I read the bolded part and felt slightly confused, mainly because I don't recall seeing whtdwrf11 post any pictures of stuff he painted!

Yeah, I was overtired and confused as to who the original poster was. Sorry for causing confusion. I should stay away from keyboards when I'm sleepy.
So I guess what I should have said was:
logan054, your models are awesome.
whtdwrf11, I don't think you should get discouraged by other people's awesome models.

I'll work harder at, er, telling the two of you apart in the future.

I just wanted to contribute to this conversation by saying that most of my painting techniques were acquired by studying peoples plogs and emulating.
What I've found is that it's relatively easy to produce some really nice effects just using simple methods.
So chin up WHTDWRF11,just ask questions...IMHO it's more about knowing how to do something than it is BEING ABLE to do it.
For instance,Logan is a better painter than I am at this point b/c he can produce effects that I don't yet know how to...So I watch his plog ;)
@Logan- I love the bluish silver on the grandmaster..is that mixed in the paint or a bluish wash/glaze over matte silver?

@ whtdwrf11 - hey thanks mate, glad you like him so far! mind you at the moment he might end up being a normal terminator now, I am debating weather to drop the purfiers and just have a unit of 10 terminators which I then combat squad, solves my transport issue.

I think I would want to get my bret elite units before they go to resin, when they go resin they will just go up in price, I believe they will have a new book before long so I expect grail and questing will get new plastic kits like dragon prince or perhaps a all in one plastic kit to make all the different types of knights!

Bone is easy enough to paint, you could always paint deathwing the same way as you paint skeletons.

Iron warriors are easy enough to paint, give it ago mate, I believe their is a new legion odex coming out for 6th ed anyways so get them before you get excused of jumping on the bandwagon.

@ Von Calyptra - Hah cheers mate, I guess what you meant, I was just teasing you!

@ Count Lasombra - the armour isn't finished but yeah it was wash with blue wash, all raised area's paint boltgun metal, after that some highlights will be done mixing mithril silver with boltgun and finally a very heavily watered down wash will be applied again.

Little bit of a update on the Grandmaster

ai289.photobucket.com_albums_ll219_Logoan054_Grey_20Knights_Grandmaster3.webp

ai289.photobucket.com_albums_ll219_Logoan054_Grey_20Knights_Grandmaster4.webp

Well even if he gets turned into a normal terminator he's still looking good and that's and interesting problem to have drop a squad and field 10 terminators and combat squad so you have enough transports or keep him as grandmaster and still have a transport issue to fix.

Yeah don't get me started on that jump in price when the metal models go resin I mean 90 dollars for a unit of blood knights was bad enough but now there 99 dollars in resin so might see what kind of deal I can get on ebay or something for two small six man units of questing and grail knights to start with possibly or if I can find a good enough deal a unit of nine each.

As for the Iron Warriors I'll most likely see what I can find and try my hand at painting them at some point when I get a chance so most likely going to hit ebay and a couple other places to find some deals.

I can tell you one thing if anyone accused me of jumping on any bandwagons I would find and put all of my fantasy and 40k chaos army books and codexs in a bag and smack them with it which would be painful because I have most of the ones for fantasy and only one currently for 40k since I'm not sure what happened to the other two need to rebuy them I suppose.

Well not literally smack them with all those books but still I been into chaos armies since the 5th edition of fantasy and the 3rd edition of 40k and haven't lost any interest at all in the years following when they caught my attention so I'm a rather devote follower to chaos.

I just hope GW does the Bretonnians and the Chaos Legions justice even if they don't I'll end up buying the books anyways.

I am a happy boy today, my forgeworld dreadnought arrived! still have to put some greenstuff in places, I am very much looking forward to painting this :)

ai289.photobucket.com_albums_ll219_Logoan054_Grey_20Knights_VenDread2.webp

@ whtdwrf11 - yeah cheers mate, well its not really dropping a squad, its just turning two small squads into one big unit, to be honest I have decided to leave as is, just have to tweak it to fit a heavy flamer on the dread now.

