Can you help me to understand once an for all how characters in units work. For example I had a banshee in a unit and it was on the far right front rank. From that point it was farther than 8 inches for the howl from the enemy. However, the left corner of the unit was within 8 inches. I assumed since the banshee was part of the unit I could consider the other corner as close enough. Is it or do I need to measure from where the banshee is in the unit

If I measure from the banshee then during the movement phase can I move the banshee to the left corner such as "make way". If I had to move it to be in range and I used the "make way" does that restrict my troops movement

I guess my question really involves can the Unit base be the point of measurement.

another Example with the vampire magic it must be within 12 inches is that from the vampire or the unit he is in. This make a difference if you have a vampire in a horde of grave guard because he could be in the left quarter so does he get the far right quarter of the horde unit to measure or the vampire himself. Again can the vampire move then in the front row with no impact no impact to movement

Thanks for clarity

as far as I know -

you can do a reform/swift reform to move characters around in the unit,

if in combat you can "make way" if stranded or "combat reform" after first round as long as you don't move out of base contact with an enemy you might have been in contact with.

hope this helps

also spells & abilities & howls are measured from the model using them I believe

distances are measured from where the model actually is. yes you can change where the character is in the unit, but it will eat into your movement allowance. vampires and banshees have a higher move value than our infantry so they should be able to relocate across a small unit. if you wished to cross a horde however, the unit they are with would essentially have to stand still.

Page 10 BRB FaQ:
Q: Can characters change position inside a unit as part of a
normal move?(p97)

A: Yes, as long as they end up in the rank closest to the front
of the unit that has a space in. It is also worth remembering
that even if only the character moves the whole unit will
count as moving that turn. Having a belligerent officer barge
his way through the unit is not conducive to a good round of
shooting!

Now, I've always read that as if the characters move is "free", so you don't have to consider the characters movement allowance. Though look back at the FaQ I'm not so sure anymore, and I'm starting to think I'm just assuming things from previous editions.

I think moving within your unit during the move phase is free but counts as moving with regards to shooting or magic.

Bounce has it right. Character movement within the unit is free distance wise. But the unit counts as having moved.
