I hate posting lists as its a lot of stuff you need to read and your local game can vary quite a bit. Also, its a matter of playstyle and iterpatation. However, here i am again, posting one. just to see what you guys think about it.

wants: decent list which is pretty competitive, but not autowin
donts: great weapon graveguard or any real deathstar tactics. also, no terrorgheists or mortis engine kinds

it will be used to go to tourneys and stuff and is more a thing of, what to paint and buy in the next 3 months rather. if i miss any real units or such please notify me. here it goes

this will lead me to exactly 2499 points.

no things im concerned about is magicheavy armies as they will probably eat me alive and im not sure +6 on dispel is good enough. only thing to really watch out for are magic missles so dispelling will be 'easy' to target.

also, will the unit of cairn wraiths be big enough? i dont know where to get anymore points from...
should i team up the spirit hosts?
and i was wondering if i should drop some models to get summon creatures of the night on the lord... but i guess that wouldnt be the best idea. im really liking the bat swarms, but they do so little :( im affraid i have to chop them from the list.
they will probably get replaced by another 20 zombies + banner and musician for tarpitting.

please let me know if this has some potential in your eyes and what you would like to change about this list. I will be trying this one out tonight btw. so im pretty stoked to see whats going to happen.
 
Hmm...there are a couple of questions I'd like to ask before giving a final judgement

Firstly, are those 4 bats in two units of two? If not, why not?

Secondly, do the balefires stack? I thought they didn't but I may be wrong
 
First off I'm not a huge fan of putting dispel scrolls on my lvl 4 necromancers for various instances of blowing themselves up first turn so maybe put it on the stirgoi and give the cursed book to the necromancer, also is your necromancer taking death or vampires

I run spirit hosts 2 units composed of a single spirit host base as well, nothing is funnier then seeing giant monsters stuck in combat with a tiny spirit host.

would avoid the bat swarms/summon creatures of the night in favor of the zombie unit, because zombies make a very nice tarpit and would be a nice speed bump to go along with the other unit of zombies

not a huge fan of 2 corpse carts, well corpse carts in general, but I can definatly see a use in increasing that bubble of -1 casting and getting asf on those crypt ghouls is just beautiful!

Can definitely see a lot of potential in this list (I find strigoi lists to be very competitive and 2 varghulfs are just nasty!) good luck on your game tonight! (Unless you have already played it then I hope you did good!)xD
 
I don't like corpsecarts, single bahnshees, batswarms or wraiths in a unit. Your skeleton block seems out of place. Things to consider given your criteria at the top:
1) Crypt horrors
2) Flying circus
3)Monstermash

I'm going to guess that you'll go for the crypt horrors because they seem the most in keeping with your ghoul theme. As far as your current list goes, I feel confident in saying that a good opponent would isolate the varghulfs, neutralize the lord and grab the easy point proffered by your wraiths. Good luck, with your demands you are going to need it.
 
not bragging, but i won tonight with this list. mainly because my oponent only got death and shadow magic getting very little magic missles.
also, he was kind of low on combat characters with magic weapons so my stuff really shined.
the nice thing about the 4 big cairnwraiths was that they totally kick behinds when no character is in there. they have enough power to take out nasty things on their own. the hosts do the same but worse, for cheaper points.

i didnt even think about not stacking the -1 balefire so we ruled is as -2 giving met +6 on dispel most of the time. which rocked. if this is not the case illhave to revise this.

I played against beastmen. my ethereals really made his big blocks hold op for a long time wereas my varghulfs CW's and banshee charging out of the unnit making his supports go down. then it was just almost my entire army (except my spirit hosts, wolves) with some damaged varghulfs against his 3 close comabt blocks. being able to use my support vaghulfs really kicked combat into my favour.

Im pretty scared of the magic missles i might face. and if CC doesnt stack balefire i will probably drop 1 and get all CW's as hero's and add another zombie unit.
Its not that i want to go ghoultheme. rather von carstein. however. lordchoices dont allow me to take lvl 4 vampire lord and a combat lord. so this is why i have the ghoulking.

so, i dont know, is it faq=ed that the balefire doesnt stack? otherwise, i might have a problem...
 
I don't think I saw it mentioned above, but don't put ur scroll on ur lv 4, if u fail to dispel on a turn, I don't think you can use the scroll( I might be wrong)

i am almost certain the balefire does not stack because i think it says if 1 or more... but i a maybe wrong don't have access to my book right now.

Magic missiles are a problem but i wouldn't be to worried about somebody wasting magic dice to drop such low point models and as for the cairn wraiths somebody has to get pretty lucky to drop them all in 1 go

you have plenty ethereal in this list so if your smart you will be able to find the means of bogging down anything that needs to be bogged down

and good point Kevin i kind of mentioned it but didn't mention if you fail a dispel attempt you cannot use it
 
i didnt know all the ranges of the book. but last 4 battles my necro was way up front. to close to combat for my liking. thats why i gave him the scroll. as for my dispelling, i usually throw way too many dice at attempts just to be sure to dispel them. i know there can be the odd occassions where he cant read the scroll anymore. I guess i have to check ranges for the cursed book...

i will look into the CC thing -1 stacking. if not possible, ill see what i can do with the extra points :D

Balefire definitely does not stack.
Dont know how your doing the dispel math, with a CC and a lvl 4, you would be dispelling on an effective +5, if you left the original casting dice total + lvl unmodified. This is a strange way to do it, as the -1 from the CC is applied to the casting result, which may lead to spell being unsuccessfully cast.

if you do replace the corpse cart (which I am almost certain you will because the ability will not stack) I would like to suggest taking another banshee for the simple reason that screaming is one of our best answers to cavalry and heavily armored units, beast men I know aren't too heavily armored but if you went up against lets say a empire cavalry death star it might be pretty difficult too take them out.

Granted our combat lords are very good at this role, having a couple of screams could be a very big help.

the +6 on dispel has the -2 (that doesnt stack) added to it. so my lvl 4 against his lvl 4 (which gives him -2) so i get 4+(-2 on his roll) a +6 on dispel if you know what i mean! ;):P

at the 100 something point i got to spend, i think its a great idea to add another banshee. though i will be a bit low on zombies then :P no additional unit :(
I will have about 10 points left which probably will go into summon creatures of the night just for laughs. i dont think 10 points will mean that much of a difference.
another thing im thinking about is making all the cairn wraiths heroes. this will cost me an additional 40 points, so ill have to drop 30 points. so i guess 2 fell bats will drop.

what do you guys think? keep CW's seperate heroes or not?
 
For the cairn wraiths making them heroes will definitely protect them a lot better because you could put them all in the skelly unit along with the banshee to make a wall of ethereal!

But at the same time you are also down two drops, which shouldn't be much of a problem because with the amount of units you have you should be winning the deployment against most armies, plus having those 4 wraiths as hero's would definitely help because if you are in dire need to tie up a giant monster you can just single charge out with 1 wraith and be done with it instead of throwing the whole wraith squad at it.

also be warned if that skelly squad gets side flanked you can pretty much kiss those ethereals goodbye.
