I have just started and have pained most of my army but i remain undecided on a base theme. I was originally thinking mud/swamp. Mainly from wanting my corps cart to leave tracks. However, I would like to try for a scorched earth (pumas, lava, brimstone) but not sure if that can be done well. I eventually would like to display my army on the walking dead post

hey maith, welcome to CN. If you want some info how to make some lava bases you could check these articles:

They are very helpful.

Something about painting fire:

And if you decide to follow your initial idea and make a swamp themed army, here is a very good tutorial about swamp bases:

Hope it helps ;)

As a slightly less common basing scheme, you could go for ashlands style basing. Mainly the post volcanic landscape of the area surrounding volcanoes.

A lot of it can be based off of the same basics as snow bases, but with several differences.

First is that you need something slightly different either on its own or mixed in with the snow flock.

Charcoal Ashes actually work extremely well for it. Start with a charcoal briquet and smash it up to a gravel consistency. Burn it (I'd made a "boat" out of aluminum foil for this) until it turns nearly white in the end. Then let it cool and shift to a ziplock (or similar) bag, preferably you should double bag this and get as much of the air out as you can before sealing it in. Then crush the remains of the charcoal to a powder. Either mix it with snow flock or use it on its own.

Look at the images of Mt. St. Helens ash fields, and think about it as a terrain and basing option.

I'd based some of my dinosaurs with that and a friend made a lot of ash zombies for DnD.

I do a valcano type of basing for my salamander's space marines here is one.

I used train ballast for the basing they have coal black and red gravel. I will base my dreadnought this weekend So I can get you a better shot of the base.

It looks rather nice, I'm assuming you were going for the dormant volcano look with the lava rock stuff?

For volcanic ash wastes, I would put down small slate or just rough sand, basecoat chaos black, drybrush codex gray (or a slightly darker gray)
For actual lava, theres great tutorials for that.

I finished a necromancer I'm entering into a paint competition with and i love the base, the crusted lava is great! I took a picture and I wish i they were a better quality.

I don't like how the dry brush light blue came out on his cape though, not sure what to do it just looks sloppy, more so now that I've taken a couple of pictures. Suggestions anyone?
