As a slightly less common basing scheme, you could go for ashlands style basing. Mainly the post volcanic landscape of the area surrounding volcanoes.
A lot of it can be based off of the same basics as snow bases, but with several differences.
First is that you need something slightly different either on its own or mixed in with the snow flock.
Charcoal Ashes actually work extremely well for it. Start with a charcoal briquet and smash it up to a gravel consistency. Burn it (I'd made a "boat" out of aluminum foil for this) until it turns nearly white in the end. Then let it cool and shift to a ziplock (or similar) bag, preferably you should double bag this and get as much of the air out as you can before sealing it in. Then crush the remains of the charcoal to a powder. Either mix it with snow flock or use it on its own.
Look at the images of Mt. St. Helens ash fields, and think about it as a terrain and basing option.
I'd based some of my dinosaurs with that and a friend made a lot of ash zombies for DnD.
