Can somebody clear this up for me please!

In a challenge, a character steps off his mount to fight the other dude. But do the units keep fighting?

if so...

what happens if the characters keep fighting and a unit is killed by the other and must break? Does the challange end as the unit runs?

If the one unit has been killed by the other unit and the challange is still going on, can the surviving unit be charged and/or may it charge?

If a Vampire is in a challange and its unit is killed, can it crumble?


It might be more clear in the 7th ed. rulebook but i dont have it, so i dont know. Its a long story, dont ask, but im still on 6th edition as i have been for a few years now.

First, the character(s) do not step off the mount in a challenge. Whether they're mounted on a horse or a dragon, they don't step off it.

The units keep fighting. All Combat Resolution is added to the combat from the units fighting and the models in the challenge. If the unit runs, then the model in the challenge runs along with it, so yes, the challenge ends.

If the one unit has been killed by the other unit and the challange is still going on, can the surviving unit be charged and/or may it charge?

Both units can be charged. If there is still a challenge going on, it's still considered a unit if only a single model. If the unit has been killed but has not broken, the challenge continues. The surviving Challenger can be charged, but not attacked (but this can be important for flanking bonuses, or rear bonuses, or outnumber, warbanner, etc)

If a Vampire is in a challange and its unit is killed, can it crumble?

Absolutely.

They get everything from their mount. Saves, special abilities, their mounts can still attack, they count their US for combat res, etc, etc.

Have a question.

My Vampire in a Grave Guard unit screams whit all his power, CHALLENGE and a Tome Prince in a Tome Guard unit answer the challenge. The Vampire have the highest I so he will strike first, he kill the prince and now will the units fight. We say that the Tome Guards won the last combats so they will strike first, now the question.

Can the Tome Guards base to base whit the Vampire hit on the Vampire?

Please give the page number in the rule book too.

Page 77, left hand column, second from last paragraph " When combat is worked out, these two will fight together. No other model may attack them or their mount, even if their bases are touching".

The model that accepts the challenge has to be moved to be opposite the model that issued the challenge.

I feel challenges are getting more and more common place. This is especially the case with the new Eye of the Gods table. Perhapes it is time for our vampires to start carrying the Cursed Book again? I just wish the Kastellan could take it!

I always have Cursed Book when I fighting Nurgel, the Great Unclean one. I know you should just ignore him, but I'm a Vampire whit honour. I must kill him. ^^

Challenges are not complicated, but people often overcomplicate them. An accepted challenge does exactly two things:
1) allocate attacks
2) allow overkill

Everything else continues as normal. EVERYTHING!!!

I'm borrowing this thread as my question is on the same subject.. The rules are rather strange when it comes to one thing in challenges, but the question is simple:
In a fight between two units, if a challenge is uttered and answered, does the rest of the units still fight eachother? In the rules it just says that the other models can't hit the two people in the challenge, but later it states (about overkill) that the rest of the unit stands around cheering for their champion... So, once again, does the rest of the unit (rank-and-file, champs, characters) fight as normal vs eachother

And just one question more, in a challenge with a mounted character, does the mount fight too? Or just the character on it..

Sorry for questions that might appear obvious to you, but I don't have the BrB and I'm new to the game..

First off; get the base rulebook. Period. Non-negotiable. Just do it.

Moving on to your questions...

The only thing that a challenge does is put the two models involved (and their mounts and items and everything about them) in their own little zone, think of it as a different combat that shares resolution (including break tests/crumbling).

The rules are actually very clear that the other people in the units still fight each other, the "stand around and cheer" bit is when a unit + character is fighting a character... in which case they're standing around because they can't interfere with the challenge and there's no other enemy to fight.

As said before in this very thread, everything on the character's base fights as though it was a part of the character. Doesn't matter if it's Nurglings, a familiar, a horse, or a dragon- it fights with the character against whatever is on the other guy's base.

EDIT: Sorry about the tone... I reworked the post a little bit but I still feel bad about it. Sorry mate, didn't mean to snap at you- but the answers to these questions are clearly stated in the base rulebook, and it's quite important to have. The only thing more important than it is your army book and perhaps a general and two core choices- after that you should really get your hands on it, if for no other reason than to make more informed unit selections while you put your army together. If you get the bigger book then it can do wonders for writing fluff and other non-combat things, too.

Anyway, good luck with your new army, and good luck getting a new job... man do I feel bad now... :'(

Thanks for the quick response, even one written in such a condesending tone, just wanted to clear it up..
And yes, I will eventually purchase the book, but since I only started playing a couple of weeks ago and already spent roughly $250, wich is alot of money for someone that's currently out of a job and has huge loans I figured it's more important to get a playable army than sitting around, reading a rulebook with rules I can't put into practice..
