Scrolling through the forum and checking peoples armylists I was wondering one thing... (sorry if this been answered before btw.) ... I Was wondering why people use vampires as their BSB.

As I haven't read the big read book for a while I wouldnt bet my life on it but I belive I've somewhere got the information that if a character is available to be the Battle standard bearer it's noted in the armybook.

Wight Kings can therefore be Battle standard bearers since it's an upgrade available for them (for 35 point i belive, don't have my armybook at hand atm.)

My point is, there is no such input in the armybook for vampires and i cant find any updates or faq about it on GW. And therefore vampires can't be the BSB. Or am I mistaken?

First off taking a bsb in most circumstances is a rather bad idea. I would even go sp far as to say: "only include one on a CT vamp. or a hellsteed vamp. intended to go solo.!

Under the entry in our armybook page 88:
Battle standard bearer:
One vampire or wight king in the army may carry the battle standard for 25 points...

so they are allowed to be a BSB.

hope this helped clear things up.! Feel free to ask if you have other questions :)

Thank you for the quick reply!

That really cleared things up, seems that i missed the text "Vampire or" and just read - One Wight king, since the note was directly below the wight king post in the armybook.

Sometimes you don't read things you think you know properly.

Thank you :)

Glad to be of service ! And trust me that is one of the most common mistakes we make.

How come? In these parts, a WK BSB is very much a given (if you're gonna bring a WK anyway, LD9 and all that, might as well drop 25pts extra, which usually gets its points' worth if it prevents, like, 2 GG from crumbling)?
I'd just like to hear the reasoning on that, maybe I'm missing something...

Well, taking a bsb doesnt really offer that much of a bonus tbh. What good is ld9? what do we use ld for? A Bsb is used to reroll failed leadershiptests, which we never have to do. Unless caught by a spell which is quite rare tbh.

So the only reason to take it is to reduce the crumble after CR by 1 wound.... so i dont know how you save 2 GG but that is not possible. You could save 1 but not 2.

I never take a bsb unless im playing a bkbus, which then really can be useful for saving a blackknight. Otherwise its just a bogus upgrade

There is one normal Ld-test even we make from time to time, and at least I use it quite often. The swift reform. Can be very handy to have a re-roll for those, especially if you run a Master Necro as your general, as he is only Ld 8.

I have never taken a BsB unless I need a extra banner in a unit. Not worth the 100 points you give up if/when he dies.

Some lore of Slaanesh spells make you take ld tests...

Some lord of slaanesh spells....
A swift reform....

Those are two things that i do only once every three games on average.

If id take a GG-list i might think of it

I think Wk BSB are underrated.
they will give you a ld9 crumble test if general dies for the unit he is with.

Thats not bad in my book

But he does that without being a BSB.. The fact that you give up 100 extra VP if/when he dies is not worth the swiftreform / slanesh / one less crumble perks.. Those are nice but not worth 25 points and 100 potential VP..

On a CT it adds enough to be justified but not by much..!

its also worth two in a losing combat or one in a combat you are winning. i find it very rare my battle standard dies so the 100 extra victory points is no biggy to me

yeah I've been wondering more and more about the value of a BSB.

I've never taken one yet since I don't think I've ever needed to do a leadership test but I've been wondering about reduced crumbling and extra CR. Also I've been wondering about have 2 magic banners in a unit but I'm not sure if that would gimp the Wight King too much - anyone have any experience using 2 magic banners in a unit? Is there a combo that works well?

I never go without a BSB Wight King and find it quite valuable. I use it for:
- Often making room for Banner of Swiftness.
- Two less models on unstable casualties.
- March near enemy rerolls.
- Quick Reform rerolls.
- Against various spells and effects
- Rerolling that nasty possession test on Demons magic table
- General Death Crumble (very rarely)

Especially march and quick reform rerolls can be really critical depending on your playstyle.

"Often making room for Banner of Swiftness."

The most under rated item in the game I feel

why? i hardly ever take it with my blackknights, usually going for lichebone, strider or warbanner
So i have 1" less movement, and 1" less on the charge, with swiftstride rule rolling 3 dice, i usually make the charge anyway. Rare have been the occasions where that 1" was the tipping point. Ofc i have had occasions and i can completely understand the use etc.

Yet i dont experience it as that much good of an item, nor is it underrated. Id even go as far as saying its overrated by certain players.

hmm, it's not really about improving your chances to "make the charge". It's about having the extended movement and charge reach. This is important when working to outmaneuvre or put preassure on your opponent in the movement phase.

But I think we play the army very differently, and thats all good. One of the things I really enjoy about VC is that it can be played in so many ways.
