Is there any advantage to putting a model on a larger base than it comes with?

The one instance that pops to mind would be the furious dreadlance bearer on a humble nightmare. put him on a 50x50 base (purely for modelliing purposes, of course) and on the charge there's a better chance to dedicate attacks to special squishy bits.

I can see for RnF you'd want to go with as small a base as possible - fewer attacks onto defensive units and more concentrated attacks from Great Grave Guard.

Is this powergaming at it's worst, or is there a legitimate argument for this?

You can if you wish put your models on bases larger then their normal size but not anything smaller. Personally I wouldn't condone this and would stick to the correct sizes indicated in the book.

I wouldn't mind if you had one or two models with larger base sizes for modeling purposes though...

Yeah while, tactically, that's a good move, metagame-wise, it's a very bad one.

Do you play at a local shop or with a game community? That's like pissing in your own well. It's technically within the rules, but it could very well be considered a bitch move. It'll really only serve to piss folks off, and may well cause other to do it. Like I said, if you play in a community, if that stuff spreads it could change the whole face of the game...

I really dont see any advantages, game-wise, to have a larger base. More enemy models hitting your vamp. That can never be a good thing.

It really would be a stupid thing to do. That's pretty much it.

There are far too many base-size-dependent rules in this game to afford playing around with bases.

A random advantage to abuse, for example, would be from the Warriors of Chaos item 'Berserker Sword'. To paraphrase: the character gets more attacks the more enemies he is touching. The advantage to be gained through screwing with base size is obvious here, as is with the many 'zap-amulets' that several armies have.

'Unit-popping' would be a more abstract concept of abuse, also. I can imagine a cheeky Orc general modelling a snotling base half the size of the board and 'popping' fanatics through it.

Thanks all

I wasn't terribly fussed by the idea, and the examples you've given show how easily bases could be abused.

Does anybody put a mounted character in with infantry? If so, how do you get everybody to rank up? Just leave a gap at the back of the second rank so everybody can shuffle into place?

That one :)

It's much safer to keep your mounted vamp and necros in infantry. You can always break them away, later if you want.

Imagine putting zombies on larger bases. They would be much better because they die in droves anyway and larger bases would let them take up more space.
