the other day I sold my Loyalist Space Marine Minis along with my 3 duplicates of the power claw weilding warboss, (yes I bought Assault on Black Reach multiple times I needed the-easy-to-put-together-Ork-Boyz) and after much debating I decided to try my hand at Necrons. I got the codex, a Necron Lord and two Boxes of Necron Warriors so a basic force, but Now I'm stumped on where to go next. I was thinking a unit of Immortals and Flayed Ones for more shooty and rippy, But every one says I should get a Monolith apperently Necrons can't function without one, but I'm not sold on it a Monolith is a centerpeice not a starting point. Whats everyone else think.

I would get in practice with just the basic force you have right now before deciding on your next purchases.

My starting list was just going to be a lord with res orb and two warrior squads at 500 points then a unit of immortals and two tomb spyders to reach 750 points then I would have possibly included flayed ones or got another squad or warriors or two or possibly something else entirely to reach 1,000.

I don't think I would include a monolith until 1,500 or higher but that's just me personally and I really don't see any necron lists that forgo taking a monolith at higher point values.

Edit: Forgot 1,000 point value in a follow up sentence.

Well, a nice 1000pts list I use which I have found to be pretty competitive is this:

Lord w/ Rezorb

Deceiver

20 Warriors (two squads of ten)

3 Scarab Swarms (objective contesters on last turn turbo-boost)

3 Desttroyers

996pts

Essentially, get Destroyers. They are horrifically insane, without doubt one of the best (if not THE best) unit in the dex. Fast, tough, long-range high-strength pretty low-AP mutiple-shot weapons. They tick all the boxes! Get yourself three of those fellas.

Immortals can do ok when there's ten of them combined with a Lord with Veil of Darkness; you just deep strike around the map and blast things to pieces using your assault weapons at max range to avoid harm.

Flayed Ones... they're not that great. If you really like the models or something, do it, but they are a little bit rubbish on the battlefield.

Only other unit I would personally consider right now would be 5 Destroyers.

There are ALOT of rummors surrounding the Necrons and their (likely) up-coming re-release soon'ish! The bulk of the 'shiny new plastic kits' rummors hint very heavily at Immortals being the big infantry re-do. Destroyers have also been mentioned as a new combo-box that will give you 1 model which can be built with various options... Rest of the model rummors are all over the place, but expect 1-2 brand new units. A re-done Flayed One or Pariah kit as a finecast also isn't totally out of the question either.

The rules are even more insane! Basically, think a 'Dark Eldar' style release here...
By the end of Novemeber, you should hopefully be a very happy Necrontyr Lord!:innocent:

Cheers!

That is one of the rumours, Sanai. Although I've never been particularly impressed by the Tomb Spyders abilities.

I much prefer a Monolith Wall, minimum Warriors, the Deceiver, and then a load of Wraiths with a Destroyer Lord. If you win with a close-combat Necron army, then you really are humiliating your opponent. xD

Warriors unfortunately are pretty rubbish. They can't really do much well except for holding objectives. I don't even use them for that, I take minimum and run an assault list. (But then I'm crazy!) xD

Basically, it uses a C'tan, lots of wraiths, a destroyer lord, and maybe flayed ones + minimum warriors.

Darvy, yes warriors are not that good: try Planetstrike (as attacker) or Spearhead, as there is no minimum troops requirement for either. It worked fine for me!
