Black Nightmares

I am getting ready to paint my unit of Black Knights and have been unable to decide how to proceed with the horses flesh. To paint a black nightmare, use black undercoat followed by grey highlights?

Does anyone have any tips or a tutorial of any kind that can be used for horses?

what I did was use black sprey paint and then use aduptus battlegrey as high lights and then put red eyes

Check out GW's home page and look at dark riders to see how they did black horses. It's probably the most common way of painting black.

Try Charadon Granite, its a very dark greyish black, with a slight dark green tint. I would suggest, doing a 50/50 mix with black over a pure black basecoat, followed by this color straight. Mix in Codex Grey sparingly for further highlights! I personally refrain from the GW suggested blending of black with greys and white since it gives an artificial look, not something you want on something organic, such as a horse. The suggested way by GW seems better suited to cloths and inorganic objects in my opinion.

I would undercoat in a black/Scorched Brown 60/40 mix, then add in tiny amounts of bleached bone for successive highlights.

Black alone is a "dead" tone, does not reflect colour. You need to mix it with something warmer.

Really you should never use Black or White on their own on a 28mm figure unless for lining or the very top highlight. You are always better off adding a tint of colour for painting larger areas as it gives you more options on shade and highlight tones.

One thing that you should remember while painting "black horses" is that in real life the horse is not pure black as you would theoretically think it to be but rather a deep and dark brown, and very much borderline on black.
