Ok, so I like all your input on how you would build this version of a 2500 Undead Legions using Armies of the End Times limits. Here are the other requirements:

1) You have to use Nagash
2) You have to use the Black Periapt
3) You need to work in at least one Morghast unit.

Lets see them!

I'm interested to see the feedback on this. Not sure my Mortarch will be ready for tomorrow but I still have time to finish putting Nagash together will be taking one or the other in to the store for battles tomorrow. Might even possibly be the first to use Nagash on the table in store.

TBH I don't even have the foggiest as to how to go about building a force around Nagash.

One thing I noticed Nagash does to a list. He cuts out a lot of essentials. You have to revert to relying on your core troops even more and have trouble getting in those key characters and strong units. Nagash then becomes all about summoning which means you sacrifice a well rounded army for the chance you can summon an army. Its is a fair trade off.

First the List:

The Grand Legion of Nagash
Lords (1225)

Nagash - 1000 points
Master Necromancer, Lvl 3 Lore of Vampires, Black Periapt, Ironcurse Icon - 225 points
Heroes (169)
Wight King, Dragonhelm, Dawnstone, Shield, Barded Skeletal Steed, Battle Standard Bearer - 169 points
Core (630)
5 Skeleton Horse Archers, Full Command - 100 points
5 Skeleton Horse Archers, Full Command - 100 points
5 Skeleton Horse Archers, Full Command - 100 points
5 Skeleton Horse Archers, Full Command - 100 points
20 Zombies - 60 points
25 zombies, Full Command - 85 points
25 zombies, Full Command - 85 points
Special (160)
2 Morghast Harbringers - 160 points
Rare (310)
Hierotitan - 175 points
Casket of Souls - 135

The list wants to dominate the magic phase so Nagash can summon whatever units are necessary to drown the enemy in a never-ending tide of Undead.
I'll explain the choices per unit below:

Nagash - No explaining to do here, the list is built around him.

Master Necromancer - He is the Black Periapt caddy, his main goal is to expand the Zombies and make sure I can guarantee Van Hel's Dance Macabre and still get the juicy spells from other lores for Nagash.

Wight King - With Nagash and the Morghasts countering crumble, I wanted to add a BSB for the -4 to crumble in the army. In this configuration he has a 1+ rerollable armour save, which means he can actually hold entire blocks in infantry on his own. That horde of 40 Halbediers? Park this guy in front of them and they are going nowhere.

Skeleton Horse Archers - In my humble opinion the best chaff the Undead Legions has to offer. Trough scouting I dictate early game movement which I think is very important since Nagash needs a turn or two to build his army.

Zombies - The unit without command is the bunker for the Master Necromancer, the other two form the main tarpits.

Morghast Harbringers - These two stay just behind the front line for the reduced crumble. I think that with the correct spells to buff them they can be used as excellent character assassins. For example: Birona's Timewarp and Djaf's Cursed Blades means you have ten attacks with a 1/3rd chance of killing blow and Always Strike First.

Hierotitan - This guys serves two purposes: 1) he is going to boost Nagash's casting. 2) he is going to catch cannonballs.

Casket of Souls - More Power Dice for Nagash and the bound spell is great.

So, first attempt, I think it can definitely be improved upon. What do you think?

Really need to get a Casket of Souls put together... got the bits to do something for it... Today will be finishing off my impaled zombie unit fillers, making my other two morghasts and starting work on my zombie giant/ heirotitan.

I bought some ghouls on ebay and the seller had made the champion on a 40mm base coming out of a cave. I think I'm just going to use that.

So, super powerful magic, tarpits and redirectors with shooting. Nice! The BSB does seem vulnerable to magic and shooting. Enough his and he is going down.

Lol. So to get on topic, show us your 2500 pt list that is going to use that converted casket of should.

You too @Banat ;)
FINE.

Nagash
Master Nec level 3 LoV- Black Periapt, Book of Arkhan, ICI

Core-
4x5 Direwolves
8x Skeleton Chariots, FC, flaming banner

Special-
Corpse Cart - Balefire

Rare-
2x2 Morghast Archai (maybe combined to one unit with 2x2 ranks)
Casket of Souls

Any list with Nagash needs an 8-crypt horror cannonball wall, IMHO. That and a pair of level 2 necros with a hierotitan to put wounds back on him.

The periapt is just unnecessary in this list, though. He can already hold back 4 dice himself...do you really need to hold back a full half your maximum magic phase?

Well, the periapt can be used by any wizard, whereas nagash only can use his. Additionally, the periapt can be used in the enemy magic phase, whereas Nagash staff cannot be. Thirdly, the periapt's stored dice immediately enter the pool , whereas nagash's dice can be stored for how long he pleases, allowing up to 16 power dice without use of lore of death.

I don't have the Nagash book yet, but I thought you have to declare which lores Nagash is picking from at the list building stage? i.e. 3 from LoV and 2 from Light. Or is he such a beast you can choose before the game?

As far as I can tell, you would do it at spell generation, just before deployment.

@najo I play-tested a list with these requirements. Will have a batrep up today.
