Alternate Dire Wolves

I really don't like the current model range for Dire Wolves. Dire Wolves to me are something that look like huge wolves but have glowing red vampiric eyes. Kinda of like Dracula in his four legged wolf form.

To this end I just ordered two boxes of GW's new plastic Fenris Wolves for their 40K game. These wolves have no techno bits to them and are in extremely dynamic positions. Two that are leaping could actually be modelled to be leaping over tombstones on the base.

See the potential? I'm just going to do mine up like white wolves with glowing red eyes. They should come out real nice.

Put pictures up as soon as you've got your prototype finished. I totally see the potential & agree; THOSE I could see putting in my army. The others... meh.

Hey guys, don't be jerks, sometimes I love my ugly.. terrible wolf models.. that I have a hard time deciding which part is dying skin, or bone, or .. what ever those things are :ghost:

The only part I dislike about the Dire-Wolves that are undead-i-fied is their bulbous heads. They looks quite out of proportion (At least the ones the 'Eavy Metal team did, which btw I think look horrendous), but besides that I don't mind their rather slogging looks.

God, I love Vampire Counts, because I feel like I could collect/model as many vampire counts armies as I wanted, and ever get bored or run out of ideas for cool 'Theme's to make for them visually (Or rules wise). Those wolves do look quite amazing, and would be great for a Vamp that was far closer to the way the Von Carsteins have been before (With the militias and packs of wild beast ), although I think the undead pups look great for any sort of slogging death & decay looking army (Strigoi or such).

Still.... they're so... meh!

Heads too big. And the Doom wolf sculpt is CRAP! I STILL have that bugger, and I stare at it on a weekly basis wondering why I don't melt it down & craft it into something more useful; like a big blob of melted pewter. :tongue:

I like my strigoi vampire, and I agree that the idea of the existing dire wolves works better, but I'd still try to make the Fenris Wolves work rather than them. :zombie:

DOUBLE the price? What is this?? I mean do we treat our 40k brethren like hair dressers treat women? Why would a haircut for a man cost $17 and a woman $40? 10 Wolves for WHFB $29.75... Fenris wolves are $29.75 for 5? C'mon GW...they're not even "Finecast" (which is how they generally "justify" charging twice as much for something).

Well, there goes that idea. I'll just be sticking to NO dire wolves, thank you very much...

They are only $24.75 where I live. They may be larger than normal GW wolf models which is fine by me. I think Direwolf, I am thinking of the creature from George R.R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire series. Long as they fit on a cav base which they clearly look like they will.

They are the same size as these wolves, actually quite large. They probably fit on a Cav base though, since they are the right shape; I'd just hope they aren't too wide to not rank up, which is also possible.

They'll also nearly dwarf your zombies, which might be a bit funny looking xP

Yes, I am quite excited about these. Aesthetics trump most other factors in my very slowly growing army; I had decided not to use any wolves because of the way the old models looked, but I'm sold on these Space Wolves ones. I think I'll paint them to look soiled and bloody to give them more VC flavor.

Oh dear GAWD those are SPACE MARINES on their backs!!! That's ludicrous! HOWEVER! If used properly, they would make for FANTASTIC dire wolves; their bases may have to be more diorama-like, but I think that they'd look fantastic, especially considering Dire Wolves are supposedly the carcasses of HUGE Sylvanian wolves...

I have been using the old chaos hounds... but I do love those new wolves. I wounder how hard it would be to some fantasy figs on the backs of those guys (thinking heroes for various armies).

I've bought a box of the new Fenris wolves and they are very nice.

As pointed out earlier, these are NOT the same as the wolves in the Thunderwolf cav box. The Fenris wolves come with 40mm round bases whereas the Thunderwolves are 60mm bases.

I'm going to use the Fenris wolves as Crypt Horrors. I have already based them on 40mm square bases and they rank as long as you are careful. I like the idea of giant werewolves as opposed to big versions of the crappy GW butt-sniffers.

I think the current GW Dire Wolves are way too big and poorly designed so I use older metal wolves that are smaller and therefore will not be confused with my 'crypt wolves'

Ah, they are a bit smaller than those Titian-wolf God-killing-machines; But at least I was right about them being on 40mm like I suspected. Have you had a chance to pick some up yet? I'm still unsure how well they'd fit on the Calv bases (25x50mm).

Hey I like those butt-sniffers! Also the new Crypt Horrors are drool worthy :konrad: even at the price they are, I still want more of them (Although limited poses could pose an issue itself).

Even still, the most compelling reason I like the Dire Wolves in the current range? Just because it reconciles the fact that you're using a spell to raise undead (IoN) on them to bring more back, rather than that they are being 'Called' on from a beast master, or master of the wild packs or what have you. Just seems silly to have them being 'Raised' when they are not dead already :ghost: (I have a very love-hate affair with them)
