Casting from the Second Rank?

Salutations Readers,

Played last night and we thought there was a rule stopping Mages casting spells if they were not in the front rank of a unit, however we could not find it in the 8th edition rule book...

So if a Mage flees a challange and goes to the back or you have 3 Characters + 3 Command so one is in the second rank [if 5 wide] can they still cast spells?

A. Yes.

but that might be specific to the lance formation as it allows active characters in the second rank.

Obviously, a wizard not in the front rank (or 2nd rank on a lance formation, if a Damsel) can not cast spells that require LOS.

While characters are normally forced to the front rank due to other "character" related rules, I don't think that there's any specific rules that stops a caster from casting if they aren't in the front rank.

The wizard can cast spells from the second rank if he have LoS to the enemy which its very possible that he have thanks to that there is always holes in the front rank. TLoS remember?

i was under the impresion that the when the character refusses a challenge the character is placed in the back rank for THAT PHASE. I could be wrong as i don't have my book infront of me, but thats how a friend of mine scrwed me a few games ago... i'll look it up next year

Well, that was the rule in 7th. But after looking in the rule book seems they have changed a couple things. If you refuse the challenge your opponent can nominate a character to retire. But according to the rule he doesn't have to go to the back rank. All you have to do is retire him to a rank where he is not in b2b contact with the enemy. So it seems you can retire him to any rank you wish...2nd, 3rd and so on. And it says nothing about moving him back...at anytime...So it would seem that he is stuck where you put him. Unless you do a reform.....

midean: That's interesting, since if you retire a character to the second rank he would still be able to fight, only with one attach but fight non the less. But I suppose, if all that stands in the BRB is that the character must be out of BtB contact then I guess its legal..

Right before it says to move the character back in the ranks so that it's not in B2B contact... it states that the character is not allowed to attack that round.

So you could retire him to the 2nd rank he just wouldn't be able to attack. And as for the OP with the Brett faq seems a caster in the 2nd rank has the same Tlos as archers who fire from the 2nd rank. I have been using this ruling with my ork shamans putting them in the 2nd rank and casting from there. Nobody has had any problems with it.
