the only reason I'm seeing is if he's riding a terrorgheist. That is the only reason I can think of taking him over a normal vampire lord.

With the vampire lord I can achieve the same regen save with the seed of rebirth and a mortis engine. In the 3000 point list I use I run two mortis engines flanking a horde of ghouls with my vamp lord with seed of rebirth, dragon helm, other trickster's shard, and giant blade. He can dish out the same damage as the king but he's way more protected.

I just want some ideas of how the strigoi ghoul king is more useful than just to have an extra terrorgheist.

1. Fluff

2. In your example you are relying on the Mortis Engine(s). While they are cool, they can be taken out with Flaming Cannon Fire in 1 round. Not to mention, you have to be in the radius of the Engine. Could be problamatic depending on what your facing and the set up...Example would be the Dawn Attack Mission - Your mortis engines could end up on the right flank and your Vampire is on the left.

3. Infinite Hatred + Red Fury = win for the Strigoi in combat.

I haven't found a reason to use a SGK yet over a VL but he can be build a certain way to be the most potent combat lord you can take, given the poison attacks and inf. hatred and higher I. My style of play is a more potent magic VL so I have no use for those extra combat tricks.

I do see the dawn attack being a problem but when isn't it a problem for vampire counts? I don't worry about dwarfs because literally no one plays them where I'm from. I guess I'm just lucky. I usually only play friendly non tournament games so I really don't have to worry about being super ultra competitive. And infinite hatred can easily be reproduced with ASF for almost all armies.

I guess fluff really is one of the only reasons to use him over a vampire lord. If he was cheaper I might use him. Or if he could be a lvl 4. Heck I'd settle with lvl 3 even.

5+ regen means you do not have to buy him a wardsave (besides dragonbane Gem). Give him Sword of Bloodshed and Potion of Strength and Red Fury and watch him eat anything in CC. Vampires are kind of jack of all trades in my mind (blend between master Nekro and GK) but the GK is just pure brutality in the phase he is made for

Only reasons I can see:

1) you want to mount a character on a terrorgheist

2) you want to take an infantry lord with a magic weapon too expensive to buy real defenses - as the SGK's 5+ regen (4+ near a mortis engine) will generally be better then the 4+ armor save a vampire lord is stuck with if you aren't spending a big chunk of your item points on defense or at least mounting him on a nightmare for the extra two points of armor.

I think that if you want a solo fighter wizard lord then of course the Vampire is the way to go. but for those that want their fighter & caster seperate than the SGK is a better buy to go with the Master Necro.

I haven't had a chance to take him yet but I plan on using him in my next 2000pt battle along side a master necro. I think if your planning on running a lvl 1 vamp lord, why not give him a chance? As already stated equipped with dragon bane, red fury and possibly a potion of strength he really could make a mess of rnf turning the combat in your favor right on the get go, all for a relatively cheap cost. I think in games under 2250 where you want a combat machine he really is a mOnster bought on a budget. Even this build let's you fit in a master necro aswell as heroes at 2000pt. I honestly can't see a reason to take a vl at these levels. However I do run fluffy strigoi lists so I'm pretty one sided lol

The thing about the poisoned attacks is you lose them as soon as you take a magic weapon...

I shake my head when I read lists that has this guy with a magic weapon.
As soon as you put a magic weapon on him your better off taking a Vampire Lord.

Reasons for taking the Strigoi Ghoul King:

-comes with 5+ regen
-comes with poisin and infinate hatred
He has built in save and close combat upgrades which opens up your magic items and vamp powers alotment for other items.
Heck, even just throwing in filler items to help out the rest of your army is worth it. Expensive arcane item

No armour sucks but if your fighting an opponent with a super sword of ignore armour saves + the other trickers shard your laughing!

Thanks Peacemaker. Your argument finally showed me. The strigoi ghoul king is a combat character that you don't need to buy a magic weapon for and so can spend those points on something else.

I finally understand his uses. Thanks everyone for filling me in. I just couldn't see it.
