Well, drew this list up last night, to represent the Waldenhof army, defending the northern areas of Sylvania (as per my fluff). Went with something new (for me) in massive units designed to take a charge, and never die (lol). Characters came out a bit more expensive than I wanted, as did the Core choices, but it seems pretty solid.

Deployment with sit with the Grave Guard in the centre, flanked by the two skeleton units, with their flanks guarded by corpse cart/coach/varghulf. Not sure on the wolves just yet, but always wanted to use them - maybe a deterrent?

Anyway, the list:

Characters
Viktor von Carstein, Lord of Waldenhof
Vampire Lord on Nightmare
Extra Level, Dark Acolyte, Walking Death, Lord of the Dead, Infinate Hatred, Sword of Might, Sceptre de Noirot, Walachs Bloody Hauberk

455pts.

Lady Sophia sur Lac von Carstein, Daughter-in-Darkness of Viktor.
Vampire, Dark Acolyte, Lord of the Dead, Sword of Might, Nightshroud, Talisman of Protection

195pts

Erik von Carstein, Son-in-Darkness of Viktor.
Vampire, Dark Acolyte, Lord of the Dead, Flayed Hauberk, Sword of Might

185pts

Kahn, Captain of the Waldenhof Guard
Wight King, Battle Standard, Waldenhof (as Drackenhof) Standard

225pts

Total: 2967pts
Character Total: 1060pts
Core Total: 878pts
Special Total: 654pts
Rare Total: 375pts

This list gives 10 power dice a turn, and six dispel. Assuming optimum cast each turn, and rolling a 6, I can potentially increase the size of the skeletons by 60 a turn.

Plan is to take the hits, as enemy shooting, magic etc won't matter 35 strong units, and then ressurect any I need to, before smashing into combat with them.

There will be a Vamp in each Skeleton unit, unless I put Sophia in the Grave Guard, and the BSB sill sit in the middle of the GG unit as well. Vampire Lord and cavalry on one side, with the coach on the other. Corpse Cart possible between a big unit.

Varghulf might be given free reign to engage war machines, etc.

As for additional models, I'm not a fan of ghouls, as its designed like an official State army, much like the empire, rather than a horde of all kinds. Same goes for Necromancers.

So, are my big dead units feasable as an effective army? Will they be useful, or am I better making them smaller and taking some other harder units?

I am facing a 3k High Elf army on monday, not too worried about them ASF'ing, as a, I can do it with some of mine, and b, who cares if half a dozen skeletons die when I can potentially raise 60 a turn, increasing beyond the 35 starting number?

Thanks in advance :D

RE: New VC, 3k points, Waldenhof Army

You need to remove the points cost before the mods notice!

Also I've noticed you've duplicated some magic tems (Sword of Might). Even though they say they are Common magic items it means they are common to every race, you still are limited to 1 per army so that needs readdressing.

Personally I think it looks pretty good, big units is always good for auto breaking, though you might have a problem might be defending the skeletons flanks.

I thought it was ok for total points, although the coach/varhulf might be a problem. Will edit ones like that out.

Was pretty certain you could... although, thinking about it, that might be scrolls only.... damn, back to the drawing board. Pity the Vamp magic weapons are so, naff :D

Thats what I'm hoping the corpse cart, wolves, cavalry and coach can do, even if not defend, at least provide a deterrent. CC is gonna hurt most flanking units like Fast cavalry. and I can always plonk a ton of raised zombies down :D

RE: New VC, 3k points, Waldenhof Army

Core troops - don't you need min of 3? Because I don't think the wolves or CC count towards your core minimum.

In regards to the magic items, scrolls, powerstones etc you can take multiples of, magic swords, armour etc you can't.

I would have some Ghouls maybe to fill out your min core, they are good flank protectors, maybe drop either the vargulf or coach?

I feel like such a n00b. Christ, this is what I get for rushing like mad over my new book.

Will trial another attempt tonight, and post tomorrow.

RE: New VC, 3k points, Waldenhof Army

Sadly you are short TWO core requirments (it's 4 at 3k points). And only Skeletons, Zombies, and Ghouls count.

A few things to fix, not too terrible:

Lord is good, mabie give him Scabscrath, or drop the Scepter and give him the Blood Drinker.
Keep Erik the same or give him Talisman of Lycni, but give Sophia the Sword of Kings. It's hillarious to get to go first and have KB to boot. Beguile makes it even funnier.

Drop the skeleton blocks to 25, drop the spears, give one the Endless Nightmare banner (up to 4 ranks, functions kind of like a war banner in essence if unit is large enough). Get another block of skeletons for 3, and get a block of zombies or something. They can hold flanks for your 3 central units.

Drop a few black knights for points perhaps? Screaming banner on the GG is funny, keep it. Or swap BK and GG banners since your general does not benefit from it. If your general has Terror sword and BKs have the Screaming Banner...I think he'll make units take 3 Dice terror tests (at the very least when you're charging) which will work well.

Vargulfs rock. Black Coach rocks.

Just a few tweaks and you can have a very powerful army going.

Right, thanks to the sterling advice of the people here, and some deep meditations on life, the universe and everything, I have reorganised the list so its a bit more, well, legal :D
I'm pleased with the characters, in two turns of good casting, I could feasibly double the size of the army.

I'm happy with my characters, and I want to try and stay clear of the more, uncivilised troops, as this army is a continuation of my Army of Sylvania army, representing state troops rather than a normal undead horde (although I miss my crossbows, and my living troops)

So, better? Worse? At least its now legal ::)

I like everything, except Sophia. A 6+ armor and 6+ ward save isn't great. You're probably better off with the Sword of Kings+Nightshroud and hoping for that Killing Blow, instead of hopping to kill someone at -1 AS and hope for the ward to save you. Granted it wont work against a few armies (Ogres, thats when you throw lots of skeletons with Terror upgrade at them, mwhahha) but it's a very nice little combo imo. Works best on a wight sadly, since they are more resiliant and have 5+ KB.

Because I'm a stickler for neatness, drop any 25man skely unit that a character i joining to 24 :D gets you some extra points to buy the SoK.

Hmm, interesting point. I know a 6+/6+ is naff as hell, but considering her hits are going to be at -3 AS anyway, I thought it more likely that a 1 in 6 chance of getting killing blow.
