hi there,

I just wonder what to do against an DE who is playing 2 hydras in a 2000 point match. imo it's lame to play so, but he can do...
how to get these hydras down with their very hard attacks, mass wounds and still ward saves?

cant go for them with normal units as they will suffer. unfortunately we dont have any shooting so we have to face them earlier or later. my idea was about grave guard with great weapons and mb flaming attacks. so if they will hit, they will surely wound them. but dont know if this is the best way. any suggestions?
also thought about a frostblade, as this would instantly kill the hydra if I'm right, but if this doesnt work with first attack, the vampire count will surely be slain down... so very risky.

would be nice to hear your ideas or experience.

Sounds like tarpit time to me.

Zombies here there and everywhere- particularly right in front of those Hydras. Don't they have to charge stuff they can see or something like that? Don't throw points at his points, it's not how Vampires work- throw air at his points, and throw your points at what little he can afford after paying for two big baddies.

I have also played against a 2000 pt dark elf list with 2 hydras, there only 175 each so they still have plenty to spend on the rest of their army, A vampire Lord with the balefire spike and redfury and infinate hatred makes short work of them and it also leaves you plenty of points for armor/ other stuff. Grave guard with GW will do some damage but i don't think they'll kill it outright so it will get chance to strike back which will probably killl a lot of them.
The staff of damnation could help when used with GG with GW/black knights as it would give you 2 chances to attack it.
You could tarpit them with zombies but it would take quite a lot of magic to keep both of them pitted.

Good thing Dark Elves don't have any magic items that help prevent the casting of powerful spells, eh?

...

Oh yeah.

Haha yeah magic is a worry against Dark Elves. Even if they play no mages they can still take the ring of hotek and mess you around with it.

blood knights with banner of hellfire will sort out hydras with ease, hitting on 3's, wounding on 3's, no regen save = dead hydra.

You mean wounding on 2's it's only toughness 5. If you manage to hit your Blood Knights into a Hydra though you won't even need the hellfire banner.

A Casty vampire lord with forbidden lore-->Lore of Metal will make short work of them as well! Just cast the last spell from the lore and watch them die! :vampire2:

I didn't think the Hydra had a good normal armour save, so wouldn't that spell be pretty ineffective?

he has a 4+ scaly skin, so the spell is not that great.

my experience against hydra's, wraiths work fine (specialy with HoC from your general) bloodkinights kill it with ease, zombies can hold him up nicely (once again HoC from your general works great) GG with shields. win on CR.

as long as those hydra's are not together, I am not that afraid (maybe the breath atack) otherwise, Ill sacrefice some wolves to redirect atleast one of them.

I faced a monster mash DE army yesterday with my zombie dragon list and the opponent just couldn't compete - mostly due to my 6 pd of beast magic and book of arkhan.

A dark elf army like this one, is based on the units beside the hydras.
Since so many players focus on killing the beast the rest of his army can easily and unharmed move up.
Last week a mate of mine was playing a 1000 points game with a hydra, he placed his hydra in a corner because he feared that the beast would be shot.
The result was that the rest of his army was slaughtered. I would recommend eather tarpitting the hydra or bait it.
The rest of his army will be worth much more.

Haha never under estimate your opponent to the point where you think you'll be able to charge a hydra with something like Blood Knights!

Blood Knights are generally one of the worst units to take against DE, as they have two really good redirection units (Dark Riders and Harpies), and few players go into battle with three of each.

Just don't make the mistake of tossing Varghulfs at it, it'll get butchered.

Wraiths work well, as it doesn't generate any SCR except for outnumber.

I disagree a varghulf shouldn't get butchered by a hydra. Should only take roughly 2 wounds from the hydra and 1 from the handlers so you should only take 2 wounds. You should get two wounds through one of which will be saved so you'll lose by 2 with out number meaning it should hold the thing up an entire turn. Maybe not the most preferable outcome but it should keep the hydra out of the game long enough for you to either deal with it or get things out of its way.