Yeah I can certainly see what you mean about the price, you might be as well to look at alternate models for whatever army you choose to collect just to save some cash.

Well best way to do it with the Iron warriors, be interesting to see what you manage to cook for them!

LOL! I'm sure they wont!

I'm sure GW will do a good job of them, just depends who writes the book.

*edit*

decided to have a bash at it

ai289.photobucket.com_albums_ll219_Logoan054_Grey_20Knights_VenDread3.webp

Well another update, not far from finished now, I am not 100% sure about the force weapon but I think thats the sort of color I want to do the whole armies forces weapons as well as doing a glow effect like on the dread.

ai289.photobucket.com_albums_ll219_Logoan054_Grey_20Knights_VenDread4.webp

ai289.photobucket.com_albums_ll219_Logoan054_Grey_20Knights_VenDread5.webp

ai289.photobucket.com_albums_ll219_Logoan054_Grey_20Knights_VenDread6.webp

Dread is looking good I laughed at the decided to have a bash at it line considering it's a dread and pretty bashy itself.

Yeah Iron Warriors should be pretty simple most likely prime them black slap on some boltgun metal or something then some bronze for shoulder pad trim then drop a badab black wash on top of them, as for hazard stripes I'll figure something out before throwing the wash on them I imagine and call it good.

I just need to get a hold of some CSM boxes a few rhinos and some terminators got a 1000 point list in my head just need to decide where I'm going after I have two squads of basic iron warriors done along with a lord in terminator armor and his terminator retinue possibly two predator tanks.

Well I did abit of tweaking on the Grandmaster and Paladin, still however can't seem to get the Dreads forceweapon right :(

ai289.photobucket.com_albums_ll219_Logoan054_Grey_20Knights_Grandmaster5.webp

Obviously this guy still has more to do however I think the force weapon is looking much better now.

ai289.photobucket.com_albums_ll219_Logoan054_Grey_20Knights_Paladin5.webp

@ whtdwrf11

hah! cheers mate, glad you like it, I should have really been painting ultramatines, guess I will have to do that tomorrow now!

Yeah sounds the best way, maybe a devlun mud wash over them, I'm sure the strips will be easy enough to do!

Well that sounds different, don't iron warriors have access to vindicators? could be worth a look! but sounds like a interesting army, hope you have plenty of Bionics!

Yeah they got access to vindicators too I'm still fiddling with the 1000 point list might drop a melta gun from each squad to free up enough points to fit in two vindicators if my math is right and if I decide to go that way either would work for me.

Yeah bionics those are going to be a royal pain in my backside I haven't thought of what to do about those just yet.

Ah those poor ultramarines having to wait their turn guess that's what happens now and then.

Maybe your tackling the dreads forceweapon in the wrong way.

I mean it is much bigger so maybe you have to look and go at it in a different manner because of the more open space to it which while looking good on the smaller force weapons makes it need some tweaking on the bigger one to make it look right.

Ahh ok cool, personally I would just keep the meltaguns, very handy with all the tanks these days, I'm sure one will be more tha enough!

Well you have plenty of options for that, Ironhands have loads of bionics, you also have the forgeworld ones.

Well they are done now (well bar some highlights on 5 guns!) so they are going to be in the post tomorrow when I head into town for some gaming with my GK. I have actually now bought all the models for my army (spend £100 today near enough). While I am pretty damn broke I have just taken on a bloody big Guard commission, looks like 15 tanks and a crap load of infantry, I will be bust for some time. I should also be taking on some sang guard soon as wel so hopefully some time this year I will get to paint some grey knights. I say that but I am writing some tutorials for a GK blog now

http://grey-knights-40k.blogspot.com/

Next one will be how to do funky force weapons like the GM

Well I no ideas, people in GW seem to think my GM and dread are epic and were surprised the dread wasn't finished! man I have come a long way since I started painting all those years ago. I might post up some older models soon (found some old metal termies lol).

