I've always liked the look of cork bases, but I've never tried it. How durable is it? I worry that the cork would shed cork particulate because of handling and gaming.

I have done rocks with cork before, although not entire bases. The cork is more durable then you might think and it takes quite alot of force to break it off.

I use cork on my bases and it becomes really durable. You don't need to coat it at all either. When you've got it modeled then just prime it. I use black with different gray drybrushes but after its done you really have to work at it to chip it.
I don't know where you live but if there's an Ikea near you they sell cork placemats for cheap. Get a pack of them and they will last you forever.

I've recently started using cork for my new space marine project. No games played yet, but I'm surprised by how tough the cork is when modelling with it. For example, I'm drilling holes in it to fit wire reinforcing bars (I'm doing the broken reinforced concrete look) because the cork is too hard to just push the wire into.
Cork loves super glue and primer. My chaos dwarves are based on it and never had to do any repairs

The IKEA placement mat idea as suggested above is the exact same thing I did and the cost next to nothing, and the thickness of each "sheet" is perfect!

And use small blobs of green stuff to attach your minis to the cork. I find that works better than super glue.

I started using cork almost immediately after I started the hobby back in 2005. Very easy to work with. I haven't found any reason to seal it. As said above just primer it. Sometimes it's difficult to get into all the little nooks with spray paint, so I'll just touch up with a brush and some black paint.
Super glue has always worked well for me. I usually just super glue fig to cork. I have only had trouble, and a small amount at that, with really heavy models with small points of contact. The old metal Beastmen Minotaurs were ripped off their bases a few times (maybe 3 times in the last 8 years), but fixing it was easy.
Haven't had any trouble with plastics or the resin guys coming off.
