IF you vampire general is mounted on a monster, aka vargheist or zombie dragon. Your leadership range increases to 18". My question is, can you march with troops from 18" away if he is mounted as such? This is not specifically mentioned in the new army book. Is it 12" no matter what? or does the monster mount allow you to extend your march bubble?

Thanks for the replies, I bet a few people have run into this already.

If it is not specially mentioned and does not reference Inspiring Presence, then I would say it is set to 12"

Think of it this way, it has nothing do do with the Undead actually seeing the vamp which is the fluff behind Inspiring Presence, but how far the generals magical aura affects things.

What DoN said.
It's pretty clearly a stand-alone rule not connected to Inspiring Presence, so a fixed 12" for marching bubble.

When is the 12" aura messured?

No where in the book does it say if it's in the beginning of the phase or not.

I can se some people marching with all their stuff within 12" of their general, then moving the general to some new position to again march with other units that will now be within the 12" bubble....

This sounds kind of wrong..

sounds like it is suposed to be our Achiles tendon. I do think that if a player has the nuts to put his general on a large target that he should have to right to march with people within 18" That does make Vargheists a little better than they should be, because their frenzy test is effected by the 18" inspiring presnece of the general?

What do you guys think? Possible oversight by GW or was this a purposeful balancing act?

I think our book is a step above all other books :konrad: in 8th edition (skaven are still very very dangerous), "synergy" wise I'm impressed with our book/magic lore/ lord choice flexibility. They have made VC core worth using as something other than a bunker, Success!

I always treated it as wherever he is when the unit moves, so if you have some Ghouls beside him and some wolves ahead of him(but out of range of the march bubble): march the ghouls, move him, then if the wolves are in range they can march. But if he had some skellies also beside him at the start of the turn but he moved and they were outside of 12" afterwards then they're walkin'.

This.

Doesn't say when, so whenever.

If I remember right this was FAQ'ed in the last edition because people were moving their vamps around to do the same thing. Don't have it anymore to check. I believe they said you measured at the start of the movement phase to prevent this very tactic...... If it needs to be again I'm sure they will come up with the same reading....

Might have been in 6th, but not in 7th to my knowledge. Had an opponent try to call me on that tactic. It was in a tourney so she pulled in a TO and after ~15-20 min of searching BrB and FAQ's they gave up. We may have just missed the rule but I doubt it.

On the same lines.... it now says that a unit with the undead special rule cannot make march unless within 12" of the general or have the vampiric special rule. Does this mean that charicters such as a necromancer or wraith cannot make march moves on their own, charicters being units on their own?
Can a necromancer now be the general? On page 26 it states "Your army's general must be a wizard. If he is able to choose a spell lore, he must use the lore of vampires."
And if both these statements are true can HE make march moves? Any thoughts?

thanx, I suspected this was the case but it's good to hear from others, you really have to put aside assumptions and forget completely the old book and look at this new book with new eyes. But I love Necromancers and am completely thrilled they finally get thier dues. Master necro on abyssal terror; the conversion possiblilitys are endless! never mind the game play.

I'd treat it like the Tyranid Synapses rules, which state in the FAQ:

Q: Do units who begin their turn more than 12” from any
Synapse Creature have to test for Instinctive Behaviour if
a Synapse Creature arrives from reserve within 12” at the
beginning of the Movement phase? (p33)
A: Yes – the model has begun its Movement phase
outside of synapse range

I think going to a FAQ for a different game, far less a different army is taking it a little far. Especially as the rules are not even the same circumstance. It seems clear enough that you can only march if you're within range of your general, moves are done in turn so I don't see any reason you couldn't move your General around to encourage more marching.

It has its benefits and downsides... if you charge your general you can easily take him away and your other units become unable to march... Rule says you can march if within 12" of general so thats what I would assume...

IIRC, it used to be checked at the start of the movement phase.

Sadly, I still haven't got the new book yet. However, if it's missing a "when" to check, it will be FAQ'd.

Another question, can you make your vampire hero on a coven throne the BSB?

No, the army books options for hero lvl vampire mounts are limited to nightmare or abyssal terror (AT might be interesting to run :perv:.)

Looked it up in the army book vamp hero can take a barded nightmare a hellsteed and a throne.

So from that I conclude that you can indeed make your thrall on a throne the BSB
