Hi guys, was wondering if anyone here has any experience playing AoS with azyr comp. I have an upcoming tournament and could use some tips and tricks =] The tournament will be 3 battles 20 points domination scenario, where you have to hold an area for points, 1st with 7 points wins. That being said this post can be used for generic azyr comp tactics not just for my upcoming tournament. Any lists, deployment strategies or tips are welcome =]

I've used Azyr a lot. It seems OK. I did find that it penalizes large groups of infantry pretty harshly, moreso than clash comp. But, I find it weights the big heros better than clash comp does.

Also it penalizes Undead for having their regeneration banners which you can take or leave. They are pretty powerful I guess, but it feels like they are kind of picking on undead.

Yeah, I'm remembering why I didn't like it much. I like big blocks of infantry. I like how they make armies look like armies. I like the horde bonuses built into them on AoS that manage to almost put them on a level with elites. And I like our banners, and the thematic feel they give of the restless undying. Clash does handle units and summoning much better, but as you say the way they weigh the big stuff is absolutely absurd. bah, getting off topic....

I agree, what you are saying is indeed correct. It's shit that i have to pay for banners while the others don't but that's another topic. it's starting around 1 month from now. on the 16th Jan till end of march. with each player playing 1 game in 2 weeks for a total of 3 games.

I was thinking of using:

Vlad or Vampire lord 3pts
Necromancer 2pts

skull catapult 2pts

3 stalkers 3pts
6 spirit hosts 4pts
5 horse archers 4pts
5 dire wolves 2pts

will summon 2 morghasts and 5 hexwraiths

also have available 10 gg, 30 skele, 5 more wolves, banshee and cairn wraith, 25 ghouls, strigoi ghoul king, casket of souls, 3 crypt horrors or varghiest (available at xmas :p)

but i would like to avoid big and slow units and i know some players who rely on heavy shooting, last 2 games i got my gg and skele wiped out with an opponent having a bolt thrower and around 40 xbow men :/

EDIT: any new unit suggestions are welcome although i'm a bit time restricted.

Hi!

regarding the Horse Archers and the Dire Wolves, maybe you'd like to use something with a bit more combo potential, like your Ghouls with your Strigoi Ghoul King and your Crypt Horrors, for a Flesh Eater army, since synergy works best in AoS.

Also, you may want to get a generic Vampire Lord if you plan to use a lot of different non-combo units (just as you are suggesting), so you can use "cheesy" units that function more or less independently, like Vargheists (no current specific bonus applies to them, unlike Varghulf which is also a Flesh Eater, so Vampire Lord's Blood Feast clicks with them).

The Casket of Souls does combo better with Liche Priests, but it functions very well on it's own, so I agree on that one. Maybe I'd throw (if you could spare) a Necrotect to get double shots from the Catapult, although if you are planning on fielding it, you may want to consider providing it with some sort of guard to keep it shooting and unengaged for as long as you can, since it can fire upon almost anything anywhere on the field (in this case, enemy units around your target terrain).

You have fast very very mobile units with Sepulchral Stalkers, Vargheists and Morghast Harbingers (if you have Archai, I'd recomend putting them on guard duty along the Necromancer instead, since his Undead Minions's special rule ignores a wound but causes a Mortal Wound instead, and Archai's Ebon-wrought Armor has a chance to ignore said wound, making them an obvious combo). You should get some staying power to control the objective OR ignore the game's objective and hunt stuff down and kill them as efficiently as possible, with the use of Sepulchral Stalker's ranged attack, Catapult's and finishing off with a charge from Vargheists/Harbingers buffed with the Vampire Lord's command ability. You could win just by removing big threats and then burrowing -> unburrowing your Stalkers inside the terrain you need to control to leech some points before engaging other units.

It's a gamble, wether to build a strong army that must move close to itself, but you'd have to leave the Catapult out (or be willing to lose it early on without support) so you can control the objective for as long as you can, therefore requiring as much Reanimation as you can get, plus banners plus aoe buffs like a Wight King's Infernal Sandard and more infantry; OR build a mobile army that can strike hard and fast at few but crucial units, but will not be able to hold the terrain and could have some problems against clustered units that can sacrifice the frontline to keep your mobile units engaged and grind them down via attrition.

