Hi

I've got a 1500 point game next Tuesday against some Ogres. He is a beginner player like myself so I don't want to take something too nasty against him. How is this:

Konrad = 145
Wight King - BSB = 100
Necromancer on corpse cart - extra spell, Book of Arkan, Lodestone = 205
30 Skeletons - Full Command and Banner Endless Nightmare = 285
36 Zombies = 144
3 Spirit Hosts = 195
4 Wraiths and 1 Banshee = 275

Total = 1499

Maybe I am a little low on the magic side.

I don't know what he'll be using but I think he just has Ogres, none of the little guys. Some of the ones with guns and normal warrior types. Sorry I don't know much about the army to be able to tell you what they were.

I made a mistake with my cut and paste and missed a vampire off.

Vampire - Spectral Form = 150
Konrad = 145
Wight King - BSB = 100
Necromancer on corpse cart - extra spell, Book of Arkan, Lodestone = 205
30 Skeletons - Full Command and Banner Endless Nightmare = 285
36 Zombies = 144
3 Spirit Hosts = 195
4 Wraiths and 1 Banshee = 275

My thoughts were to have the etheral vampire with the wraiths and the spirits and attack on one flank. The rest of the army on the other flank.

That's actually about the nastiest possible list you could have come up with to fight Ogres. He won't likely have more than one magic weapon in his army (if any), so to take over 600 points of ethereals, plus Konrad von Carstein (who can kill 10 Ogres by himself in one turn), is way over the top.

So yeah, take this list if you want to stomp him into the ground so hard that he'll probably never want to play again ;)

What EvC said, Konrad is an Ogre players doom (especially with the FAQ). Combined with Ethereals, unless he has a very strange list he's going to have a very hard time doing anything against you.

Well much as I'd really like to win a game, as I've been losing a lot against nasty armies, I don't think I could use a list that he is going to hate me for tayloring to mash him.

How can I make a more ogre friendly list that should still see me win the game but not stomp him into the ground so hard that he'll probably never want to play again?

Me thinks you have 1 too many characters .... under 2k is 3 heroes, no Lords if I remember correctly.
You might have to re-work your list.

Count Duckula:

Personally I'd suggest adding in a unit of Direwolves for March Blocking and wiping out fleeing enemies (both good strategic moves against Ogres and worth learning).

I'd drop the Spectral Vampire, and Spirit Hosts saving 350 points and bringing your characters down to 3 as Roke has spotted.
Then add some Direwolves, a small unit of Ghouls (10-15) for flank charging with poison attacks and then depending on what you have Black Knights / Blood Knights / Grave Guard to fill points.

You've still got Konrad and the Wraith units which will give him a headache, but that's much more balanced over all, and if you win it will be down to how you play not your list stomping on him :D

Unless the Ogre player is planning on bringing a load of Yheetis to the fight. I haven't looked at the Ogre army in any particular detail, but do they not have magical attacks?

In any way, since Yheetis seem to be quite rare in Ogre armies, it'd just be nicer if you toned down your number of ethereal units.

Good on you for doing so! :)

OK, thanks for your advice here is what the list looks like now.

Konrad = 145
Wight King - BSB = 100
Necromancer on corpse cart - extra spell, Book of Arkan, Lodestone = 205
30 Skeletons - Full Command and Banner Endless Nightmare = 285
32 Zombies = 128
5 Dire Wolves - Doom Wolf = 50
15 Ghouls - Ghast = 128
6 Black Knights - Barding & Standard = 184
4 Wraiths and 1 Banshee = 275

1500 on the nose.

New plan is to use the Wraiths as a screen to protect Konrad from any shooting use the ghouls and knights as flankers and the wolves to try and catching any fleeing Ogres.

Is that less nasty now? I could replace the wraiths with a Varghulf and then get two more units of wolves as another idea?

I think that it looks alot better for the Ogre player with your new list. Now he'll atleast get to fight back at you.

Konrad might be extremely vicious when fighting Ogres, but even a single Ogre Bull armed with a great weapon stand a decent chance of felling him in combat.

An Ogre Bull with a great weapon is an Irongut ;) But yeah, Konrad is very fragile, which is why it's not so bad to take him.

I think the magic in the list is going to be pretty ineffective at this point... plus Balefire's always a good thing to have against Ogres, it's only really nasty if he's maxed out his magic. Remember to keep a screen near Konrad for most the game, you don't want him running off to die (assuming your opponent is smart enough to flee from the charge).

Wovles can't kill only block and flank. The wraith unit as it stants has way more killing power than a Vargulf. 12 attacks vs. 5 and You will need the killing power. Your core units will all have a hard time wounding ogres.

As an OK player I can say you won't need the magic to win unless he goes really heavy on Butchers. The Wraiths and Blood Knights are going to present some serious problems for your opponent unless he fields something that can take out the Cav and Etherals (only magic weapons are on Butchers, Tyrant/Bruisers, Yhetees, and possibly Maneaters with Caythan longswords?).

I wouldn't want to play that list.

Remember that having Konrad being the only Vampire is forcing you into a Ld 6 General. Note on the army composition page (before the army list entries) it notes that a Vampire must be the General.
