Finally doing a liche/wight king for my undead army.

Not sure if I like the green or the blue better. The BSB will get a matching color scheme, which ever I choose.

Opinions?

Elsewhere in the army the spirit hosts are getting the blue treatment. I don't really care if the king/bsb are different or the same; i see no real thematic reason why there can't be different color ethereals in the same outfit, but just for context, I thought I'd share the blue in a more realistic light.

Thanks for the input all. While I really enjoy the smoothness of the blue, the more I look at it, the more I think the green is the way to go for this guy. Maybe its because I have so many blue spirit hosts and I want the general to stand out a little. Maybe its that the green pops better next to skeletons. Who knows.

Eitherway, after some testing and thinking it over while I worked on some more skeletons last night, I think Mr Green is going to come out on top. :)

He looks great, man. How did you paint him?

Thanks!

I used:
  • Black primer
  • VMC Peacock Green
  • Foundry slate grey light
  • Andrea white hightlight #2 (basically just an ivory)
  • Black ink
  • VMC transparent green / Citadel green wash (i played with both)

pretty straight forward: Prime black. base green. start working increasing amounts of grey into the green till the hightlight were nearly pure grey. Then black ink over all the crevices, and over most of the lower half of the figure. Then transparent green over everything. Then start with green and the ivory mixed in, continuing to high light less and less area (moving upward). When I get to nearly pure ivory, I do another green wash, then maybe another tiny ivory highlight just on the tips of things, sword blade edge, etc.

If you want to be more dramatic, then do some more black ink in the lower half too.

I took some step by step pics of the blue version I'm going to post up shortly, and the technique is the same for green, just a different base color and ink.

hope that helps some.

Thank you. A great looking effect and a fantastic tutorial! Bookmarked for when I pick up some of those lotr spirit hosts.
