Quite a lot of thinking done here on this army - I really like it when all the minis have some story to them and are not only entries with numbers on the army list.
I must say, I am quite intrigued with the ghoul captains - how do you make them? Especially their heads. They exquisite :)
Also, the idea of removing body parts from Nagash as he's loosing wounds - hilariously awesome, awesomely hilarious xD Keep up the good work.

It's been a looong time since I last updated. I think everyone knows the feeling when you are so busy and so stressed that you hardly check internets fun parts anymore. This is such a lovely forum with great members that I feel a little bit ashamed for not having checked in for a while :(.

@Farmer7574 I know right! I got the same feeling when I stumbled upon it in the bitzbox.

@Dragonet Thx, living solitary in a clock tower would make anyone crazy I think ;).

@Mad 'At When considering hats I find that your opinion might be bias ;).

@Borgnine Well thank you! The ghoul captains are in fact heavily converted Bloodletters mixed with a bit of empire bitz. Can't really remember but I think the heads are bloodletter heads with the "muzzles" being the lower part of an empire knight helmet.
For the record the Nagash conversion worked really well in actual combat last week as when he got hit by a cannonball I removed his arms and shoulder pads and placed them on his base. Gradually they all grew back ;).

I got a bit of work done on the army yesterday!
I was involved in a rather large battle the other day and after summoning more ghouls than I had models I noticed that I have both the old edition ghouls and the new ones. Needless to say it started to nag at my mind because they look so different. Selling the models was out of the question since the coming of AoS has left the second marked prices in such a state that I could've just given them away.

This resulted in the making if a new unit, The Crypt Guard (Ghoul Guard? We'll in fact Tomb Guard). I'm not very fond of the idea of spending to much money on a unit I'll rarely use either so a simple conversion work with the old models and the bitzbox would have to be sufficient.

It's not the most beautiful conversion work in my days but it do help separating the old ghoul models from the new. So far I always play GG and so there was no reason to get some TG until now. The look of the unit is also partly because the character of the models themselves isn't the most esthetic.

A ghoul captain sometimes gather the strongest of the tribes to form into an "elite" unit. They are trained to better utilize their strength, better fed than other of their kin and are given looted weapons and armor scraps of the best quality that can be found. Some wear ragged cloaks or pelts to show their status. By default the training removes some of their savage nature and your average ghouls ferocity. It is traded for greater strength and a more disciplined battle temper. The Crypt Guard also coat their weapons in their own blood everyday until the edge becomes so poisonous it can kill a man with the smallest cut.

As you notice, the Ghouls weaponry is very varied. This is quite intentional as it's basically looted stuff or homemade. The standard is made from some unlucky cannon crews rammer.

As I said it's not the best conversion work I've done but who knows? With some paint and if they perform well in a few games they might grow on me :).

Time for a new update on the plog!
The Crypt Guard regiment is all but finished. At the moment I'm out of basing material but otherwise they're pretty much finished. I'll probably do a few last finishing touches before the week is out but I couldn't wait to post an update ;).

@Farmer7574 I also liked the darker gray skin on these models but instead decided to go with a more regular wane ghoul skin color. Since my regular ghouls, Ghoul Preacher, Ghoul Captain and Ghoul General all share roughly the same skin color I feel it helps tie the Crypt Guard with the rest of their kin if they match.

@Dragonet Sir, don't post things like that since a man could be inclined to spend a lot of money tracking down old OOP models for the sake of completion ;).

Ah, the Collectors' Curse: Lore of the Hobbyist, CV 9+: "The slightest insinuation of an incomplete 3rd Edition ready army painted with the original set of Citadel Colours will send a devoted hobbyist into OCD-like paroxysms." If cast successfully the target suffers 6D20 wounds to the wallet as s/he desperately scours eBay for the requisite parts to complete their collection.

Using "living" horses is a good idea, I think it makes it look more ancient (altho I understand that's pretty odd statement, and I certainly understand if some of you disagree with me :D)
Where's the flag from? I personally would add scythes on wheels and a spear in front of the chariot, but still, that chariot is very cool!

Oh okay, I didn't know they don't have access to scythed wheels :D The flagellant kit has probably a lot of useful parts for any undead army, maybe I should buy one :D
Well I would paint the horses ethereal (no matter which color) :D But I have a thing with ethereal-tone so I don't know how'd you like it. Or maybe if you're going to add other cavalry in your army (with non-skeletal steeds), plan about how you would paint them and follow the scheme through your chariots too.

