Well, since bigcannon is busy i did some research elsewhere and found this guide http://handcannononline.com/blog/2011/08/05/tutorial-advanced-object-source-lighting/

The technique is called object source lighting or OSL

The three painted models were really amazing. The source lighting on the wight king his base really made him a standout. The necromancer is a fantastic paint all around. The muted palette choice sets an appropriate mood for the piece and the skin plays well with the reds in the robe. I'm especially jealous of the paint on his gnarled old staff.
