Alternative model for Fell Bats?

The general theme i've seen for them is flying ghoul conversions. Ghoul bodies with tyranid gargoyle wings, or for a more harpy like look daemonettes as a basis. I went for a little different myself and used bloodletters with gargoyle wings, and carved the head down until it was more ghoul like.

Dark Eldar Razorwing Flocks. Put a number of them on a base and tell people they aren't bat swarms (no one really uses swarms around here anyway). They fit my Nehekharan theme well.

Id go for razorwing flocks too if they weren't so expensive. much less cliched than bats for a gothic theme.

Since my theme is Mousillon, I'm adhering as much to a Bretonnian look as possible. I'm using skeletal horse (either the plane TK ones, or the unbarded ones from Black Knights/Hex box) and adding the metal wings from the more recent (though oop) Carrion from TK. The wings look very decrepit and nasty, and the overall look is like undead Pegasus (ie Fell Pegasus). I'm proxying them right now till they are finished, and will likely add a video at some point to my youtube channel when I do (among the many other conversions done, in the works and planned lol). Its all about the theme. If you like gargoyles, or just want a cooler bat model than the ugly gw one, go for it. The FB are such a good unit to include based on price and function/role, you want a nicer model that fits your army, so /salute.

I use a few things in this case.

First is my Ghouls with Nid Gargoyle wings, second is dark eldar scourge wings on models like witch elves/ stigoi vampires to signify weaker vampires.
For swarms though I really like the ones I get from LOTR's Goblin Beast master, cheap and look good. Plus 100% GW game legal at tournaments. ;)

I've done two different ones.

The first was a cheap set of toy bats that I'd repainted and modified slightly.

The other was a difficult variation of the ghoul bats taking the mantic ghouls/zombie parts and using the reaper Dragon Man conversion kit wings and tails...

On the bat swarms I take it you put them all together yourself? At least it looks like you just get a bunch of them individually and have to glue them together?

Correct. They're a bit fiddly to assemble, and the finished swarm is fairly fragile unless you pin the hell out of it, but the quality of the minis makes up for it.

I also use the masquerade bats for my fell bats. Beautiful sculpts at just the right size. The only catch is if I want to use any more than 3, I'm going to start doubling up on poses or have to do some tricky converting.

From memory they do two types of swarms. You can buy individual bats, or you can buy the ones that are attached. I have the attached ones, and they fit together very well. I also incorporate the old Warmaster Fell Bats into my bat swarms.

Here was my inspiration.
