So I have been getting my butt kicked with VC. No big deal as I am still learning how to play them. However I would like the option of a 2nd Army since my VC Army is within sight of being completed (model wise).

I was thinking High Elves or Empire

High Elves:
Bolt Thrower is nice
Great Ranged units
Have some great units
Mantic models to Offset price
Eagles and dragons
ASF is nice

Bad things about em are they are only T3 and not much above S3. I do like CC.

Empire:
Seems very diverse as far as units go.
I love the variety in war machines
Seem to have decent magic
Some units seem good in CC
I like the detachments special rule

Bad side is cost. Looks like I would need to invest in a lot of units and no Mantic models to help me out.

What do you guys think? Any other Armies I should look into? Pretty much that have diversity in the units, decent magic and war machines.

Empire has been and still is a solid army.
The ability to bring large and effective blocks of infantry is what your looking for in 8th.
And Empire can take large, effective, and look! Cheap ones at that!

Lots of people do High Elves, lots. And it only seems like they are drawing even more attention, especially with the new edition.
Yes, T3 is their downfall. Even the mighty Swordmasters are T3 with only heavy armor.
And let me tell you, they fall quite nicely to some shooting xD

Magic....diversity...Daemons of Chaos ever nudge your interest?
May not have the war machines your looking for, but 2/3 isn't bad :)

I can't be sure on this, i just heard it off a friend in passing, but he mentioned something about mantic doing humans after dwarfs.

I personaly amd doing a drakenhoff themed empire army. With hopes to feel field my favorite things. Drakenhoff banner(even if its just a painted banner with no powers) Konrad (one of my captians) But giving it the flexablity and diversablity of taking on alot of things. You got cannons and long range which some players prefer over hard pounders. Yet when shove comes to using a big mace the empire can pound back with great swords and even knights. My suggestion would be empire plus you can always use them as zombies latter if you decide you dont like them.

Next is Orcs. Mantic does Good, then bad, then good, then bad. As of right now they are not sure what is after Orcs, humans are a possability but not even they have decided yet. And even before Orcs they are going to revisit undead and give us zombies and maybe a another unit.

I'll read the DoC book next.

As far as themed Army, I'm not sure I can pull it off. Can you give me some idea's of what you plan to do?

Have you thought about Warriors of Chaos? While at first they may not sound like the things you are wishing for, they can be. Think of it like this.

1# Awesome Models. The new daemon prince kit, the great looking (and fully plastic) chaos knights/warriors, etc.
2# Has its own form of diversity. You can field an army of armoured killing machines (Warriors, chosen, knights, champions), a mobile force of unarmoured beserkers (marauders, warhounds, marauder horsemen), or a warped menangerie of daemons, monsters and psychopaths (chaos trolls, daemon units, hellcannon, furies, spawn) or any mixture of the above.
3# Decent stats. As I understand, for your main infantry blocks you have the choice between wonderfully solid chaos warriors with heavy armour and decent toughness, or cheaper marauders who arent that bad either. Throw in daemons, champions, chaos knights and you have some real tough characters.
4# The option of some interesting magic. I think you can choose from 3 schools of chaos magic, the winds of change, the pestilent diseases of nurgle or the seductive sensuality of slaneesh.
5# While not traditionally shooty, WoC armies do have access to daemonic hellcannons and some blasty magic.
6# Cost. A WoC army can be nice and compact if you use the more expensive units instead of marauders. Also the army can be built purely out of plastic if you wish, making it that much cheaper.
7# I am very tempted to collect them myself.

Although it goes against everything I stand for, I would recommend High Elves. As they are going to be one of the armies included in the new starter set, there will be a whole load of cheap plastic models available for you to build up a good core. Also, High Elves are getting more releases in October, so you will get nice shiney new toys to play with.

And if you doubt High Elves ability in CC, then you have never been the wrong side of a unit of Swordmasters !!

Well pretty much im taking the lords of the sylvannia court such as Count otto van drak Konrad possible manfred, and others as my heros Count otto is my general Konrad is a captain (plastic conversion) unsure on manfred. the rest is basis troops With most of my troops all im doing is the ancient sylvannia court colors and icongrapy. The only exception is going to be my great swords(graveguard) which are going to carry my drakenhof banner prior its curruption. My mounted drakenhof knights are gonna have the drakenhof key banner and the icongrapy on there horses. The rest of the army save the flagelents are the regualer troops of the empire with using older handgunners to represent the older guns the sylvannia host would of had. My flagelents are going to be some of the old sigermite sisters and witch hunters from mordheim with real flagelents mixed in. This to give it a angry fanatical mob feel. My knights order of the wolf are a take off of the white wolves of the empire with the exception being is they are not weilding hammers but lances. It being just the orders name really I didnt want it to have special rules. But thats is my plan. Im even writting the Wolves own fluff.

The sylvannian host
Count Otto General Mtd
Count otto on foot
Captian Konrad
2 War preists of morr
30 halberdiers with cmd
40 spearmen with cmd
40 swordsmen with cmds
10 drakenoff guard mounted
10 knights Order of the Wolf
20 crossbowmen
20 archers
20 Handgunners
40 free company
30 great swords Drakenoff guard
2 great cannons
2 mortors
2 hell blaster volley guns
30 flagellant warband

What? Swordmasters have great weapons, White Lions have great weapons, Phoenix Guard have Halberds. The three 'main' units in your army all have above S3. Also, the White Lion Chariot is hard as nails.

High Elves are a Close Combat army man.
