I'm just wondering if it's made out of Finecast, or out of the resin that GW used prior to the whole Finecast debacle.

The reason I ask is that I heard the new Tyranid bonesword upgrade pack is made from the old resin (the kind used on the Ork barricades set, for example) and I'd much prefer to deal with that stuff than with Finecast (which I've managed to avoid completely thus far).

It is finecast, I received a set last week. All the shields where ok but the bat head on top of the banner had bubbles and so a bat wing is totally broken :(

I almost prefer getting broken/miscasts, because it means I get a free set! All those glorious bitz & pieces, in DUPLICATE!

I do understand how frustrating it would be if you were working on a project, eagerly anticipating those parts, only to get one completely buggered. Sorry if this is off-topic, but where exactly DO they get the "Fine" in "Finecast"? Just curious...

Brahm,
happily collecting extra bitz from miscasts since 1989...

Yes, or your local hobby store that you bought it from. If you go to GW, they MAY make you return the defective one to get the right one. THEY ARE NOT REQUIRED TO DO SO! They do this solely at their discretion, and often use these pieces in their auctions or store-based projects. I have an understanding with the owners of my local gaming store; under no circumstances are they required to take back the defective product in order to obtain a new one from GW, and so they don't.

They should. I've never ordered direct from GW (except when I was a supplier) so I can't say for sure, but I'm very confident that if you were to get a bum cast, simply call the trolls and they'll be able to help you out. Offer to send them pictures of the damage or miscast, and they'll likely just toss a new one in the post for you.

I have never gotten a miscast or a broken finecast, and have never seen any bubbles that wouldnt be covered over by paint.
I have asked the 2 stores I shop at and neither have had any of their customers report such a thing either. The finecast problems are very overhyped.

Well that maybe Sanai, it does suck :suck: a lot when you are on the receiving end of a finecast with bubbles that can't be fixed because the bubble is almost as big as the part itself and there for crumbles to dust like a staked vampire.

Never seen that happen, and ive bought the following finecast purchases-
Aristocratic vampire
Dark Eldar Archon
Dark Eldar Lahmean
Fenbeast
Dark Emissary
Coffin Lid Shields
VC Upgrade Kit

Some of these I got from the gw webstore, the others from two different retail brick and mortar stores. Neither store has had any reports from customers of miscasts or bubbles or anything, so you can understand my skepticism.

I vastly prefer finecasts level of detail and lightness to metal, even going as far as trying my best to purge metal entirely from my armies (I always liked plastic minis alot more than metals, im even going to mold my current old oop classic metals and recast them in greenstuff)

Maybe the quality control in Australia is just better?

I'm looking at this, good vs bad.

Varghulf: the fur on the head has flat surfaces, fixed with some plastic putty and a little sculpting tool to make the fur again(3 small area's), bubble on the nail so it broke of, fixed with plastic putty(new top of the nail).
Female Vampire: No problems
Krell: No problems
Konrad: No problems
Carstein pack: 1 Bat wing on the banner crumbled to finecast dust. 2 or more bubbles. The shields where fine.
I got some Blood Knights on ebay, they should be in soon hope they are good. cross fingers.
Forgeworld BSB, needed a little bit of putty to get the connections correct on the banner.
So varghulf was fixable and not a big problem, the banner, no way I can fix that. I do prefer plastics and resin over metals if available. In time will replace my metals with resin/finecast/plastics.
But don't think there is no problem albeit maybe not so severe as some people rage on forums and youtube, perfect rainbow clear sky sunshine fluffy bunny paradise it is not.

The initial finecast runs had horrible failure rates, I bought some of the tk second wave releases, and they came as sheets of resin with the models needing cutting out. Also bought the new krell and isabella, who were much better, but krells axe haft was twisted.

Another problem with finecast is if you aren't very careful with packing it long bits can bend out of shape due to pressure, seen it on an orc rock lobber.

I don't mind finecast, just wish they had perfected it more before release.

I haven't gotten the Von Carstein upgrades but my boyfriends banners of rage and blasted standards were decent looking. My other finecast stuff, female vampire lord has an issue with her neck thingy. My vargulf had problems all over. I bought an Ur-Ghul (to convert to a strigoi...) and it was missing a chunk out of one shoulder.

As for things being bent, with other resins I've worked with you can just stick it in some hot water and bend it back. My local GW owner (who we always bring stuff from Games Day, gave them a coat rack and whatnot) gave me a slightly broken Vlad which was nice he's just missing a handle off his sword.

I don't mind filling in a bubble or two especially considering the level of detail finecast gives us but with my Ur-Ghul it was a bit ridiculous.
