Hi there,

just watned to know, are there many dungeons and dragons enthousiast here?
Im wanting to try the boardgame and see what its like. Most of my friends arent into warhammer since it has too much rules.
I play a lot of 'colonisten van cathan' with them (dont know if you guys know this game) and dont know if its in english versions...

But that game gives little imagination as for the fantasy feel.
We do play some magic the gathering, but here also, the imagination is a bit lackluster.
We do go to the occasional fantasy-fair and get all barbarian/knightly/wizardy so there is some spirit in all of it.

So my questions;
- how good is a D&D boardgame?
- D&D books without the board, probably too difficult to start? (were not the best storytellers)
- Does it have any good replay value's? i see something like 11 quests in one box, but do they cut it?

I tried the search but couldnt find any real thread about this so please share experiences!

many thanks for you reading this and would love to hear from your exp :)

The dungeons and dragons board game is barely roleplaying at all. It's just that: a board game. However there is the actual dungeons and dragons roleplay, which is the original RPG and is fantastic.

Don't bother with the board game, instead take a look here to learn about the real D&D

What's even better, now with edition 4 out you can get 3.5 for cheap everywhere. Get a Player's guide and DM guide and go from there!

Nope I do not like 4th edition at all.

It all depends whether you'd like an actual role-playing game or board game with replay value. Fantasy Flight Games has some pretty nice board games that kept me and my friends occupied for a long time. You'd better already be playing Munchkin!

I guess the game you mentioned in English is Settlers of Cathan, which is a pretty good game IIRC.

The D&D boardgame is fairly good I have heard, though it is not much of a roleplaying game like CBorn says, but neither is the real D&D if you ask me (especially not 4th edition).

I'm not that into D&D myself, but I do play a lot of boardgames and a few roleplaying games, so if you'd like I could suggest a few games (Chaos in the Old World i great!).

A player who rolls hilariously bad (or good) rolls that kill the entire party. Such as accidentally vaporising the entire party, graveyard and the entrance to the catacombs, leaving our objective unreachable.

He detailed it all on another thread, but feel free to rehash!

Roleplaying is a vague term that can mean many things to many people.

Normally, it means creating a communal story within a framework of rules. Different levels of rules and different levels and types of story telling suit different people.

If you are looking at roleplaying ad aren't godo at story telling, I think 4th Ed. would be more up your alley. There is also a host of scenarios other people have made online. 4th is a tight framework to deal with combat from what I've seen, where previous editions were much more loose and gave more focus to the story.

I have always enjoyed the acting and story much more than the rules themselves, but everyone has fun in different ways. I recommend 4th :D

Note that you'll need books, some dice, and a big eraseable grid to draw on with a dry erase marker (well worth the investment).

I've only known 4th edition D&D, much like 8th edition fantasy it was the release that got me into it. However from what I've read online, it sounds like 4th is most suitable for our group due to the more combat centric nature of it.

Yep, I much prefer 3.5 as well, but because he said they're not much of a story teller, and seem to be more game/tactic focused, this might be better.

3.5 is meant for storytelling.
4.0 is meant for MMORPGs on paper it seems.

Thats how I view them.

Downloading it for free is a very good point though Sanai.

oke, good to read all these replys.
now some other questions that come up.

My gaminggroup isnt the real storytelling one. I could be the dungeonmaster and put in the efforts of getting the story going. and i have some friends who are willing to give it a try. so best i think, should be to get the 3.5 for free and go and try it/?

so i guess i should get the player handbook, and many other books? i found this linkbut i dont know if i could post this (forumrule wise)
but trying these should be good i guess?

better get to reading! :P

The Wizards of the Coast website has free playtesting material up. They're gearing up for 5th edition and are looking from player input since for the most part 4th edition was tanked because of fan outrage leading to poor sales. Might be a good thing to jump on 5th edition early since that will be the new rule set.

I play 3.5 personally. World of Darkness, Shadowrun, a few others are also fun.

And Chaos In the Old World is also a fantastic game
+1

Even more so with the expansion, the only thing I won't go near from fantasy flight is the new wfrp, it just sounds awful, and there was nothing wrong with the green ronin ruleset.

I'm a lapsed roleplayer, haven't played in ages but always loved warhammer fantasy rp, and like the new 40k rp books, especially the look of the new ig one.

guess ill have to try some 5th edition D&D stuff then. scanning trough the 3.5 rules makes some sense though a LOT of material to get trough

thanks for your comments. im on my way with 'the guys' and such
