Hi all!

I've only ever played like one game of warhammer, 4 or so years ago, and would like some help for upcoming build of army. A few friends are going together to start playing some small casual games to begin with, starting at 1000 points soon enough, and I'm still not sure what way to go.

Here is my current go at a list...

1000 Pts - Vampire Counts Roster

1 Vampire, 226 pts
Level 2 Upgrade
Heavy Armour
Shield
Sword of Might
Talisman of Endurance
Quickblood

5 Dire Wolves 40 pts

5 Hexwraiths 160 pts
4 Hexwraiths
1 Hellwraith

40 Skeleton Warriors 230 pts
Full command

31 Zombies 103 pts
Full command

5 Vargheists 240
4 Vargheists
1 Vargoyle

Total Roster Cost: 999

I really have no clue as to what is hard to kill or not, and what is needed. I went with one hero instead of 2 because it seemed quite normal on 1000 points lists.

Hexwraiths because it seemed awesome.

Vargheists... wasn't sure if I wanted to take them, or cairn wraiths + banshee, or Terrorgheist. What is more awsome?

Also, I suppose you run skellies and zombies as horde (10 models wide) units?

And last but not least, skellies, equip with hand weapon for 6+ ward save or spears for extra attacks?

Sorry for all the questions, but I thought I might ask some gamers who has played for a while what's up and whats not.

A decent list, but i would change it abit:

Vampire
Sword of swift slaying (For rerol)
Red fury
Potion of strenght (s8)
Heavy armour
enchanted shield

This guy can total destroy a group of hardhitters in 1 close combat :grave:

Hexwraiths are good, but becareful og magic missile and jazz like a that, it totally destroy thems, try to get a master necro in the list, he is cheap and good support for your units.

Watch out for your Vargheist, remember they are frenzy and can easy be redirected.

Run skellies 5 wide with handweapons and shields, they cant kill anything (almost) and the 6+ is gold

Good points, I will play around a bit with vampire spec when I get home.

About master necromancer, what should be removed to have room for him?

And also, which is better for 1000pts out of the Vargheists, terrorgheist or cairn wraiths(+banshee)? Seems like they all have their own advantages etc, but since I'm quite new I'm not sure what my army is lacking.

Thanks, I really had some problems finding a good guide like that for newbs like me. :) Good to know, I will make my skellies a little bit more long-lasting with your suggestion!

Yeah, skeletons and zombies should always be run 5 wide and very deep. They have no killing power and their value is in their cheap ability to survive. Making them wider means the enemy potentially gets more attacks and your survive-ability goes down...

Vargheists are good, 5 of them should make for a pretty scary unit, but I'd say that if your foes don't have many cannons then a terrorgheist is probably better

Do you know what oppenets you will meet?

Well, I suppose my most active friends will be Orcs and Goblins, and Chaos Warriors. Also Empire, beastmen, skaven, wood elfs and bretonnians (we have more or less chosen one army each to go for, more fun that way). Any aditional tips against any of those teams would most definitely help.

Well against Warriors of chaos, the Terrorgheist is the thing they fear most.

But your list should could handle both of them, just make sure to put the vargheist and Hex in the flank of his units.

The vampire i listed you should easy could kill 5 (if you are unlucky) chaos Warriors in first round of combat.

Make sure to get as many zombies as possible and put them against a unit you dont want to fight, with good magic, they should could holdfor 2-3 turns.