Either way you are faced with a problem, so... how do you like to play the most? =D

@Demian Very thanks for a nice and detailed post. And i must say while not all the stuff you mentioned are my style, you do point out great synergy.

Yesterday i had a change to test out a list similar to this which contained:

Total Points: 20pt
1 Necromancer = 2pts
1 Vlad = 3pts
1 Skull Catapult = 2pts
3 Stalkers = 3pts
10 Wolves = 4pts
4 Spirits = 3pts
10 Skeletons (banner + crypt + spears) = 3pts
Morghast Archai (summon)
Grave Guards (summon)
Hex Wraiths (summon)

and it was against a dark elf ranged heavy army. he had 30xbow men and a bolt thrower. Managed to summon hexwraiths and morghasts turn 1, used the spirits to pressure objectives while protecting the catapult and stalkers to pick out his bolt thrower and a unit of 10 xbow men. the morghasts took care of the other 20 xbow men and the wolves and hex wraiths used to capture objectives while assisted by skeletons. Won a perfect match with 7 points and lost only 6 wolves and 1 stalker =]

it worked really well actually but i think i'll replace the skeletons with horse archers for more mobility and kiting.

PS Vlad is a beast.

The snake things? Are they significantly better than the Necropolis Knights? I have an unopened box and am not sure how best to build them.

Yea those, I haven't any necropolis knight so i can't say how they do in an actual game. the stalkers however have a ranged gaze attack 10" range, which you roll a die for each model in your unit. on a 1 you suffer a mortal wound, 2,3 nothing happens, 4,5 target unit suffers a mortal wound and on 6 target unit suffers d3 mortal wounds. They also have an ability buried beneath the sand in which you can select to not deploy them and in any of movement phases you set them up 9" away from enemy units. They can burrow and unburrow how many times you like but each time you do they lose their movement phase. Its worth mentioning that you can unborrow, shoot and try to charge in the same turn so they are exceptional at picking out enemy casters of warmachines. Not to mention they have a movement of 8 and since this post is for azyr comp they are at 1 point for 1 model. But everything depends on what you need for your army. these are more for shooting/damage dealing ambushes, the knights i guess are more as a heavy hitting cavalry sort of thing.

Nice to hear of your victory!

Now that I think of it, Horse Archers could actually perform better than just 10 skeletons, since small numbers provide no bonuses to them, and Horse Archers can stand 2 wounds worth of pain to slay a model, and their icon brings D3 models back.

The snake things? Are they significantly better than the Necropolis Knights? I have an unopened box and am not sure how best to build them.

As Eyeless said, Sepulchral Stalkers have a different role than Necropolis Knights.

Necro Knights are more of a heavy cavalry unit, and can withstand quite a lot of pain and deal a considerable amount in return. If you can buff their To-Wound rolls you can get their necrovenom on a 5+ which is insane (mortal wound + any other damage they deal) and the snakes themselves hit harder than the rider. Their icon restores a single slain model but that's worth 5 wounds with a decent save (4+ in the combat phase) and 5 attacks per model, with 2'' range.

If you like to play defensively, Necropolis Knights can either advance or hold a position.

For those of you using Azyr comp, please at least voice you dislike for the system and encourage your clubs to try something else. It is one of those systems trying to bed AoS back to 8th with arbitrary point values which force you to take the units they accidentally undervalued only, leaving all your other beautiful models stuck at home on the shelf. In the end its no more balanced than wound count.

I'm thankful for any system that gets models on the table but systems like Azyr comp strangle the hobby. With every new club promoting Azyr comp, AoS dies a little more.

@EternallyUndying I myself have already said what i like and dislike about this system, and while you're right about some things, this post is not intended neither to promote Azyr comp (or any other comp) and neither to discuss the comp's pros and cons. This is to discuss lists and different tactics within the comp for fellow players. Lets not go out of context pls.

8th was deeply flawed and had to be killed for the hobby to survive. Azyr is bending AoS back to 8th ed. Other systems embrace the new and move the hobby forward.

Hey if you like it, enjoy it. I would give it a go if someone really wanted to. All I ask is that, if you are being forced into it by a club that wont give you another choice, actively voice your opposition and try to promote other systems.
