Looking at the TK book and I'm hating the fact that they only have 8 magic items. The O&G book was the same.

You know what this means? All books from now on will probably only have 8 unique magic items (including Banners, Enchanted, Arcane, Magical Armor/Weapons).

The TK book has 2 magic weapons, 2 enchanted items, 2 arcane items, 2 magic standards.
Does anyone have the O&G book? What's the format like?

OnG have a different loadout, half of which are specific to a type of greenskin.

2 magic weapons, 1 Magic armour, 1 arcane item, 3 Magic Standards, 1 enchanted item.

I don't totally get what all the whining is about... This is exactly like 5th ed when we had the magic suppliment. Back then you had an utterly silly amount of magical items, and each race has maybe 5-6 specific ones.

The thing is now though, the common magic items aren't insanely broken!

As long as each keeps a few of their 'age old' items, such as say the executioner's axe for the dark elves, or tress of isoulde for the brets, what's the big deal?!

The part I don't like is that all troops are being closer brought together so all armies have a equivalent, all armies are being set the same sort of pre fab builds for combat and magic casters and they are all being restricted in options for gear with a large amount of common magical items to now take.
The way I see it is all armies are starting to lose their individuality and have to use the same options as everyone else and if it continues along that road why use different armies at all?
Lets just all take empire and be done with it.

Because you can still use thees 8 items in conjunction with the common magic section. It isn't like characters or every race are cartboard copies of each other either, far from it. Let's compare an Empire general to a Doombull, chaos lord, high elf prince and a dwarf lord. Each of these benefit in varying degrees from certain items.

Yet, I agree. I don't really like this development either but I sort of understand why they did it.

the fewer magic items there are,the less customisable our characters become.:suck:
i agree if this happens to the VC army then the vampires are going to be really similar. taking away our individuality of out vamps is just silly (not saying its gunna happen though xD )

hmm flayed hauberk (cheap and useful for a basic vamp (if you already have 1), crown of the damned (good ward-save), sword of kings (for WK) the carstein ring(expencive but brilliant), banner of barrows, black periapt, walach's bloody hauberk, blooddrinker

I don't think we'd get to keep the flayed hauberk or crown of the damned as there are similar items in the rulebook

I think we'd keep

Sword of kings
Blood drinker
Night shroud
Helm of commandment (hopefully)
Carstein ring
Banner of the Barrows
Hoff or bloodkeep banner (maybe with a slight rules change)
Staff of Damnation/Book of Arkhan (again maybe a slight rules change)

the frostblade, while probably rarely taken, has had several incarnations in old vamp books. I have a feeling they'd keep it. also, KISS the staff of damnation, book of arkhan, and tomb blade goodbye, they are Arkhan the Black's and he's in the tomb king book. But seriously I don't think we have a need to worry too much, I do not think the VC book is gonna be remade any time soon, I would gladly take only eight magic items if it meant not having to deal with our present zombies or 8 pt. skeletons. And bat swarms. Here is a realistic 8 item list.

1. Black Axe of Krell
2. Blood Drinker
3. Frost Blade
4 Night Shroud
5. Banner of Barrows
6. Skull Staff
7 Cursed Book
8. Helm of Commandment

See I didn't even fit in the Carstein ring...Maybe if there is a new book, the Lichmaster and Krell would resurface and take the skull staff and the black axe off our hands.
I wish they would brink back VC familiars. Further- how is this eight item list going to impact vamp powers? I am guessing a return to blood lines in some form. This could mean new bloodline models maybe but I hope they never get rid of the current/old bloodline models. they are truly awesome. Von Carsteins will probably get summon wolves and beguile. great.

Classic Items like the Flail of Skulls is still in the book even if restricted to a special character. So in a sense a lot of the old stuff is probably still gonna be there even if it is not optional for regular characters any more.

I doubt we'd keep the skull staff with it's current rules set as there's a basically identical item in the rulebook. The Black axe may be handed back to krell as a special character as well (Armybooks after ours have far more special characters)

Can someone move this to VC general discussion?

Sure

Taking all the special character items into consideration, I'd like to see a list something like;
Sword of Kings
Blood Drinker
Cursed Book (back to it's old 'all enemies within 6" are -1 to-hit')
Barrows Banner
Doomrider Banner (make fear tests more difficult)
Staff of Damnation
Book of Arkhan
Helm of Commandment

I feel we should still be allowed to keep those little trinkets of old Arkhan's... He's got one of Nagash's books afterall, we simply held onto what he lent us!

Cheers!

From a gameplay point of view, I'd be terribly upset if we lost the Royal Standard of Strigos. Hatred pwns in 8th.

I personally am not happy with this, as said it takes away from the individuality of the armies. Their magic item section was something that was unique, I would have much preferred a smaller general list for more army specific ones.

I think it comes down to how long everyone's been involved in the game... I've heard more positive stuff or else plain indifference from those who recall the days of the warhammer magic supliment.
The guys I talk to how are typically outraged by the lack of book items are those who tended to start come 6th ed... (just my own observations from the local stores.)

As long as no book gets the orc & gobbo crapheap treatment, then it should be decent enough. Plus, alot of other 'lost' items are turning up on special characters too. I for one for example, would be more than happy to see the carstien ring go specifically to Vlad instead of being part of our 'main' magic item list... (just please don't give him the blood drinker too though! We still need that one:O)

Cheers!

Utter total and complete hocum to those who say it takes away the individuality of the armies. Look across the 6th and 7th edition books and there are so many items that are carbon copies of each other that its ridiculous and there is nothing whatsoever from letting you customise the names of the items to fit in with your own army.

Moving on...

My 8 Items would be:

Frost Blade
Blood Drinker
Gem of Blood
Crown of Command
Banner of the Barrows
Drakenhof Banner
Flayed Hauberk
Book of Arkhan

I honestly forgot what items we had for a few moments there but I think this is enough when coupled with the Vampire Powers - soemthing I do not see going away because it would be like taking the Chaos Marks from Warriors - ludicrous.

Army homogenisation is occuring but the three big stumbling blocks are due in the no too near future - Ogre Kingdoms, Bretonnia and Wood Elves - homogenisation will come undone!

8 items would suck, yet most of our gems can be kept.

-Flayed hauberk
-Black periapt
-Drakenhoff banner
-Banner of blood keep
-Blood drinker
-Book of arkhan
-Crown of command
-either staff of damnation or hand of dust

The first mentioned are no brainers, specially banner of blood keep if you ask me. The minus 3 to all ranged attacks should be a no brainer with how strong shooting is now, specially on knight units, rather see it be made cheaper so more units can use it. staff and hand are great dmg dealers but they serve the same function, so either one of them would be fine. Black periapt is a must take for me in this magic heavy environment.

I think it's 99.9% likely we won't keep the flayed hauberk. There's now a common item that does the exact same thing - albeit for alot more pts!

It's hard to choose though what to keep and what to give to the special characters... Some are no-brainers like the carstien ring should become well & truely one of just Vlad's items.
Others however not so much. For example, if there's a good chance we might lose it, would we be willing to accept the bloody hauberk being limited to just Walach Harkon, or the Helm of Commandment being limited to just Neferata?!?

Personally, I think it would be cool to see a couple of our ancient 5th ed items make it back into the book!

Cheers!

I don't hold out much hope for the Helm of Commandment. Considering that there's now a 'Crown of Command' in the main rulebook, I don't think they'll allow the Helm to stick around. The names are just too similar.
