Hi all,

First play with Helm of Commandment last night and I am sure that it isnt as powerful as I think it is.

So according to the wording of the rules I nominate a unit to use the WS of my model wearing it.

Now is this in both turns, mine and my opponents? There doesnt seem to be any indication about when I should be declaring this and I got all confused and used it in my opponents turn against a different unit (because neither of us could see any limit which would stop me).

How moronic have I been in this application? Can I use it in my opponents turn? When is the "best" time to declare its usage?

Its a brilliant bit of kit (I can now see what everyone has been talking about), much better on the battlefield than on paper. However was I cheating through ignorance again? I try to get these rules right but they be so complicated for the small of mind :(

Yes you can use it on both turns.

Not moronic at all, you can use it on your and your opponents turn.

Helm of commandment is an absolutely brilliant item and I use it in 95% of my games.
Just remember, you cannot use it if the wearer is in close combat. I suggest fighting his battles before any others. That way if you get away from combat, you can use it again in other combats.

Its the best item in the VCs book, hands down.

You use it in the combat phase, yours or your opponent's. It doesn't say when you have to declare it but you're going to know where you need it, and a lot of the time, so will your opponent :) Just say who is getting it before their combat is resolved, or at the start of the combat phase, doesn't make much difference usually. Lasts for the duration of the phase and you're free to use it on another unit in the following combat phase.

Also remember the Lord can use it even if his unit is in combat, as long as he is not in base contact with any enemy. It can even be used if he has just ended a combat in the same phase iirc, as he is now out of combat (check the faqs).

No he cannot (check the FAQS)

Agreed, the Helm of Commandment is a great item, and it looks like you were playing it correctly to me.

The Lord would not be able to use the Helm if his unit is in combat, whether he is in base contact or not :

Q. For purposes of the Helm of Commandment, if the unit the wearer
is attached to is engaged in close combat, is he considered to be
'engaged’ and thus unable to use the Helm? (p85)
A. Yes.

However, you certainly can use it if he is in combat and it ends that same phase, assuming you finish the combat first before the unit you want to buff :

Q. If a Vampire with the Helm of Commandment is engaged in
combat at the start of a Close Combat phase, is he allowed to use the
Helm's effects to bolster a friendly Undead unit if his combat is
resolved before theirs? (p85)
A. Yes.

Wow I am actually quite shocked, 1 that I got it right and 2 that finally I find a piece of equipment which is as cool and useful as it appears to be.

Mwah hahaha now onto my next victim.

Thanks all