The list is still most defiantly in the planning stages maybe I'll pick a unit most people think are terrible like a dred or two.

Yeah iron hands and forgeworld will be checked out and I think the B&C have a tutorial on making bionics so I'll have to check that as well.

Well of course they think their epic it's because they are epic.

Older models painted by you oh that should be interesting to compare to how you paint now from when you painted then.

Sounds like your going to be at that Imperial Guard commission for a while with 15 tanks and a bunch of infantry plus some sang guard coming in for work too.

Well its only a minor update most of which are just better pictures (I decided to try and use the smart function rather than keep fiddling with the settings on my camera).

I decided with this guy I wanted to make him stand out more (will be doing the same with all my Justicar's

While not GK here are some sternguard I was commissioned to do

ai289.photobucket.com_albums_ll219_Logoan054_40k_20Log_Sternguard.webp

@whtdwrf11 - Well thats fair enough, personally i don't think you should worry so much about other people do or don't use but rather just pick the units you like the best. Its like with my GK's, everyon is goin about bloddy riflemen dreads! you know what, I don't want to paint one!

Ironhands I think are your best option really, you get a lot of bionics in the box, I painted a squad up as ultramarines a while so go check them out for a idea of what you get in the box!

Hah Cheers mate!

The olders ones will come soon ;)

Yeah I am not looking forward to the guard commission, I hate painting tanks :( the BA one should be nice to do, I will actually be painting a sang guard box with power weapons in the same style as my force weapons and a chaplain venerable dread as a deathcompany one all on lava bases, should be pretty cool!

The GKs are coming along very nicely and those sternguard look really good as well.

Yeah that's a lot of tanks to paint of course having to paint models you don't like makes it worse maybe you should invest in an airbrush some time to make the tanks go faster.

Sang Guard with those style power weapons and the chaplain dread all on lava bases really does sound cool.

Yeah good point about picking the things I like I've got the list pretty much nailed down how I want except the heavy support I'm deciding between a 6 man havoc squad with two autocannons and two missle launchers or two predator tanks with autocannons.

Going with the tanks would net me a spare 30 points for lightning claws on my lord and a combi-melta a piece for my aspiring champions if I go with the havocs there just as fluffy for an iron warriors army and puts another six bodies on the field making it 32 marines compared to 26.

I'm kind of in the middle between the choices I like the idea of the havocs and more bodies but I also like the thought of my lord getting a pair of claws and having a potential three melta shots from each of my troops even if the champions only get the one melta shot. If I had to be pressed on making a choice I think it's more towards the tanks because of the 30 points it spares letting me get those extra items plus there plastic which will make it easier on me to see about magnetizing the turrets.

That is the only thing that's left to decide then I'm good to go on finding some good deals for the units and buying primer and paint also I think I will see if I can find some of those iron hands bits to add to the army.

Long post with me rambling more then I should have about my iron warriors thoughts hope you don't mind too much since bouncing the ideas off someone I've talked to frequently in their log helps me make my own mind up on what I'm actually doing and gives me the confidence I need to tackle this project.

Actually, never mind. I really don't want to know. xD

Cheers mate, glad you like them, need to see if I can get the first strike squad finished today, also started on the BSB commission today, working on a skaven, chaos warrior and wood elf one at, will see if I can get those done today as well (doubtful but hey!), yeah the tanks should be fun as well but I think I am really looking forward to the BA commission, should be fun and pretty quick!

*edit*

Well another update, started working on a set of BSB, a Skaven, a Chaos warrior, a Wood elf and Ogre, here is some progress on the Skaven BSB

Well thats sounds good mate and the lightning claws will look cool on the lord, not so sire about the havocks, they may be just as well to have all missile launchers so they can either be anti-tank (4 cracks) or anti light infantry (4 frags).

The skaven is looking rather nice should prove interesting to see it finished and to see what the other three BSB's look like.

I'm looking forward to that BA one as well can't wait to see what kind of magic you manage with them for sure.