Btw, your Nagash is beautiful, maybe some day I'll get my own

@Sessioni it's great kit! Work's wonder with human armies to since kit bashing can create a ver veteran looking unit ;).
Hmm, I'll try a few different ones for the horses and then we'll see. Ethereal is a good suggestion. I get the feeling that the more simple the paint job the more it will add to the overall effect.

Thank you kindly! Definitely the best miniature I ever bought (The Green Knight excluded) so I think you should give it a go!

I was also gunna suggest ghost horses, because my Necrarchs lend themselves to ghosty stuff scattered throughout the army. Some of my remaining Ghouls/other infantry is even gunna be ethereal just to hammer home the Haunted Army look.

Cool chariot you have there! I find it kinda funny that the wheels almost fall off the base.. "drive straighter skelebro, or you will kill us both!"

I see there's an old skeleton shield, but how did you do the rest of the wheel?
Also, this mask on one of the ghouls is literally and figuratively golden! You did fine work on making them more interesting

Soon I'll have the first chariot painted! It's taking longer than excepted but I'll get there! Eventually!
@Adam_Barrow Etheral horses might work! I'm going to try it with the first chariot. I'm also going to try a completely black and metallic theme on the second before I decide.

@Borgnine haha! Who said driving undead chariot should be without risks? ;)
In response to your question I'm going to go full overboard and provide a small step-by-step guide in chariot construction! I've never done such a guide before and I feel
it's something every hobbyist should at least try once ;).

Building a miniature from scratch is very fun and as of now, I'm not spending a single penny on GW products. This guide is not so much about telling others how to do their stuff as much as it is for me to try making a step-by-step guide for the first time! There are so many skilled hobbyists around this forum that I almost feel bad about posting it but hopefully you now understand my reasons :).

So, how to build your own undead chariot step-by-step:

First of, the main body. You need some stiff paper (cardboard is to thick) and some light wood. I've used a corn flakes package (tea or candy sometimes have similar packages) and an ice cream stick. I guess that balsa wood and plasticard would be better alternatives but the material I'm using can often be found in any household! I'm not trying to encourage anyone to eat ice cream but once in a while after having one just save the stick ;).

It shouldn't be hard to cut a chariot body of the right size so long as you have an infantry or something to make it fit. Glue the paper together to form the base and I also used some paper tape to stabilize.
Then cut (a scissor works) the stick into pieces roughly the height of the chassis. It doesn't matter if the pieces are uneven as it only reinforce the image of a rough chariot. Just look at the Orcs and Beastmen ;).
The pieces are cut into smaller pieces resembling "planks" that can be glued, using wood glue, to the outside if the basic chassis. It should resemble something like this:

Second, the base. Very easy, just find some suitable steeds of your own choice and either use a GW 50x100 base or a custom made as I've done.
1E27EF8D-6C15-40AC-A4BA-0E044E0A45F0_zps9otckicx.webp

I glued together a 25x50 base with a leftover 50x75 base onto a piece of stiff paper making it into a 50x100 base. This is because if you try to glue the bases together without something under there is a risk that the base will be unstable as it may not be parallel with the flat surface of the gaming board. When the model is finished and ready to base it is fairly easy to cover up the "crevice" made from this technique. As you can se there is a small stripe of plastic connecting the steeds. The stripe was cut from a butter package and it is as strong as regular plastic but very bendable, making it good for this type of detail. I guess a shampoo bottle could have the same bendable plastic for those not using butter in plastic package ;).

Thirdly, the wheels (this ones for you @Borgnine ;))
Once again I used cut out stripes of bendable plastic from household packages. Combined with some metal wire, round miniature shields, some suitable buttons from a coat or the like (they are usually super cheap at second hand store but shouldn't be to expensive at a regular store either) just make sure the buttons match the size you want for your wheels. Last, a wooden grill stick (toothpick could work but I felt it was a bit small) cut after roughly the width of the chariots main body but a little longer so the ends stick a bit outside.

This stage is where I made a mistake in making the arm to wide so it looks like the chariot is balancing on the edges of the base :(.
The wire go through the holes in the buttons and is twisted around the stick. It gives good stability and allows the possibility to slightly adjust the wheels up to the point when it's time to glue. Glue the plastic stripes around the edge of the buttons. When the shields are attached it will look very much like an actual wheel.

Fourth step. Use the rest of the grill stick to form pieces like in the picture. The smaller ones are attached under the main chariot body in the front with some space in between so the main arm better attaches between the steeds and the chariot.

Fifth part. Use bitz like shields or skulls to decorate the chariot. This time I also added a horn to represent the musician in the chariot unit. Any type of undead crew will suffice.

The finished chariot! These were very fun to make, crazy cheap and a good way to "recycle" junk lying around the house! ;)
