Below is a run down of how things went turn for turn, written by a mixture of myself and my brother depending on who could type, but in short, I came up with the following dilemma: although I took a list based on my coolest models, and in many aspects is weak, the zombie dragon/Vampire Lord build was literally untouchable, and the turns in which he just tore through hapless dwarfs without even a scratch were unenjoyable by both parties.

We actually ended the game, thinking there no point in continuing, so brutal was his destruction. However, looking back on it, we counted up the points and realised although it didn't feel like it, the dwarfs won on points denial.

The conclusion we came to were these:
1) (when we both thought I'd won before counting up points) I never want to win through an untouchable God
2) He never wants to win a game through being butchered for the last two turns.

Vampire Counts Turn 1:
The vampire Lord , Heldantes von Carstein, unleashed the hounds and urged his host onwards. So swift was the advance that the dwarves were unprepared. The guns were still being loaded and oiled.

The sky was black with bats. All manner of flying creatures tore their way towards the dwarvern line.

Suddenly the Vampire Lord raised 9 zombies, long dead soldiers of a long forgotten war, in front of the quarrelers!

Dwarfs, Turn 1:
The quarrelers make an unusual charge into the 9 zombies.

The gyro copter flies over 5 dire wolves to drop a bomb, but technical failure leads to it taking a wound instead.

The cannon lines up a shot against the coven throne...and blows up!

Hoping to do better, the organ gun shoots the hexwraiths...and demolishes them! Revenge is sweet.

In combat the quarrelers predictably decimate the freshly raised 9 zombies.

VC turn 2:
The coven throne charges the quarrelers who valiantly stand and shoot. One of the arrows thuds into the vampire!

The undead march onward, relentless. Some ghosts even pass through the ancient tower.

The quarrelers feel their strength sapped while the coven throne seems to grow in power, feeding off their fear.

Amazingly the last quarrelers to die in the shadow of the coven throne managed to get a lucky blow and struck the head from his the Vampire Hero's shoulders!

But the coven throne easily wiped the rest out mercilessly.

Dwarfs Turn 2:
The dwarfs realise the battle is inevitable and begin to march up. Ignored, the gyro maneuvers to flame some ghouls.

The organ gun takes a pop at the vargheists, but their skirmishing rules helps some survive: 4 wounds are lost, leaving two alive, one with only two wounds left.

The iron drakes shoot at the coven throne, causing 5 wounds...but 4 are saved!

A trollerhammer torpedo takes aim at the coven throne...and misses. The dwarfs are not having a good day.

The engineer shoots at some wolves...and does nothing.

Come on, gyro! Burn some ghouls! Eleven ghouls burn!

VC Turn 3:
The vampires pour forth under a volley of (ineffectual) fire! To the horror of the dwarves, even more of the foul beasts begin to crawl from the ground - even those which had just been killed!!

And now the vargeists easily murder the organ gun crew while the engineer falls to the coven throne!

Dwarfs turn 3:
Long beards charge the dire wolves head on, while the iron breakers with Belegar charge some other dire wolves in the flank, and the iron drakes do a swift reform to face and shoot the zombie dragon Lord. Meanwhile, the gyro positions itself to continue flaming at the hapless ghouls.

The first unit of dire wolves predictably pop, but the dwarfs only go 4 inches forward. The flanked unit of dire wolves follow suit, and the iron breakers move 5 inches towards the coven throne.

VC Turn 4:
The vampires easily out maneuver the dwarves. Belegar and his guard take charges from coven throne, spirit hosts, bats and corpse cart, which was a noob move!

The magic is shut down!

21 crypt ghoul attacks leads to...3 dead long beards.

2 ghouls die by the Thane's hand.

5 die from the long beards. Quite a few crumble!

Against the iron breakers, impact hits by the corpse cart and coven throne, plus all attacks on them and by spirit host and bats, kill 4 dwarfs. D'oh!

The coven throne forgets its special rule (which we rolled in hindsight just to see and he rolled a 1 and I a 6 -- lesson learned) and so inevitably the dwarfs killed everything due to crumbling, which left only 4 wounds on one bat left: coven throne, corpse cart, and spirit host all die.

The Lord, in a last ditch attempt, manages to raise yet more zombies to stop the iron breakers getting a fatal flank charge into him, and heals the one wound he lost from being shot earlier. He now charges the long beards in a fit of rage!

He kills 6 on his own and then the dragon murders 3 more! The thane take a wound off the Lord.

The long beards hold valiantly!

Dwarfs Turn 4:
The iron breakers charge the zombies, furious at them being in their way.

The iron drakes kill the vargheists but are still stuck with 10 direwolves in their rear.
The vampire Lord keeps killing.

The Lord continued to butcher the Longbeards until only one remained.

We then stopped typing up but I think it went to Turn 5 before we called it a day (my brother, and myself, being depressed and disgusted by the horrendous slaughter of so many dwarfs) but it basically would have continued with the Vampire Lord charging the iron breakers (blocking the iron drakes ever having a chance to get round to help out) and would have been a slow butchering of them, even with AC+3 and 5++ ward.

However, due to points denial, and all VC stuff being dead, the dwarfs would have won!

Nice battlereport!
When I first read your list and saw younwere up against Dwarfs I thought you would get stomped against all the shooting they can have which your Dragon, Throne and Cart dont like. But it went better then Inthough it would for you even thou you lost in the end. You might have made a draw if you had played all 6 rounds?

It's annoying I can't work out how to upload pictures, but basically there was a handy watchtower building in the middle I hid behind, and with the speed of the vargheists, dire wolves and Vanhel's, his shooting was stopped quite quickly.

TBH, he is really unlucky too: in a previous fight he got 27 organ gun shots, 22 thunderer shots, AND a cannon that wounded on my zombie dragon Lord. He did one wound to the zombie dragon and my lord ward saved everything else.

Anyway, we figured that even with the brutal murdering of about 10+ dwarfs a turn, he had stubborn/unbreakable on all of his units, so I wouldn't have been able to get the points off his ironbreakers or iron drakes!

We both look forward to a rematch, except I'm going to take more troops instead of an unkillable behemoth.

From reading the batrep is doesn't sound as one sided as you say. I believe a lot of it came down to your opponent's bad targetting choices. He probably should have aimed everything at the vampire lord for the first couple of turns to try and bring it down so your army crumbled. With dwarves it is also very easy to kill the dragon he's riding since it has no save and cannon balls always hit both the rider and dragon (which would actually be a very hard thing to do but warhammer cannon operators can do it with every shot)

Nice batrep :)
I found the pictures at bugmans your brother posted, I'm not stalking I was just browsing there and remembered your report, I promise :)

Will post a link to my brother's one as he has the pictures up, but there was a handy tower I hid behind meaning his cannon had no sight. The cannon ended up blowing up turn 2, but by turn 3 the vargheists and dire wolves were into the guns anyway.

I'm perhaps a bit unfearing against shooting. There has always been one thing to hide behind, or we have so many units to use as screens, and I've always run fast lists which are I've to combat so soon there's little time to be shot at. Also, my brother's dice rolling is cursed!
