Had a game last night against ogres and my opponent claimed that gnoblar trappers would force my hexwraiths to take dangerous terrain tests. I said they were only effected by magic, magical items etc... and did not take dangerous terrain tests. Just to make it it perfectly sure - was I correct as the chap was adamant. On the same note would this effect black knights as the skeletal steeds are ethereal?

Well the hexwraiths are definitely immune because they can only be harmed by magical attacks. If the thing trying to hurt them doesn't have the magical attacks special rule then it cannot do any damage to them.

Regarding black knights and trappers, it depends entirely on the wording which I am not familiar with. If the trappers rule says 'counts as charging through difficult terrain' then I'd say you don't take the hits, because you count the dangerous terrain as clear. If the trappers rules says 'the charging unit must take dangerous terrain tests' or any other variant to that effect, then you have to take the tests.

So I can't offer a definite answer without knowing the rule better

I agree with Chaos born,

from the Ogre Kingdoms FAQ v2.0: "Q: If an enemy unit successfully charges the front of multiple units of Gnoblars with the Gnoblar Trappers upgrade, how many Dangerous Terrain tests must models in the enemy unit take? (p48) A: Every model in the unit must take one test."

as your ethereal you are not affected by non magic attacks you dont have to test dangerous terrain..IMO

It says must take a dangerous terrain test as soon as the charge is completed. I take it that this test would still stand even if the gnoblars fleed and were caught?

Yes, you must take the test with the knights then.

As for fleeing gnoblars...I think if you came into contact with the gnoblars with them having fled, that counts as completing the charge and so yes, you would need to take the tests

Black knight skeletal steeds are Ethereal for movement so if they move through or charge through the traps - why would they be effected?
Is this just a question of dubious wording from GW or are we implying that the traps set by gnoblars are ones that start high enough to catch the black knights rding them (floating mid air traps?).

I believe the descriptions of the traps in the trappers entry includes things like releasing bees to attack the chargers. That's the best explanation I can come up with off the top of my head, but you're right it doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

Still, the rules is the rules and we've got to deal with it.

I have it in front of me and it says nothing about releasing bees in the whole of the gnoblars entry page. Most of the desriptions potray ground based traps.

If you catch a fleeing Trapper unit I believe you would not take dangerous terrain because it states you must complete the charge in the trappers front. If they had fled from you, then you would complete the charge in there rear.

I thought black knights couldn't b affected by anything movement based since they are ethereal for the purposes of movement? I'm at work right now so I can't check but assuming there isn't a non-wight character with the black knights shouldn't they ignore dangerous terrain checks?

No, it is not a dangerous terrain test because they moved. It is a dangerous terrain test because they are in BTB with Trappers. Small difference but important difference.

They would ignore the rule if it said 'they count as moving through difficult terrain' because ethereal ignores difficult terrain, but if it simply tells them to take tests then they have to

Well, if it is only because they are in btb contact with Gnoblar, would only the front rank of the Knights take such a test? Or would the whole Unit take it (even if some are not in btb)?

D:

They have to do it, but it doesn't effect em because it isn't magical. Ethereal creatures can only be wounded by spells, magical attacks and magic weapons or effects.
