So up until now I've only really played 1 game (750pts) against my buddies Dark Elves. This weekend I'm going over to another friends house to really play my army to the fullest 2000(ish) points, give or take.

This friend plays Ogres and I'm just wanting to know what to look out for, what to kill first and just in general how to combat them with my dead soldiers.

The army I'm using will comprise of the following models. This will give you and idea of what I'm working with.

1 Vampire on foot (Konrad model)
1 Mounted Vampire
1 Strigoi Ghoul King
1 Necromancer

50 strong Skeletons with Spears and full command
40 strong Zombies
30 strong Ghouls with Ghast

2x Corpse Carts

10 Black Knights with Lances and Full Command

1 Terrorgheist
1 Mortis Engine

So that's what I have to draw from as far as an army goes. Any and all advice would be great for this new lord of the undead! :konrad:

Well with all those casters HellHeart is gonna suck. Even more so if you have ME w/tome. Having to roll twice on miscast table for each caster in range is not good. This cost me a game in a tournament where he popped HH and both my vamp general AND lv4 necro were cascaded!!! Also the Gut Star sucks. The only thing we really have against that is Purple Sun. If he takes a balanced ogre list you should have no problem.
Your Ghouls combined with CC will work nicely againt ogres as they dont have a very good save and rerolling poisoned attacks is awesome. If he takes Ironblaster try to scream that off the table or magic it early so that your TG can survive. I would recommend as your next purchase is some chaff life fellbats, dogs or spirit hosts they are essential. Hope you do well, good luck!

Watch out for MF cav. They can and will plow through a unit of 30-40 zombies/skeletons in a turn if they get the charge. A unit of 4 will put out 4d3 S5 impact hits, 16 S5 hits and 12 S4 hits and 4 S5 stomps. And if they have a dragon hide banner (mine never leave home without it) in there they will get to re-roll ALL 1s on the turn they charge. And it comes with a S3 breath weapon that causes the unit hit to have ASL next turn. And the BW attacks are magical. So if you try to hold up the unit with a ethereal unit make sure it is NOT touching the standard bearer. Watch out if he runs a bus. In combat you will be facing a T5 wall of hard to hit characters with good saves and his R&F protected. If he plays with maneaters watch out for snipers with poison. He may try and snipe your lower level characters right out of their units.

Midean brings up a lot of good points. Ogres have nasty nasty tricks up their sleeves (they'll end up being my third army hahaha). Their leadership isn't so great though, so they can be vulnerable to a few screams here and there.

MF Cavalry can be devastated by a terrorgheist hiding outside their front charge arc, similarly, any unit they can catch and charge can be equally devastated (To me MF Cav are really strong for their points).

If he runs an iron gut star, he will definitely put heroes or lords in it, which is good and bad: he will have a lot of eggs in that basket, and you could potentially wither it down from afar, or tie it up with chaff for as many turns as possible- the rest of the army can be dealt with as a result.

Other things to watch out for are the Iron Blaster (just like any cannon), it needs to be dealt with quickly. Sabertusks can prove to be really good chaff also. Keep them away from your BK bus or he could tie you up instead all game.

I'm in the middle of introducing a new O.K player to the game now, and he had 6 Ironguts w Dragonhide Banner and a Tyrnat with Ogre Blade Charge (just the average 1 Impact Hit pr model mind you) a unit of 60 Zombies, and he wiped them all out on the charge. Needless to say, for his first game, he was pretty impressed with the Ogres...

With no redirectors you will probably get mowed down. The cheapest option you have would be to convert some spirit hosts out of spare parts. There are alot of examples on this forum of how to do that well.
Konrad will be a big help too.I like to run a unit of batswarms when I bring Konrad..to insure that he swings first.

Huzzah! Victory! So we played the dawn attack mission where it's the random deployment and I rolled fairly well for deployment, mostly on the center and right flank while his cannon (Chariot Cannon thing, forgot name) Ended up on the far left flank and really could only shoot at skeletons.

Terrorgheist was definitely the MVP, screaming down his general (slaughter master?) and his unit by turn three, and then getting in behind the (scrap thrower?) and screaming it, and then screaming the last of the lead belchers down.

I ran a Level 2 Necro and 2 Vampires (1 on foot leading the Skeleton horde, and 1 on Nightmare with Black Knights)

The Necro deployed in a tower with 10 zombies as retinue while the 30 mob of zombies, corpse cart, and 30 ghouls moved up towards the lead belchers and scrap thrower. The Zombies and corpse cart took the most fire as the ghouls had already gotten into CC with a (Hunter?) and two saber tooths. Vigour Mortis really played well in my favour with 20 poison attacks at ASF. They wiped the mob and ended up running into the lead belchers where they would stay tied up the rest of the game. Zombies really just played meat shields fire his shooting.

I tried running the fear bomb on the skeletons with a Vampire with Aura of Dark majesty but it didn't work as his (iron guts?) had fear as well which cancels each other out. The Vampire in that unit got curb stopped early on and the only thing that held that skeleton unit up was the Mortis Engine throwing up regeneration.

The Mortis Engine in general didn't do a whole lot as the only caster close by (the Vampire in the skeleton unit) got squashed early on) and ended up eating a cannon round turn 3 or 4.

The Black Knights and the Mounted Vampire did fantastic, wiping a unit of ogres with a (fire belly?) and then getting around and flanking the cannon thing. They then came around the back and helped the ghouls and Terrorgheist finish off the last of the lead belchers, tabling the Ogre player turn 5.

All in all, a really fun game.

Congratulations! Always happy to hear the dead do well. How big were his units?

Thanks!

Uhhh, like between 6-9 ogres per unit I believe. Yeah because the Iron Guts were 3x2, the Slaughter master and Fire belly units were 3x3 and the Lead Belchers were like 4x2.
