I'm quite new to collecting VC models, and have painted up and finished around 2,000pts worth of troops so far.
Below is my starter base list, but am not sure whether the list i have so far will be effective enough. My opponants have mainy Ogre kingdom, empire and skaven armies. Can anyone help me make the right tactical choices?

9 GRAVE GUARD - 173 PTS

ROYAL STANDARD OF STRIGOS

NECROMANCER - 120 PTS
EXTRA SPELL

15 SKELETONS - 180 PTS

15 SKELETONS - 165 PTS

7 BLACK KNIGHTS - 261 PTS

total 1504pts (oops!)

Your vampire's item/power aren't very good on a hero-level character. I'd suggest Flayed Hauberk, probably a Sword of Might if you don't take a great weapon (Avatar of Death bloodline). Infinite Hatred+Walking Death would be better on him however.

While GG are good, you probably shouldn't take them in a 1500point game (especially if you have BKs already). Drop the BK or GG unit (if BK, make GG bigger and 6 or 7 wide with GWs).

Drop the spears on the skeletons if you need points. Get an upgrade for your corpse cart...balefire is AMAZING. It'll really hurt Ogre magic, and help against skaven and empire magic as well.

Lose barding on BKs if you keep them, they still take the move penalty with it and it's 4 points each for a unit designed to fight one combat at a time, that you can heal.

Wraith's are golden..take a banshee though. It will destroy OK and Skaven...and hurt empire flanks where the general is not at.

*Group the heroes TOGETHER, I didn't even notice you had necro's till I was almost done with this post and had to edit it a bit.

Thanks for the quick response, apologies for the character grouping!

Will most likely drop the black knights, just because its a lot of points that i could use better.

Am never sure whether its better to take extra vamps or necromancers in smaller point games, during playtesting my army everybody seems to make a b-line straight for them and they don't last long!!! They are very cheap to use though.

Will definitely take your advice on the banshee, most VC players rate them very highly.

My grave guard are the last edition models, which is why i gave them hw & shields, but will consider GW against less shooty opponents.

Not sure about some ghoul units to replace the black knights, but i'll take you up on the balefire head's up

I would drop the Doom Wolf... one str 3 attack for 10 points wont do much. I would rather add a 6th wolf or save your 20 points. The important for wolves is simply to "be there" as you only need 3 to negate rank bonuses (US 2 each).

QFT. 5 dire wolves @ 48 points. They are fast cavalry, you can use them to redirect, to marchblock, to hunt mages, or simply to disturb your enemy, they are only 2*48=96 points! I used them that way in a 1.5k tournament I had last saturday, and although they did not survive any game, they did their job very efficiently (making me the 3rd only 7 points away the best general :))

I would suggest you to have a Varghulf instead of the wraiths (maybe is a matter of tastes) but if you take him alongside the BK, you could drop the standard of hellish vigour, since the Varghulf will allow them to march.

If you definetly use the CC, take the Balefire. It's gold.

Weell, actually they're a mere forty points... 5*8=40 points ;) So you might aswell drop two skeletons or so, and you can afford a whole new unit of the loving furballs.

I wholeheartedly agree with the benefits of dirt cheap, fearless fast cavalry. And I thought my Goblin Wolf Riders were good at 65 points a bunch, coming fresh of the shelf with Ld 6. How wrong was I :D

My bad. 40 points, that's it. Which means that 2 units will make only 80 points. Dirt cheap and effective.