The tanks man if I had to do that many I think I would go loopy or try and assembly line those things just to get them going somewhere.

Yeah I think I'm more tempted by the two predator tanks and the spare options that lets me have for my lord and squad leaders so that's most likely the way I'll go just need to figure out some nice lightning claws.

I also managed to write down a 750 point Undivided WoC army list that would just require a battalion and buying a mounted chaos sorcerer or the chaos lord on daemonic mount. Kind of leaning on the sorcerer because might be interesting to try out some magic plus I rather pay 115 or less compared to like 140 or less if I can wrangle a nice deal off ebay.

Now if I could only figure out at least a 750 point Bretonnian force at some point then I would have all the armies I been looking at all sorted out.

Well here are some more updates on my grey knights, first strike combat squad is nearly done!

ai289.photobucket.com_albums_ll219_Logoan054_Grey_20Knights_GreyKnights.webp

ai289.photobucket.com_albums_ll219_Logoan054_Grey_20Knights_GreyKnights2.webp

@ whtdwrf11 - Cheers mate! well you not the only one looking forward to the BA one! but yeah I am not looking forward to doing the tanks but hopefully I can get then started in a week, sadly not had the time I would like to paint as of late with starting a new job :(

Well that could be very interesting! for lightning claws dosen't the plastic lord have a nice set?

Oh ok, sounds very cool, , has to be a sorcerer with the current meta sadly, you could always give him a magical shield and a weapon (sword of anti-heroes) to give him some extra killing power.

Brets, knights, lots of knights :p

The strike squads are coming along very nicely and I really do like the poses you've got out of them I guess that's the bonus of them being plastic now easier to assemble them in interesting poses.

New jobs always seem to be rough on time when you first start then things start to mellow out a bit where you get to the point that you have at least some of your time back to yourself.

Yeah those tanks are going to be a trial of endurance I think but at least you can reward yourself with BA.

Yes your correct the terminator lord kit has a nice pair of lightning claws on the sprue so I won't have to worry about digging around for some good ones.

Yeah I'm not sure if I'll ever go past 750 points for fantasy armies because a good amount of them require good sized units which costs a lot of money with the drop in models per box and the raising of the prices for the boxes so we'll have to see if I ever expand them.

Yeah my Bretonnian list since I'm still forced to take a BSB is looking like general then a BSB 8 strong unit of errant 8 strong unit of realm knights then I haven't decided the rest quite yet maybe two units of 12 bowmen and the general is looking to be either a paladin or a damsel so I can play around with magic again but only level one can't fit a level 2 in.

Well Been a while Since I posted much, Here is a some of the things I am working on at the moment.

Death Company Dread/Chaplain Dread

Sanguinary Guard

ai289.photobucket.com_albums_ll219_Logoan054_SangGuard.webp

Also Have some Guard I am working on at the moment, hopefully get some more of those done over the weekend when I have some time off work.

Good to see an update again.

Dread looks awesome for sure. I like the glowing eyes and how you did the blood talons on him the wings look nice as well.

The sang guard looks like he has no pupils but that might be because of the angle of the shot and I'm not sure about the powerfist colors but it might look better from a different angle.

Also how's work been treating you I know a couple weeks ago you were trying to adjust that got any better for you.

Very nice work as always, the dreadnaughts talons are smashing. Looking forward to seeing the progress on the Bsbs.

@ whtdwrf11- Thanks mate, well neither are finished so yeah, things like pupils haven't been done yet! Works been pretty good, still tiring me out, actually had to have a nap after work today sadly :(

@ Nikostratus - Thanks mate, BSB's are on the back burner at the moment, tried to contact the client several times now and had nothing back so until he decides to use his email they will sit about collecting dust, I have other clients who are obviously far more eager for their models back ;)

lol well that sure explains why he's got such white eyes for some reason it didn't cross my mind that both were still wip when I posted that guess my brain was on holiday.

That rather sucks that work is that tiring for you that you even had to take a nap after work today sure hope that resolves itself soon so the work can be good and not so tiring.
