How is it best to use bat swarms? The ASL could help but how do we keep them from surrendering ridiculous amounts of combat res?

Deploy them 1 wide, 2 deep. Their frontage is then 1 x 40mm model.

The key to bat swarms = combo charging with CHs or ghouls With a combo charge the bats are hanging out on the end, limiting attacks back.[/u]

They are elves' worst nightmare as you can lift swordmasters, white lions, corsairs, black guard etc.

Their charge distance is super high with 3d6+10" so many opponents will forget about the devistation these babies can cause.

Hmmm... now that I think about it, it won't affect Swordmasters or whitelions, bc they now have the ASL rule with their GWs, and bat swarms can't stack onn this... with 7th ed HE it used to remove their reolls.

Though still are effective against phoenix guard, and ALL DE, and any other high initiative units.

If you have the advantage of having several swarms the scotn power make them invaluable. A level 4 will add one base per invo. I've found it to be quite effective once they move into b2b. Giving extra wounds above starting size is one of my favorite things about the swarms. Plus the look on your opponents face when you grab a whole new base is priceless.

Umm...you meant swiftstride and 10 inches, right? So the best 2 of 3D6.

As a flying unit is 1 base wide illegal?

I thought flying units skirmished and therefore had no real formation? Additionally, they had to maximize frontage on the charge to comply with "as many" fighting as possible standard of the rules?

The skirmish rules have been drastically reworked. a skirmish unit sets up in ranks in files just like any other unit, you just space out each mini by .5 inches. There's no more blob formations with skirmish, just a bigger spaced unit. So while yes, they do have to maximize frontage just like everyone else, they also have ranks and files, just like everyone else. As a convention at my local gaming store we just deploy them like every other unit, ignoring the spaces since the skirmish rules cause the spaced out unit to select one model in the front rank, in the center (or two if there are and even number of files) to squish up to this chosen model. essentially skirmish these days it more of a nuisance than a not as you have to use the same rectangular formation, and as soon as something happens, the preset formation is ranked up like every other unit. skirmish just makes it so that a moment tray has to be custom made.

Hoverers are a subset of flyers, the rules for hover a governed under the fly rules. And the rule is listed in the same place in the BRB. even then the flyer rules have not stipulation on how they must be formed up, they only add the skirmish rule to the unit. That rule has all the organization oddities. And even then it doesn't say a unit has to be xx many models wide. One base per rank, in 2 to 3 ranks is the way to go.

A little, it helps much more on small base sizes, the templates are 3" and 5" which is 76.4mm and 127mm respectively, with the .5" space taking up 12.7mm, in the bats swarms case, or any other skirmisher with a 40mm base size or higher the number of minis that could be hit are roughly the same. I will grand that with smaller base size the skirmish rules do allow for fewer models hit.
