Dracula is always good. 'I Am Legend' by Richard Matheson published 1954 is a good vampire book though quite different to what you might expect (has had several movies based on it).

Ravenloft (D&D) books are good for younger readers (i.e. teenagers) I, Strahd and Vampire of the Mists are 2 books in this series with vampires though there are other books based on werewolves, zombies and various other creatures also in the series.

Look into Jasper Kent's series, it's got Russian history and vampires, what's not to love? xD I've only finished the first entry, Twelve, and just started the second(I think the third is out too). It's set in 19th century Russia, during Napoleon's invasion. The vampires are well done, not too over the top, there's a little romance, and what I thought was a fantastic twist at the end.

May I humbly recommend Bloodsucking Fiends, by Christopher Moore. I sent a copy to a girl I was talking to online for a couple of months for her birthday. We've now been married for ten years.

Nothing like a little romance.

No one has mentioned I am legend yet, I am surprised. I'd definitely recommended it, way way better than the awful film

Dracula is a must, and I must agree on the anno Dracula books by Kim Newman, very very good.

Anita Blake I'm a little meh on, love the first few books til it turns into Anita fucks everybody, and it became a bit boring after that. Edward the assassin was cool though.

I like the Kelly Armstrong books, but prefer the series she is writing about the EX cop turned hitwoman.

There must be more, I just can't think of them atm, I will think more....
*edit* just spotted there are two pages of replies, so ignore my comment about no I am legend. This is what happens when I stay up til midnight wargaming!*

I love the book, it combines two of my favourite things, post apocalyptic setting and vampires. Its just such a shame the will smith movie was such a let down. Even have the graphic novel, but the art in it is somewhat weird/harsh.

I'll throw in some favorites of mine here as well.

Salem's lot by Stephen King. King is king. Scary book that made me a Stephen King fan.

The passage by Justin Cronin. A unique, cool take on vampires in present-day USA. Very thrilling.

Let the right one in by John Ajvide Lindqvist. Definitively not the warhammer kind of vampires, it's essentially a bullying story set in a swedish suburb in the 70s or 80s. I've only read the swedish original so I don't know how the translation is, but the original is one of the best books I've read. He has written other books about zombies and ghosts as well, they are all great.

Sorry I haven't popped on here to say thanks to everyone for giving their recommendations. I started 2 new jobs, and start a 3rd one tomorrow, so I've been working like a crazy person and haven't been able to do as much reading as I'd like to. But please feel free to add any more books/authors to the list.
