Hello everybody!
With the release of 8th edition I decided to jump on the fantasy bandwagon. I actually like the new rules (played 7th a little, but didn't like overpowered magic, having to take scrollcaddies and the fact that the armies/units were so small), and decided on VC even though I heard they aren't as good anymore. So, this is what I came up with:

1 vampire lord
Lord of the dead
Forbidden lore
Dark acolyte
Crown of damnation
40 pt sword (+2A/+2S)
Flayed hauberk
385

1 vampire
Battle standard bearer
Armour of destiny
MotBA
225

1 vampire
100

34 skeleton warriors
Spears, command
326

29 skeleton warriors
Command
252

19 grave guard
Banner of the barrows
GW, command
322

5 fell bats
100

10 black knights
Standard of vigour
command
295

1 varghulf
175

2180

As you can see, I have 70 pts left to spend on items for the vamps or extra models for the units. Any help is appreciated! thanks, Deathbringer

Hello, and welcome to CN :)

This looks nice, but I would drop knights, because they can't win much combats, and if 1 dies, you cannot deny ranks (that's if you run them 5 wide). So instead, you can either put Blood Knights, and they can kill a lot, and are vamps. Or maybe even better, put Black Coach and some more GG.
If you are using BSB, i think Wight King is better solution, he is cheaper , T5 and W3, plus he have KB. And i think that banner isn't so great, because fear doesn't work same... Maybe hatred banner? Or +1 to hit, and put him in GG :)

And if you drop spears on skeletons save 60 pts + about 50 pts on WK, thats 5 more GG, or 5 more Fell Bats :) Or something.
Spears won't make much difference. several attacks at W2 S3 I2 are not going to kill much. And if you have hand weapon and shield then you have 6+ ward (I think parry is 6+), and that is much more helpful to keep casualties to min, and let vamps do the damage, or some flanking unit.

Other than that, this look good to me, lots of infantry but only 1 varghulf (i would use 2, and maybe BC), for flanking and hunting smaller units and machines.

edit: also if BSB uses magical banner he cannot use any other magical equipment, so eather standard, or armor in your case.

1 vampire lord
Lord ot dead, dark acolyte, forbidden lore (light or vampire?)
100 pt of items(was thinking about: ogre blade, HA w/ 4+ WS and e.shield, but I don't know if this is possible with the new itemlist)
385

That setup is unfortunately not legal for a Lord since he's carrying two pieces of magical armour, both the Armour of Destiny and the Enchanted Shield. A character is only allowed a single item from every category~

I think I'd go for the Lore of Vampires with your Lord. While the new rulebook Lores have received an immense increase in power I feel that the spells that were made specifically for our army still works the best. In fact, it's even better now that they've been made so much easier to cast. :)

DOH!

Well that's annoying:thumbsdown:. In that case I'm stuck on what to equip my characters with... I'm now aiming for the list below. Can anybody help me with equipment/combo's etc?

As to the WK: I prefer the vampire because of its spellcasting and the special rule, although survivability is reason for concern. I now gave it the MotBA, because its compatible with the BSB. Should I go for protection instead?

As to the BK: I want to convert black knights out of brets+GG, and I think a big unit would look awesome. Also, blood knights only have 1W, so this unit will last longer, and gets to fight in two ranks in 8th (correct?)

As to the Varghulf: I would like to add a second one, but am currently stuck on pts.

1 vampire lord
Lord of the dead
Forbidden lore
Dark acolyte
100 pt items
385

1 vampire
BSB: Barrow banner
MotBA
220

1 vampire
Lord of the dead
Flayed hauberk
Black periapt
155

34 skeleton warriors
Spears, command
326

29 skeleton warriors
Command
252

24 grave guard
GW, command
342

5 fell bats
100

10 black knights
Standard of vigour
command
295

1 varghulf
175

2250

Thanks for all the help so far! keep it coming. Deathbringer

I'd definately recommend against going with a BSB without any protection. He'll drop dead very quickly once your opponent finds out how influential he is. I'd hand his banner over to the Grave Guard unit (he's joining them, isn't he?) and try to free up some point for some protection for him. The 2+ suit of armour from the common item list might be worth a shot, although you'd need to free up a significant amount of points for that. I'd look into dropping a few Skeletons in order to fit it in.

And yes, those Black Knights will indeed get to strike in two ranks, although only the riders can do that. I can't really see much of a redeeming feature for our Black Knight cavalry yet unfortunately, but then again I haven't really given them a fair chance to impress me yet. I suggest you keep them like they are and give them a few tries on the battlefield. I'd like to hear some feedback on that, myself. :)

I agree with MasterSpark's previous comments. I would also question upping the GG count to 24. You'll be running them 5x5 with the vamp? That's an added cost that may not give you much in return.

Assuming your dice pool is averaging 7-8 PD a turn (if you drop MotBA), you have three casters to split that total over. Exchanging one vamp for a WK won't hurt your magic phase too much. If you toss him in the larger Skel unit as your BSB (w/ War Banner?) you'd be improving the unit's CR greatly (he'll actually wound enemies!) and with a large unit you should be able to break steadfast quicker.

Ok thanks! So I made a few changes to the top list in the topic:
- I gave the lord, flayed hauberk, crown of domination and a 40pt sword (+2S or +2A?). Is this a good/legal setup?
- I gave the BSB the armour of destiny and gave the barrow banner to the GG. I still prefer vampires over WK, so I hope that's not a problem
- I still need to equip the last vampire with the leftover pts (which I got from scrapping some GG)

One other thing, I read somewhere that flying units now move 10" and march 20". Is this true? In that case fell bats will be as usefull for warmachine/mage hunting as a leaking bucket full of donkeydung , because they need to be close to a vamp.

Hope somebody can clarify this! Deathbringer

PS: the FAQ's for every army are available at the GW-site

Yeah, Flying units now move 10, march 20. So those Bats are probably not marching after the first turn.

I will echo the others comments... the BSB should be a Wight Lord. Tougher model, cheaper point cost, easier to heal with IoN, the Vampire doesn't generate PD/DD anymore (well only 16% of the time), list goes on and on!

How about i ditch the fell bats and add a WK w/ sword of kings and nightshroud and add him to the unit, so he can accept challenges to protect the BSB, and dish out some hurting with the 5+KB with re-roll?
I changed the top list a bit.. please tell me if this is an improvement! (I only have like 4 units + varghulf...) Thanks, deathbringer
