BSB saves him if he charges into a big unit and things go wrong. I have done a great deal of play-testing with this build a while back. Let me see if I can find the thread

Yes. I could see that being useful to it. Though it is an awesome piece. I like taking it. Ususally oppenents are too busy trying to kill my Terror to deal with the throne before it locks into combat.
No as it means no other magic items for you. And avoid units with killing blow. Other than that you should be fine.
since the rules for battle of wills doesn't say unmodified leadership does that mean you can use inspiring presence for the roll?

@Xivigg: Don't be afraid of experimenting with putting your vamp lord on the throne in a non competitiive setting, it can be pretty reilient (T5, armour save, Ward save, and battle of wills). It can be very tough and deal a lot of damage with a maxed out close combat vamp lord on it :konrad:

That's true, I just find my lord does more for me in my black knights or as a SGK in a Ghoul horde.
Well, i don't like to paint a big "cannon target" on my general 
And i'm sure most (if not all) cannon fire will be directed on the throne the first few time i put it on the board.
And as i understand the ruling, Battle of Will help only vs ballista
Ohh one quick question.
It is my understanding that cannonball will touch both the Vampire and the Coven Throne (as if they weren't strong enough already)
does the Charmed Shield protect only the vampire or both ?? Instinctively, i would say only the vampire, but i'm wishful here !!

It all comes back to cannons. The throne does have a 4++ and you can give the rider a ward as well. Does that mean cannons can't kill him? No. It does make him more survivable to them though.
I see this all the time, yet it doesn't stop people from decrying that Terrorghiests are amazing. Cannons kill thim too. So, I'm not saying that cannons are not important to think about. I just find it strange that some pieces like sphynxs and Terrorghiests are takeable yet a coven throne is not even though it can stand up to a cannon better than either of the others. What am I missing here?

A cannon ball hitting a Terrorgheist won't end the game. A cannon ball killing your Lord probably ends the game. That's not to say that this will happen 100% of the time, but it's got a decent chance.
Right now we're talking about a Hero Vampire though, so I suppose that argument doesn't really completely apply. I think the point is just be afraid of cannons.

Granted. A healthy fear of cannons is needed in this game. But yes. hero vampire coven thrones do not suffer the shoot this auto-win that a mounted TG or ZD does.
Hmm... I have yet to see this because I have only theorized about the coven throne. One of my main concerns is how it holds up to missile fire. T5 5+ Armor and 4+ ward vs 30 bow shots? Not sure how well it holds up. I'm probably being paranoid about my luck, and missile fire though.

@Weibs: Don't forget battle of wills as they mustt win that also before they can fire and/or may suffer penalties to hit due to it. It's a fun rule and does add to the already descent defensive capabilities of the CT.
