Does anyone have experience with crypt shields versus great wight blades? I'm trying to decide how to equip them and would appreciate any words of wisdom.

personally i use them with great blades. buffed up with a liche priest righteous smithing, a necro's vanhells dance and a wight king's lord of bones ability the will kill literally anything. you can also buff them up with a couple of mystic shields instead but depends on why you need them really.

Great wight blades are considered generally better, since Rend of -1 (at least) nullifies the Crypt Shields completely.

And most opponents would take some rending weapons in their army, just to deal with 3+ heavies.

I can never seem to get away from rend. Undead shields are the worst kind imo.

Skaven: Most attacks are 1 damage giving skaven a bonus save in most cases
Dark Elf: +1-2 save in close combat is amazing
Stormcast: re-rolling 1s is always awesome
Seraphon: most rend is -1, ignoring it is awesome
WoC: 5+ to mortal is amazing

Undead shields mean that, not only are you losing the +1 save but since its rend, youre getting -1 which really sucks. Blood Knights for example, are 3+ to non rending attacks and 5+ to -1 rend.

The only time I would ever put shields on my undead is when I'm up against a shooting army with lots of no rend shooting. This is probably what they are designed for, since undead theme is to slowly walk toward a gunline, so their shields help in that case.

AoS is all about rending and mortal wounds and most people build their lists with this in mind.

I always liked the Great Wight Blades. Especially if their is a Wight King with an Infernal Standard. Between the two banners, you can slow down the wounds they take. In my opinion.

Yeah, if you're taking them for offense, take great weapons, but if you want a tougher unit, and it's at all an option for you, take tomb guard with their superior tomb shields. If you do field tomb guard, you're far better off with swords than halberds. 3+ to hit, 4+ to wound from the swords on the surface looks the same as 4+ fto hit, 3+ to wound from the halberds, except that like grave guard they get double damage on 6s to wound, and more successful hits means more wound rolls means more 6s.

It's not a huge difference, you can go with halberds if you like the look of them a lot more, but they're technically just not as good.

Both are better than grave guard with shields, though, because the tomb guard shields are just that much better.
