Hi everyone,

I am new to this forum, but I have been reading up on some of the threads here and there....

I am fairly new to WH and was wondering if you guys could lend me some advice..

I am running a 1k army at the moment and my friend is playing Lizardmen and I cant seem to figure out how to stop him! :mad2:

Here is my list that I am currently running:

General Vampire
Dark Acolyte
LotD
HoC
black periapt
total 185

Vampire 2
AoD
infinite Hatred
Blood drinker
total 180

1 necromancer
55

2 skeleton regiments at 10x
w/ FC
total 200

5x dire wolves
45

10x Grave Guard w/ FC
total 150

1 Varghulf
175

grand total - 991

My friend is running an army that consists of
2 regiments of 12 Saurus Warriors w/ spears at 6 wide
1 ancient stegadon with a skint priest and EotG :(
scar vet as general
3 terradon riders

Sooo....

I dont seem to have anything to counter his darn Stegadon, that beast just tramples through all my troops, if I throw my varghulf at it, my skeletons regiments seem to get destroyed in 1 or 2 turns from his saurus warriors with their spears, as he gets 24 attacks to my 6 :( The Varghulf does tear through his saurus warrios if i flank them, but that leaves nothing to counter the stegadon..... help anyone??

Thanks much!

First off, Welcome to the forum!

Steggie is a dangerous foe indeed. Thankfully, I've rarely had to face one. Though, in a games where I've had to, a big Knight unit has done the trick. Granted this was NOT with my VC army (Grail Knights once, and Cold Ones once). Maybe try a unit of Knights and see how it goes.

Also, I've heard people tell stories of Banshee's wail taking down big uglies... might want to consider that as well.

You should not (and arguably CAN NOT) rely on your troops to kill things. Treat the Skeleton blocks as extra wounds and SCR (static combat res - ie. bonuses from ranks, stds, etc). You should only rely on specials, rares, and characters to do the bulk of your damage.

Yup, the EoTG is a nasty customer. Especially when it decides to fart , impact hit, and charge a unit. It was once able to mow down a unit of 30 skeletons down to a rank of 5. (thank the maker for Lord of the Dead!)

There are two schools of thought to deal with the engine. One is to tie it up with a tarpit. Recommended for this tactic is summoned zombies. It's a high maintenance maneuver that will tie up one, and maybe 2 casters from your own army but I think is the less costly of the options.

I've been able to tie it up and kill the skink priest with a powered up Black Coach (with at least Killling Blow / Ethereal active), and I was able to do it with a Wight king riding with a unit of black knights as well. I have yet to successfully do it with the Banshee since a canny Lizzy player (like my regular opponent) will throw as much magic her way as he can.

Just remember, as long as the Priest on top is dead, the thing can't fart and that goes a long way in mitigating the threat is poses.

As for the Saurus, I have never been able to defeat them by killing them. I have only been able to defeat them by autobreaking the unit with static CR, then running them down / catching them with light cav or bats. Even block of Grave Guard have trouble with them.

The key to VC is to have enough units to take it in the 'nads and still have enough units left over to autobreak them via Static CR. Standard Bearers, War banner, Banner of Dead Legion, and Banner of Endless Nightmare all help in that regard. and ranks... lots of them. Fear is your best friend!

As it stands now, I think that your infantry units are not bulky enough to leverage SCR, and since they are so small, you run the chance of having them wiped out before you have a chance to raise replacements.

SD

PS: I *have* heard that the VC vs Lizzy is a bad matchup, since lizzies pretty much cancel out VC advantages since you can't rely on Fear or power dice to save you. I've got a 30% success rate against them, and every time was due to the EotG being taken out. YMMV

Interesting that VC is rendered almost incubnent vs lizardmen... not cool, but its a fun challenge for sure!

So first off thank you for the advice, now that I've researched a bit more, I have come up with this new army list:

General Vampire (mage):
Dark Acolyte
LotD
total -145

Combat Vampire:
Red Fury
Flayed Hauberk
Sword of Battle
total - 190

Wight King
total - 75

Skeleton regiment 10x
1x SB
total - 88

20x Zombie
total - 80

18x GG
1x SB
1x Champ
total - 240

1x Varghulf
total - 175

total - 993

So my idea behind this would be to put the wight king in my skeleton unit to help it win combat, put the combat vamp into the grave guard to help it maul the saurus warriors, varghulf to flank the saurus warriors. I included the zombie regiment so i would not have to start from a small raised dead regiment and bulk it up, I would alrdy have a large unit and bulk it from there and also be able to focus on just one skeleton regiment to bulk from the get go with my general.

There's my plan! what do you guys think?

Sure did :) Had to cut the game short due to time constraints, but I had his army on the run and my full unit of GG combat vamp and varghulf and a nice bunker unit of zombies left with my general :-D

The GG with the combat vamp was fantastic, the vamp destroyed about 4 saurus warriors per combat phase and the GG got 1 or 2 more on avg. I just held his steggie in check with my zombies and skeleton regiment. The Wight King got off enough hits to kill off his priest, before he was slain himself, but the EoTG was rendered useless. Then just kept my zombie unit alive with IoN while my GG and Varghulf flanked.

Lizards arent so scary any more! :)

GG are key!
