Hi.

I haven't really been into 40k for a long, long time now, but with the new Necron codex released I figured I'd give it a new shot. As I usually do with my army lists I aim for an army that both looks good and can play well, with the right mind behind it... which may or may not always be myself.

Anyway, I'm following some of my own guidelines for the new Necron codex. I like:
  • The Monolith
  • The Lychguard
  • Immortals with tesla carbines
What I don't like:
  • The new transport vehicles
  • The new gunship vehicles
  • ...none of the new vehicles, really
  • ...except the Triarch Stalker

So it looks like I'm going for a foot-slogging list with a focus on mobile firepower and some little tricks for helping me get around quicker. I also want some close combat units thrown in, because that's fun, too. I'll be playing against friends with various armies, so I'm really just trying to cover as many bases as I can with a single list, most of which I already have.

HQ
Necron Overlord - warscythe, phase shifter, mindshackle scarabs
Royal Court
-Harbinger of Despair - veil of darkness
-Harbinger of Destruction - solar pulse

ELITES
5 Lycheguard - hyperphase swords & dispersion shields (Overlord goes here)
1 Triarch Stalker

TROOPS
10 Immortals - tesla carbines (Harbinger 1 goes here)
10 Immortals - tesla carbines (Harbinger 2 goes here)

FAST ATTACK
3 Canoptek Wraiths - 3 whip coils
8 Canoptek Scarab Swarms

HEAVY SUPPORT
1 Monolith
1 Canoptek Spyder

Totals 1490 points.

I originally had 8 Lychguards in the unit but I figured that switching out 3 of them for a unit of Wraiths seemed like a good trade to increase my mobility and overall punch.

The units speak for themselves, I think; the Immortals are a mobile firebase against enemy infantry, with the Harbingers utilizing their special tricks when necessary. The Lord and Lychguard will advance cautiously to strike against the enemy's own close combat troops, using the Monolith's teleporting ability once it's in position. The Wraiths and Scarabs are fast enough to attack pretty much whatever they please, and they'll be hunting stationary enemy armour and support units. The Wraiths can also lend the Lychguard a solid hand in a joint combat. The Stalker is the chief anti-tank unit in the army, hoping that the Monolith will draw away enough heavy fire to let the Stalker get close enough to use its heat ray. The Spyder will add another Scarab swarm during the first thing, and after that it'll join the nearest close combat it can find.

And that's it. Have you got any alternatives to recommend me? I'm open to suggestions both for this current list and any future ones.

Edit: I'm considering some changes already. How about this:

-drop Overlord and Crypteks, add Obyron as my HQ to be more HTH-focused and with a veil of darkness of his own.
-drop Canoptek Spyder and use the freed up points to add 3 Heavy Destroyers for my anti-tank needs.
-drop 1 whip coil from the wraiths (kind of required anyway, I'll be 5 points over with the other changes in effect) and swap the Stalker's heat ray out for the particle shredder. I think that'll give it a stronger role in my army, blasting the enemy infantry with a large template which will also enhance the shooting from my tesla Immortals.

No Vod harbringer or transport for your Lychguard? They're not the quickest unit around and while tough but would greatly benefit from a ress orb. You only have to make the WBB roll once to earn back its points(and more). Lychguard + Overlord with Orb. I prefer to massive kit out my overlord with semp weave, shifter, orb, mindshackle, scythe and orb. Lots of points, I know, but also extraordinarily tough and quite simply will not die(unless you're unlucky).

If you choose Obyron you cannot take any court models as he doesn't count as an Overlord(but would make your lychguard a real powerhouse).

Skip the high amount of scarabs and convert some into more Spyders(you can always make some scarabs the first turn).

I much prefer the heavy gauss cannon on the stalker. AP1 is nice but S9 is nicer and crusially have a significant range advantage. The particle shredder is interesting but you already have enough anti-troop shooting but lack proper anti-tank.

The main issue though is the lychguard and their lack of tansport/VoD and the lone spyder. I'd drop some immortals and scarabs to add 1 more lychguard and beef up the spyder unit. A unit will perform the CC guard duty better than lychguard in its current config as they can advance with the main bulk.

There is a Monolith for them to use, but that's also what caught my eye about Obyron - he's got an improved VoD of his own, which would go well with the unit.

By dropping both Crypteks and reducing the Swarms down to base limit I've got 190 points to make something worthwhile of. I'd like to get some Heavy Destroyers into the list to give me my anti-tank shooting. Putting the heavy gauss cannon on the Stalker feels quite unsatisfying to me, making little use of its targeting relay... unless, of course, I've got some Heavy Destroyers along with the Stalker to benefit from its synergy ability. If I also lose 1 whip coil from the Wraiths I can fit in 3 Heavy Destroyers and the heavy gauss cannon on the Stalker. I don't think I can make anything decent of my Spyder unit with these resources though, not without digging heavily into the Immortals. Perhaps I should drop it to again bump the Scarab Swarms up in numbers? Or perhaps I should forego the Swarms entirely and strive got fit 3 Spyders into the list instead?

Ah, right. I just glossed right over the monolith.

I'd probably drop the lone spyder. I like mine with particle beamers myself. Cost goes up but they are suprisingly accurate(yay for re-rolls).

While the Stalker's ability might get lost on the general units since you do not have any gauss on your troops the only true AT you have would be the monolith(which is quite slow) and stalkers 24" gun. Also haven't heard much good about tesla on immortals but if they work for you, go for it. Though if you want serious damage output I'd consider the annihilation barge. It would also give you more target with an armour value and thus not making the monolith or stalker the obvious targets for your opponents high strength shots/attacks. It is also very good at stun/locking transports(and should also *always* have the gauss cannon upgrade due to even more chances at glancing vehicles). So far I have only proxies them but my next order will include 2 annilations barges.
Given the stun/lock role it has, it has some serious synergy with scarabs and wraiths which easily will rip a vehicle apart due to auto-hits. Not to mention it is extremely useful against horde armies. At less than 100 points, it is a bargain.

As for scarabs I'd consider splitting them in groups of 5-6. This means your opponent cannot wipe them out in one go.

If you go with Destroyers I recommend using some warriors to give them a cover screen. They will attract a lot of attention.

I would drop the spyder, sure he has 3 wounds but he wont last long and is an easy kill point what I would suggest is getting 2 more scarab base's and a cheap cryptek to make that royal court KP harder to get and also you could put the VoD cryptek in the lychguard unit to give them some extra mobility.
