Yeah, if the argument is "It's not as good as a War Hydra so it's poo" then we might as well just throw out our army book! The Varghulf is pretty reasonably priced for what you get.

The Elf player I compete against uses maidens regularly.

They are perfect for scoring that one flaming wound on CH, Engines, and TG so that the bolt throwers can make that target go away.

Systematically tearing your army down bit by bit until only the crumbly gooey center is left. Its really annoying and i have found that running for combat is my only salvation. Because of this i have found a new respect for the faster units and Vanhelms.

Why poo? They're just slightly weaker war hydras (more movement, ignore flanks/rear, no scaly skin or breath) and war hydras are awesome. I thought they might have their uses (especially in smaller games).

Slightly weaker? No 4+, no breath, no handlers leaves you with a very mediocre monster that hardly resembles a hydra at all.

On topic: I never liked the Avelorn ladies to begin with but without the ability to purchase a musician they are even less appealing to me. I see no reason to play them.

Aww come on now, Rank and File wraiths have their uses! a lot of the tourneys give prizes to the biggest loser! so atleast you may be able to get a pitty prize out of them? or if you want to lose a game real quick so that you can get to the bar faster!
