I've looked through some of the other threads about this and they got me nowhere. My friend uses dark elves that counter most normal counters. He's probably playing with a tailored list and it definitely doesn't help that I'm a beginner and we've only done small point battles (500). If I take an ethereal, he has magic weapons in each squad. If i try the whole grind them down with zombies, his corsairs screw me over with attacks. And i can't get my magic off with all his dark elves magic.
I'm pretty sure its because of the low points I can't field anything overpowering but I'd at least like to have some ideas for unit builds and tactics in higher point games and such.
SO
How do I kick his ass?

Dire Wolves 5

Dire Wolves 5

Zombie Horde 20

Spirit Host 3

Crypt Horrors 3

Necromancer
The Cursed Book

I would try something like this. but your biggest problem is the points. VC draw strength from their monsters and characters and you really don't get any in a 500pt list. The trick is to tie stuff up with your zombies and enter into combat and eliminate your opponents softer units.

Its also worth mentioning that summoning is much stronger in lower point games especially if its new units your making.

I would go something like this.

Total Roster Cost: 498

Necromancer (1#, 120 pts)
1 Necromancer = (Master of the Dead, Curse book)

Skeleton Warriors (10#, 70 pts)
9 Skeleton Warriors (Std)
1 Skeleton Champion

Skeleton Warriors (10#, 70 pts)
9 Skeleton Warriors (Std)
1 Skeleton Champion

Crypt Horrors (6#, 238 pts)
5 Crypt Horrors
1 Crypt Haunter

Let him come to you, in while you raise you skeletons, as much as you can, delf only have strenght 3 on most of them, so you skeletons would have their 5+ as and 6+ ward.

It would help, if you can tell us how his list is? :)

As others have stated, playing in such low point cost games is difficult for VCs.

Once you get to 1500, 2000, + pts you will find that you have a lot more options to deal with things.

You could go for points-denial? Minimal core then as many Grave Guard as you can fit? :clown:

500 pts is really far too smal for fantasy. At 40k it's possible, but fantasy it simply isn't. 1000pts at least, then you can start to do stuff!

I believe your best option would be raise to pt lvl. but at 500 something like what litvak posted would be good. I am a dark elf player and have only recently started to play VC, but if he is tailoring his list to your army you are going to have a hard time. sorry i dont have enough experience playing VC to provide a list to bring but i can give you some insight into dark elfs

If i was your opponent i would bring:

19 xbows music
lvl 1 sorc(fire) with +1spell item
5 shades AHW
5 shades AHW

comes out to 499

this would counter the list litvak posted although the horrors would still pose a threat since you can resurect them.

again this is just what i would take as a DE player not sure what lists your opponent brings.

First of all, if he's a friend of yours, ask him not to tailor his list as you are just starting out. It really is no fun when you face an opponent who "needs" to always win.

Like everyone else has said, 500 point games are tough for VC

Try this list that griswald came up with. It's pretty solid in my opinion;

vamp, heavy armor, barded nightmare

5 wolves

5 wolves

5 wolves, champion

8 black knights barding, lances, full command

493

Don't forget to put up the best bits from this thread into the army specific thread. That way others can easily find the advice once this thread has gone down the list:thumbsup:
