Greetings fellow bloodsuckers!

I have come to relate to you the epic (somewhat) tale of my first victory under the banner of the dead legions!

This was a casual game of roughly 1200 points where I was pitted against s much more experienced Skaven player. He chose to field this:

A grey seer
He was a level four wizard, but that is all I know about him!

A chieftain

A plague monk hero with a plague censer

A BSB carrying rat

Two units of 25 clan rats

17 plague monks with the hero within their ranks.

Two rat ogres with handlers

A unit of two eat swarms

6 giant rats

The list I chose to field consisted of 3 units and two characters, in contrast to his 6 units and 4 characters!

Vampire lord
Red fury
Avatar of death
Infinite hatred
Ogre blade
Crown of the damned
Extra level

Wight king
Bsb
Sword of kings
Dragon helm

30 grave guard
Great weapons
Full command
King is in here

Two units of twenty skeletons
Full command
Spears
Lord is in one of these units

We deployed across a table from one another and rolled off for the first turn.
I rolled a 6, he rolled a 5. That was the start of my good fortunes, because i skipped the movement phase and went straight for magic where I rolled a total of 11. With such a large pool I decided to cast some hitty spells first (I'd randomly gotten Vanhel's summon undead horde and wind of undeath). I cast wind of undeath with five dice and rolled around a 23, after explaining to my opponent the effects of the spell he threw all of his dice at it and promptly dispelled it.

I was a little miffed at this at first, but then realized I could cast with impunity, so I did and cast undead horde to boost the both of my skeleton units up to 26 models and ended my turn.

His first turn was pretty predictable, he moved up cautiously and manouvered his rat swarms and giant rats in the direction of the grave guard, hoping to keep them out of the battle for as long as possible. His plague monks closed in on my lords unit, which i didn't understand because he should have known how deadly my vampire would be, he charged my lord with the monks. The other two blocks and the ogres headed to my right flank.

During his magic phase he cast skitter jump on his chief and sent he to the rear of my lords unit hoping to get some easy kills, but he realized he couldnt charge that turn. Next he cast plague upon my lord's unit, it ended up killing about 9 skeletons which seemed horrendous for only a 12+ cast, but he rolled a 1 after it hit so I was able to end the spell.

In combat my lord went first and challenged the hero, who refused. He then attacked normally and hit with 3 out of his 4 attacks, and all 3 wounded. The 3 redfury attacks also went off and he killed another 3, essentially decimating the first rank. The rats went next and only killed 3 skeletons, who struck back claiming two monks. The rat swarms had hit the GG flank and my WK had made way to them, he was unable to get a killing blow off and the swarms were dealt 2 wounds , 1 GG fell to them.

I didn't move again since I wanted the spear bonus.

In magic I got 9 dice, and cast summon undead horde again to boost my skeletons. I also got the one GG back. I ended up casting the spell with IF and took a magical feedback wound, it also drained my pool.

In combat my lord dealt 8 wounds and wiped the unit entirely. The chief saw this bloodbath and so fled off the table edge

The GG succeeded in destroying a base of rats but the last one had two wounds left.

On his next turn my second skele unit was charged by ogres and a unit of clan rats. They took minimal casualties, and actually won the combat against the clan rats. Who'd been crippled by fear and only didn't flee due to their Bsb. He cast plague again upon my lord's unit dealing similar casualties but failing to destroy them, the spell failed to continue.

I moved my lord onto the flank of the ogre unit, and prepared to releive the embattled skeletons with a charge.
In magic I attempted a Vanhel's upon my skeletons but it was dispelled so I simply replenished them.

My lord killed both of the ogres and the handlers and the skeletons were able to hold their own. My GG FINALLY broke free from the rat swarms.

He charged my GG with his giant rats. He cast plague again and this time it backfired killing a few of his rats and some skeletons. The giant rats were annihilated by the GG horde's huge number of attacks, and his clan rats were beginning to lose their wind.

On the final turn my GG charged his second clan rat unit with the grey seer in it, and my second skele unit as well as my lord got simultaneous flank charges on his engaged block. Both blocks were wiped out by his turns start and his grey seer skitter leaped away. We called it in my favor.

Overall it was a very fun game with a lot of scary spells going awry or too well. His magic really worried me for a bit because if he'd rolled well ever all my units wouldve been sorely wounded by plague. I rolled really well in my own magic phase, but my armor saves were garbage, my GG failed every single one against the swarms.

I hope this is an omen for the future!

Hey,sounds like a good game and a win for the undead lords :) skaven can be a pain but you handled them well although I'd say your opponent made some mistakes,Ie telpeorting his chief lol, congrats dude :)

Although I'd like to point oh that in a 1200ish pts game your lord was waaaay over his points allowance, remember now in 8th ed you can only spend 25% of you points total on lords at 1200 it's only 300pts :) I've struggled finding a lord build I like at such low points cost :)

Anyway congrats again :) hope more victories follow

Yeah when I said it was a casual game I meant that we didn't bother with points allowances as long as the army totals were fine. :)
It does seem like it woulda made it a bit easier for him to win, but I think the overall result would have been the same if less crushingly in my favor.

I think his biggest mistake was not running larger blocks, he coulda dropped the chief and combined the clan rats which would have been far more troublesome. Also if he'd directed his lord and strongest unit away from a lord built to eat them that wouldve been useful :konrad:

i thought it was an intriguing game very good though and I'm glad to see a few of those smelly rats dead.

as my last game against the skaven was rather attrocius lol

That's embarrassing...

We both made so many mistakes it was quite amusing.
On two turns we both forgot to declare charges because we are used to playing 40K where you charge after everything else! :)

I'm planning on having another game next week against an empire opponent who is far more savvy when it comes to other armies so I'll have to be on point, he's making a shock and awe list with 0 magic but lots if war machines and many many units of Kinghtly Orders :( it'll be interesting to say the least.

well ferrum my friend i love my empire amry lol.
and tbh empire cav and machines is a very nasty combo when they charge with static 11 combat res and smash a few corpse about and high lvl of dmg to lightly armoured undead that have been smashed around by empire artillery i can guarantee you a bad day unless ofc his war machines miss or explode and his knights flop around like useless fish it does sometimes happen.

but pls write it up for me as i would like to see how it goes could be very interesting or one sided to either player :)

The only thing I'll have on my side is lore of metal and lots and lots of bodies! We'll see if that's enough :)

I'll certainly write a battle report and also a little piece of fiction describing the battle and it's background!

Thanks for the replies!

tell ya what bud ill send you my battle rep on my empire dwarf fight maybe give you some tricks to use put a list up as well bud then we can see what your going with against them as well as how to stave off hideous empire fire power lol
