Collection-Does it stop?

I saw a random post on Warseer, and it got me thinking after I read a few of the replies.

How many models/points do you have for your armies? Are you going to stop collecting? Is enough ever enough? Is there a point in collecting where you go, "Dang. I really don't need that extra box of Zombies." But then your Demon on your shoulder talks you into buying it anyways?

Do you ever plan on stopping the hobby at a certain point? I.E. I've got this entire Space Marine Chapter. All of it. I'm done man, I'm done! No more blue paint!

Or, like I'm planning on... "Dude. You've got over 300 skellies. Stoppit. No more!" Me: "One more box...Must...have...MORE!"

So, what say you? Keep going, or eventually stop?

I really will never stop this endless shopping spree lol! I've just fallen in love with both universes and would hate to see it go because of those damn idiots in marketing...

I keep telling myself I have a set limit but that limit is susceptible to change. For VC I'm going for 3.000pts plus 4-5 extra units for variant army lists.

Well I plan to like stop building a VC army when I get to 5000pts which I'm only about 500pts off I think. But I will still propably still buy at least the odd box of models from their range for one reason or another like conversions or something. But once I have my 5000pts (+summoning but thats mainly a load of bases with a gravestone on which I already have)
I plan to concentrate more on a Dark Elf and an Empire Army (unless prices get higher then I will propably stop but more through force than choice)

For me the hobby just sucks me in deeper and deeper. Just got my 1k blood angels force done, but it will grow... also just started out eldar. And I've placed an order on some battle fleet gothic models aswell... dang. It just keep on going!

I don't see myself stopping any time soon. :tongue:

Well. That depends on quite a number of factors. Given the number of armies I actually have, I'd say I've slowed down a LOT in the last 12 months or so (The Beasts of Chaos army was a NEW army for me, so I listed that seperately).

I'd say that generally once an army is done, it is done for me (barring rules changes/new editions). I have a couple of armies that I've got NOTHING for in the last 12 months: Dark Eldar, Chaos Marines. Dark Elves, and Space Marine armies have actually gotten smaller (I have a finite amount of space for gaming stuff, as I imagine most ppl do).

Here's my estimates on retail purchases in last 12 months:
- 2 squads of Dire Avengers (Eldar - due to changes in 5th requiring more Troop choices)
- Varghulf (actually won 75% of it as "prize" credit in a tourney)

ebay/bartertown/etc:
- 5 OOP Dark Elf Cold Ones (conversions for Blood Knights, to match since my Black Knights and Black Coach are also Cold Ones)
- 5 Wraiths
- 3 Spirit Hosts
- 8 Mounted Yeoman
- 2 way OOP Rhinos (for conversion into Exorcists)
- various bitz

Beasts of Chaos:
- (retail) Giant
- (retail) 1 Box of Beasts of Chaos
- (retail) 1 Box of Chaos Marauders Mounted (conversion - Centigors)
- 1 Chaos Marauder Mounted (conversion - Centigors)
- 6 Minotaurs
- 2 Minotaur Lords
- 2 Shamans
- 4 Dragon Orges
- 1 box of Beasts of Chaos
- 1 Chariot
- 15ish Chaos Warhounds

So, I guess it depends on how you look at it.

Eventually it stops. You have your thousand skeletons. You then get your full chapter of Marines.

And then GW releases new models, as soon as you finish your painstakingly completed over years army.

And it releases them, all shiny, beautiful and lovely. And you have to collect all those models again. Every last one, so that your army is not outdated.

No, it never stops.

I'm a bit of both on this one.

Some armies I've done I have no interest on enlarging beyond the inital 2000 points/army list. (daemons, brets)

Others can go a bit further for some variation in builds. (tomb kings, and VC will probably go here too)

My ogre however, got up to 20000 points (although I've sold a bit off now so its down to maybe 12-15 thousand instead) and I still love 'em.

I'll be buying and painting a space marine battle company too, with lots of transport options - but that's a painting exercise rather than something to game with.

You have a very good point there. I suffer from the "ooh it's shiny and new"-curse. My DE army now has four units of Cold One Knights from the ugly metal lizards to the not so uglu to the "Godzilla's" and the new gorgeous plastics. I can imagine going nuts if they decide to release a VC second wave :silent:

Every time I play an army I see another one I want. I can't say I want new armies for their play-style or rules, but for the models. For the longest time it has taken a great deal of my self-control to stop me from:
-Buying an Eldar Army.
-Buying an Imperial Guard Army.
-Buying a High Elf Army.
-Buying a Tomb Kings Army.
-Going back to my Wood Elf Army.
-Infinitely expanding my Tyranid Army.
-Buying a Chaos Warriors Army.
-Buying a Chaos Daemons Army.
-Going back to my Chaos Space Marine Army.
-Buying another Chaos Space Marine Army.
-Buying a Space Marine Army.
Yeah...
And as for limits!? Hah! I need no limits! I like big games, and the more points I can jam into them the bigger and better they will be. If I see a deficiency in my Legenday Battles or Apocalypse forces, I don't stop it up by changing the role of an existing unit or just playing smarter, I buy another unit!

For me, never. I love this hobby, the models, the fluff, the gaming, the, well, everything! My one desire is to be like a certain friend of mine's father. His basement is absolutely STOCKED with almost every one of GW's models, I've found 2nd edition humans stacked on top of a sealed box of The Cursed Company, all buried under 42 metal Dryads. I swear, when I'm in that basement, I feel in a way that no other place ever has made me feel.

I don't really have any limits I set my self but neither have I got any goals except to spend my free hours in a fun way, develop my skills and find a way to vent my creativity. This usually comes in the form of my chaos army but sometimes small side projects arise like my current undead thing (which is probably the first to get to maturity before it dies like my SM did, my orks, my goblin army, ...)

With my chaos: everytime I make a list and notice there's something I don't have, i make it. When I get a cool idea for a unit/conversion/character I make it. Everytime I feel the rush to convert (doesn't have to be an idea present) I grab my bitzbox and see what I can slap together. This is the way my army has grown over the years to the current 10K it is.

my favourite thing about warhammer is collecting and converting. So most of my army will be converted and once i done that i will use normal box sets and after that convert. My army will build up slower as i might need to buy zombies and men at arms to make a cool looking zombie squad for me.

I almost never take an army above about 3,000 points. Then again, I count each themed army as something different.

My Carnivale army, for example, is approaching 3000 points and I don't really expect to put any more into it. But I've got a Strigoi army under way that's already over 2000 points and a Barrow Kings TK/VC army that is around 2000 points. So I keep buying more VC, but they are for different armies.

At it's height, my Imperial Guard clocked in at aroudn 15,000 points, but that was four different armies. And I've begun contemplating a fifth IG army.

So, the shortened version of this story is: No, I don't expect to stop collecting any time soon.

Well, I'll propably keep expanding my Skaven onwards to a larger and larger army (and yes, unfortunately I have to paint that as well ), but seeing how little money is spent on purchases, I guess that'll just be a gradual process... Still, there's nothing as funny as seeing your mate's face just turn pale when you field over half a dozen of metal Skaven units due to having gone on a metal shopping spree on eBay. :mrgreen:

No it never stops. I was out of the hobby for years, never thought about it. Then when one of my extended family said he played it that was all it took to pull me back in. Now i am finishing my vamps as i have all i want. Next is some orks and lizardmen. Its like a cult, you never really leave. And it sucked me right back in.
