Angie's Dark Elves

  • The masquerade of murder returns! A new game of Vampires Amongst Us has begun. Unmask the killers, trust no one, and try to survive the night. Find out more and sign up now!
I've been playing and painting Dark Elves for a while now and I'm rather close to finishing the army now. The colours I went for are blue (which ended up becoming brighter as the army progressed), light leather and hints of iron and gold, while the beasts are brown and green to get some contrast.

Here is the army as it (more or less) is standing now:

The models in my army are the following:

1 dreadlady on dragon
2 dark pegasi (one lord; one counts-as Morathi/sorceress)
1 lord/master on foot
2 sorceresses on dark horse
1 sorceress on foot
1 lord on cold one
1 shadowblade
3 assassins

30 spearmen
20 plastic corsairs
20 metal corsairs
20 witch elves
18 darkshards
12 darkshards
6 dark riders
5 cold one knights
5 shades
2 reaper bolt throwers
1 cold one chariot
1 hydra
1 scourgerunner chariot
5 warlocks

What still needs to be painted:

1 standard bearer on foot
1 hellebron
1 bloodshade
1 beastmaster
20 metal executioners
1 converted manticore (I need some dragon wings to come in)

Some old pictures of my spearmen, dark riders, crossbowmen and dreadlady/mistress. The dark riders have been converted from wood elf glade guard. The dreadlady is a barely untouched Dark Eldar lahmaean: all I did was smoothen her back.

When I took these pictures I didn't have an idea yet about where to go with basing. The basing has since been fixed on the units. I ended up settling with the basing the spearmen have: A light earth with bright grass and ruined tiles. I use the same basing for my Bretonnians and some spare wood elves. The idea is that battles between those two armies take place in a glade near Athel Loren, allowing for spites decorating the bases easily.

Darkshards, Witch Elves and Cold One Knights! The second unit of darkshards was painted much later than the first, and it shows. They're far brighter and much neater. The Witch Elves have been converted from Dark Eldar Wyches, with main hand weapons coming from the corsair and spearmen sprues. All weapons are coated with green to indicate they are poisonous. I think the freehand on the banner turned out pretty great. The Cold One Knights have a few small conversions: the banner is partly a glade rider one and two of the mounts come from the new chariot kit.

My dragon! Taking pictures of this thing was rather tricky, since the wings are so large! It's a converted high elf dragon, with the non-armoured head and spikes. I kept the pose the same, and decided to paint it in the same colour as my cold ones and corsair cloaks: brown with green scales and some yellow spots to break it up. The rider is made out of the high elf mage, but with a dark eldar head and arms. With the braid, she represents the dreadlady I posted earlier. I put a small Bretonnian shrine to the Lady on the base, hidden next to the rock. The little owl was hiding between my bits and just waiting to be put on the rock. I'm really happy with how this one turned out!

Some of my character models are converted or counts-as. The first dark pegasus was converted from some spare Cold One Knight Pieces combined with a Bretonnian pegasus. The three assassins are 40k Death Cult assassins with some slight cyber-stuff cut away. The second dark pegasus is the fifth edition one with a sixth edition witch elf and counts-as Morathi or a sorceress. Of the two bolt throwers, the first was painted about two years before the second one. Unfortunately, the second one came without crew, as I bought it from a box of used mini's in a local gaming store. They did have some older dark elf/high elf stuff in there as well, so I improvised the crew a bit. The mount of the mounted sorceress also was bought there and under the layers of paint turned out to be a metal recast. I cleaned the model up as much as I could and sculpted some scales on it to make the mount look a bit more bestial.

Fantastic stuff! Very nicely painted and a wonderful colour scheme. Especially love the use of the Dark Eldar Lahmean as a Dark Elf.

Thanks all! Most of the above was done in the last two years, with some big pauses in between.

I rather like adding some detail to bases here and there, even if it's just a bit of tiling to break everything up. I have added reins to the high elf chariot this week actually! I bought some chain for my skeletons and decided to add it to the chariot too. The old pegasus is one of my favourite models too. I couldn't let the chance slip to get my hands on it when I saw it online :D.

I have some new pictures, shamelessly copied from my warseer plog. Shadowblade the assassin, a mounted sorceress and a unit of metal corsairs. Currently, a unit of 5 doomfire warlocks is WIP. I hope to get them finished this sunday for a little tournament, and have some pictures of them up next week!.

Shadowblade was converted from a Dark Eldar Wych I picked up very cheap. I wanted to do something with the model for WHF, and cut off the metal blaster to replace it with a wood elf sword.
The sorceress' mount was bought at the same sale as the wych. It had a thick coat of paint, and when stripped it turned out to be a slightly shoddy metal recast of the old elven steed. I fixed it up a bit and added scales to make it fit a bit with the pegasus. The highlights are a bit less stark IRL.

Thanks everyone! There are some highlights on the metal cloaks up to scorpion green, but I think they've been washed out a bit by an abundance of light on the picture. The banner on the CO Chariot is a little cheaty: I used the new transfer sheets that came with the Scourgerunner Chariot. I ended up being gradually pulled towards brigher and stark colours while painting and highlighting and decided it looked rather neat so I kept it in.

I finished the Doomfire Warlocks barely in time for the tournament, and then I caught a flu or something so I couldn't go after all D:
That said, here they are!
