So I must start off by saying I hate cavalry in 8th. Not enough punch to strip ranks and all that. But looking over Blood Knights they seem to have a insanely high damage output. But the cost is still tripping me up, so are they worth it?

Im new to VC but I have proxied blood knights in about 5 games now and they rock. They stay around for a long time and deal a ton of damage, if you put them into the right unit. I run a vamp hero in a unit of 5 and use the flag of blood keep. Its worth every pt usually after one round of shooting they realize there are other things that are much easier to shoot. This is in a 3K list in my 2.5k list i dont use them.

They hit like a train and will kill almost anything.
The down side is if they don't kill what the hit they may crumble and they are expensive to the point it really damn well hurts.
Also without their banner they can be very vulnerable but you take a good sized unit with a vampire chopy hero and you are laughing.

I love Blood Knights, they have always done well for me. I also like it when I play a Britonian player and see the envy in their eyes.

I have not taken them in the new book yet and am not sure how well they will do without blood drinker and Vanhels to ensure a charge. Before they were pretty much point and release, now they might sit out a turn to position correctly.

I did find that artillery was not a big deal for them with a 4+ ward save and blood drinker. They only fail Dwellers or purple sun on a 6. The only fear I have is Mindrazor and units that have lots of attacks because some armor saves will be failed.

Now I would likely have my fighty lord and a normal vamp and settle for 2 IoNs.

Also I want to point out that in my opinion a Kastellan has never been worth the points.

I do want to see how they do with Staff of Damnation. I am also thinking I'll need a pack or two of wolves for support.

In the end, they can not do what they used to in 7th, so my mindset with them is they are just another unit that hits hard, is fast, durable and can be outnumbered. Flank charges are best to reduce the number of attacks coming your way, and don't be surprised if you have some bad luck and 2-3 die in a single round of CC, just do your best to get them back.

last night i took the following:

5 blood knights
musician
standard bearer /w Flag of the Blood Keep

Vampire
Barded Nightmare
Heavy Armour
Lance
BSB
Enchanted Shield
Quickblood

i then hit 2 mourfang in the face, they died before moving. over ran into the flank of 4 mournfang and did 11 wounds before they moved, my mounts then finished the last would off. they then overan into the flank of the general/BSB unit of 9 ironguts and held them in combat for 3 turns of combat before they all died.

i've used them 2-3 times and have always been hard as nails, and i'm using them as a staple for all future lists i take. even though they are going to get pelted with metal magic and all the shots under the sun...if they are spending 2 turns shooting at blood knights the rest of my army is safe and moving at full strength so either way they are worth the points you invest.

i play a lot of ETC/comped warhammer at my club, and i feel that blood knights are now the only 'Hammer' unit in the book that can take a punch back and not die too fast.

take a punch? blood knights?

ever play against an army with 2 cannons, one in each corner?

bye bye knights

i never took them with blood drinker and they were always outside of vanhels anyway. You can't really send them against units with say 5 ranks or more, but anything less than that and they can easily pound them into submission. they deal a silly ammount of damage and against say warriors of chaos or lizardmen their strength is invaluable. Not a lot can take a charge from 5 blood knights and still be around, never take a Kastellan though. It's even better with the new rules as they are now slightly cheaper as a unit and are statistically better.

Something of interest, I just got 5 blood knights for $60 and am pretty sure I can save even more. I'll be making a post about it later tonight.

Sneak Peak: Tao Bao!

Yeah, I'd go for the conversion route if I were to play Blood Knights. I don't care how gorgeous those models are, they're not worth the $200 USD you have to plunk down to get a respectable unit's worth.

As for the gameplay aspect... their Frenzy has me a bit worried if you don't roll them out with a Vampire Lord (and that in itself is even more all-eggs-in-one-basket than what I'm comfortable with), and then there's the standard concerns about artillery shooting (especially cannons and Doom Divers), though the Flag of Blood Keep addresses those to a certain extent.

You could also use bits from the Black knights frame, It has plenty of winged helms and bat themed iconography. I plan to convert some from either Empire knightly orders, or Bret knights of the realm. The biggest issue i see with the GW blood knights is that they only come in the box of 5 with FC, if you want to add additional models to the unit it can be very expensive.

I have to disagree strenuously with that. Little Vargs and Crypt Horrors will find their way into most lists, whereas Blood Knights are a niche choice at best. Single-Wound models that cost more than monstrous infantry is not exactly screaming "must have". Plus, you've already noted they're overcosted - the same can't be said for little Vargs (who FLY, for the love of Nagash) and Crypt Horrors.

I play High Elves and Dwarves a lot and so rarely take them.
I find that against high elves they are nearly useless because they cannot charge swormaster/whitelions because they die before striking. against dwarves they got shot to pieces even with flag of blood keep. If I put them on the flank then bolt throwers/cannons can hit their flank and then.... poof goes the unit (about 1/3 of the time).

Any tips on how to use them against the above mentioned armies?

Since the new book we have a few new tricks. Bat swarms vs high elves, have those knights charge together with them, since the bats give always strike last.
Against canons you could try to have fell bats or vargheit try to get in combat with the crew as soon as possible, they can't shoot in combat.
Other thing is to try and have as many different threats on the table and picks other things to shoot at.

Because it's Warhammer!

Personally i dont care were my minis come from aslong as they look good and are not stupid expensive, like most GW minitures, spirit hosts come to mind.

Why not just use the mantic miniture ones? You even get a vamp lord in the box.

I would rather get beaten with a pipe than paint or use mantic minis....

More OT I just dont mind a use for them when wraith units cost the same amount of points
