticed. Three Vargheists with champ are points better spent if you're looking for a shock unit. Both of your Core infantry units look too small. I'd pick ghouls or skellies, basically combine the points into one unit.

Are you limited to those models? At least one lone Spirit Host base should make it into every all comers list you write. And believe me, a Terrorgheist at 1k points is science.

Stomps - nice one, didn't think about those at *all*.
It would be a hard thing to dump both the BK and the GG having recently painted both, I think the BK would go first as they struggle once outside the reach of the generals (no march).
I'd fancy dropping a Necro and popping in a Vampire instead for some melee fun, but will seriously look at the Terrorgheist as well.

Thanks for your help.

Skaven will fall apart once you have destroyed their leadership bubble, take out that General + BSB and then watch as your army overruns them

So how does one go about killing the Skaven General hidden in a horde of 50 slaves? Some kind of character targeting spell (Death magic basic spell?) or is there another way I'm not aware of?

What about using a Rod of Flaming Death? Str 4 on skaven slaves should be pretty scary and keep them from moving (thus stopping his giant chaff block) or, better yet, causing panic and making them flee (provoking the str 4 hit on ALL OF THEM! Muah haha!

Rawson

Putting a character in Slaves is foolish. Slave units explode when beaten in combat. He's asking for it.

My problem has been beating him. Hordes with spears put out a fair few attacks such that my own units have been diminished to the point of not having many attacks back. I think I'm answering my own question on that though - get bigger units. Also, reduce my unit front and not fight him 10 wide to match his unit.

Also, Slaves have that bonus to the Ld, couple with the General's Ld make them fairly robust.
