RE: 1600 pts - flaming Vampires v Skavens. Suggestions ?

Here are some suggestions. I virtually always play against the dreaded Ratmen, so I have some experience:

1) You will almost definitely see a Grey Seer. A lvl 4 caster right out of the bag is hard to resist, especially at over 1.5k. If you don't see one, then lucky you I suppose. But either way, I think your Combat-oriented Vampire Lord is going to be outclassed by a Grey Seer. I would rather see a tooled-out Magic Vampire Lord in your list. Close Combat Lords can be tempting, especially now that we have the +2/3 attack swords from the BRB, which are just gravy when combined with Red Fury. But the rest of your army will suffer for it. You need a lvl 3 caster at least, and maybe a Lvl 4, although you likely wouldn't have enough points for MotBA if you do that.

2) No Great Weapons on the GG? This may actually work because the Skaven have been known to come at people with large hordes of cheap, weak infantry in the past, but S6 is still great. It will completely cancel out a Clanrat's Armor Save, and it will wound both them and Plague Monks on 2's. I would go GW's if you can scrounge the points.

3) You may want to field your Ghoul units as a horde. 2x23 units won't really hold their own against a 40-50 man Clanrat horde. With a Caster Lord, you MAY just be able to keep them alive with enough SuH and IoN, but I wouldn't count on it. Go Horde for survivability.

4) This is more of a tactics suggestion. You need to keep your Blood Knights screened from missile fire at all costs. Virtually everything in the Skaven army can simply buy Slings to gain shooting. Plus, they have several annoying options for ranged attacks. I always field a KoBK unit with the Flag of the Blood Keep when I take them to protect against such things, but you don't really have the points for it. Just keep them behind terrain for as long as possible, and get them stuck into combat fast. If you don't, they will suffer the consequences.

Well, that's my 2 cents. Hope this helps, and I certainly wish you luck against the rats.

RE: 1600 pts - flaming Vampires v Skavens. Suggestions ?

ok. i've changed my roster a little. :)
i think it's better like that:

Vampire Lord 3lv,(Lore of Death)
The Flayed hauberk
Dispell Scroll
Dark Acolyte
Master of The Black Arts
Summon Ghouls

Vampire
Blood Dreinker
Infinite Hatred
Dread Knight

19 ghouls+ghast
19 ghouls+ghast
zombie horde (20)

Grave Guard x20
FCG
War Banner

Blood Knights (x5)
Banner of Eternal Flame
musican

please tell mi what do you think. :)

u still got nothin to screen the BK. i think i would maybe use Black Knights or maybe Boost ur Grave Guards to 30 models and then boosted ur Ghoul units to 30 each at least,. or one 40 and one on 20.

am having the same problem 2000 pt against skaven tried a gg horde but it was destoryed by rat ogres. let us know how you get on

How do you get Lore of Death without taking Forbidden Lore?

oops ... you're right. I thought that a vampire can take spells from the lore of death, or the lore of vampires ... Now I checked, that can only be from the lore of vampires.

ok. nevermaind.
I realized that the blood knighs's - will not solve the problem with the adomination ... have the same initiative, so both will be crushed ... : /
I came up with something like this:

1 Vampire Lord (lore of death)
General; Magic Level 3
Dispel Scroll
The Arkayne: Master of the Black Arts
The Arkayne: Forbidden Lore
Flayed Hauberk
Tallisman of Lycni

1 Vampire (lore of beasts)
Magic Level 1
The Arkayne: Forbidden Lore
Power Stone

20 Crypt Ghouls
20 Crypt Ghouls
20 Zombies

20 Grave Guard
FCG

1 Black Coach
1 Varghulf

Models in Army: 85

Total Army Cost: 1600

or this:

1 Vampire Lord (lore of death)
General; Magic Level 3
Dispel Scroll
The Arkayne: Master of the Black Arts
The Arkayne: Forbidden Lore
Flayed Hauberk
Tallisman of Lycni

1 Vampire (lore of beasts)
Magic Level 1
The Arkayne: Forbidden Lore
Power Stone

20 Crypt Ghouls
20 Crypt Ghouls
20 Zombies

20 Grave Guard
FCG

4 Cairn Wraiths
1 Varghulf

Models in Army: 87
Total Army Cost: 1600

which one is better ?

Woot woot? no Lore Of Vampires? U MAD?

lore of death - for hunt a oponnent characters
lore of beast - for charge with a vampire, and change him into the dragon... :)

inkhantation of nehek - it's a basic vampire spell, and every vampire konws it. More spells from the lore of vampire i don't need. :)

in roolbook is written that every vampire knows instinctively that spell if I remember correctly (i will check it).

If i had to choose one it would be the first. However here are some things to think about:
-Every vampire knows IoN (pg. 38 of vamp book). However if you only have one lore to choose from as in low point games I would definitely save the points on forbidden lore and just add levels and MotB to your wizard and keep lore of vamps(it is great for killing hordes with curse of years, people always seem to forget this).
-I personally would also swap cairn wraiths for black coach, sure etheral is great and all, however keep in mind next to every shooting thing in the skaven infantry is magical shots. bye bye 200 point, T3, 4 wound unit. Plus coach sucks up magical pool and can be etheral himself :devil2:, if that is what you are looking for of coarse.
-plus I would say deduct 10 ghouls from one unit and add to the other to make a hordeable unit of ghouls, and use the group of 10 as the bunker unit.
-dont buy zombies, make them if needed (they move faster this way xD), add to other ghoul units.
-I would say ward save>armor save on your lord if you plan on being a primary caster with him. HoC is great to make those rats hit your precious little ghouls on 5s(or 4s even)!
