Is it possible to utilise the "spectral hunters" special rule when moving via van hels?

The Hexwraith rules state that the unit to be nominated for damage is done in the "remaining moves subphase" indicating that its probably not possible. Unless I've missed something?

It would be awesome if we could do this since move through unit, free reform to face unit again, van hels through unit again (not sure if free reform is allowed here to allow for a third try?). This could be used to annilate a unit of knights in one turn :vampire3:

/I dont see it being possible to do it 3 times, unless you had a loremaster or some other way to cast vans twice, but doing it twice, once in move and once in magic phase would work, since vans says to do the move as if it were in the remaining moves part of the movement phase.

sorry if that seems like rambling but i have been drinking all night.

you would still get the free reform because the hex's get to free reform during the remaining moves phase and would therefore get to do it as result of the spell

This will work great even when your first drive by ends behind the enemy unit. Van Hells brings them back into their front arc and you can reform facing them... Then if the enemy charges you, you reap the benefits of rerolling their hits from the Van Hels... Rerolling S5 No armor save attacks?? Can you say, "Come at me bro!!"?

Thats great :D Really keen to get some Hexwraiths now.

Of course large units would be a problem, though the two drive bys might be enough to make a medium unit to a smaller dealable one with less static combat res.

EDIT:

With some fancy manuvering you can get the triple drive-by and be in the front of the unit, can also go for slightly off centre and at an angle so can set up a flank charge if they charge the HW, if not then just do more drive-bys :D

Hmmmm, not so sure about that. Spectral Hunter states that it works just in the Remaining Moves sub-phase. Van Hel's movement is just made like a move during that phase but since you are in the magic phase (not Remaining Moves) I think it is allowed to move through units but no hits are resolved.

They just FAQ'd this:

Q: Do Hexwraiths that move through an enemy unit in the Magic
phase due to Vanhel’s Danse Macabre cause hits with their
Spectral Hunters rule like they would in the Movement phase? (p47)
A: Yes.

So, hexwraiths become a little more effective now that they can cause wounds twice in the same turn.

Man this recent FAQ is epic!!!
On a side note, people were concerned that HWs could not make it all the way through a big unit due to being out of march range or the unit is just way too massive. Couldn't the HWs just use half of their movement to move into a unit, reform, use the other half to move directly back out, reform and face the unit again? And now with Vahnel's do that again as many times as you could cast it? That could wipe out an entire unit in one turn, or panic them etc. And as Eggspr said, their rerolls to hit would make them a scary unit to even chance a charge against. Thus making HWs EPIC! (even though they got FAQd and can only heal 1 wound per unit..)

You could do it 10 times but the damage only occurs once, also falls in line with the fact that you can move through multiple units but it states to pick one for damage. It does say per hexwraith, so it would depend on if you want to count the same hexwraith per times moving through the unit, seems a bit dodgy to me though since the "per hexwraith" seems clear that you count each one once.

Ah, but it says "nominate one of those units". So if you move only through one unit say, 10 times, you could nominate 1 unit 10 times. And since the FAQ says a unit moved through by Hexwraiths in the Magic Phase IS affected by the Spectral Hunters rule, it can go through a unit, and therefor cause so many hits during both Remaning Movement sub-phase AND Magic Phase.

Example:

March a HW unit through an enemy unit once, then cast VHD to hurtle them back, then use the Book of Arkhan to do it again. Unlikely to pull off, but legit and possible.

However, it's 3 'o clock in the night now, with some booze behind my molars, so I might be wrong here...

I think Bloodbath was talking about moving in and out of the unit in the one movement, I'm just saying that it would only count for one load of hits :) ie- you can move them in and out 3 times and still only get 1 S5 hit per HW.

Also technically HW didn't get FAQ'ed to only heal one wound, only vampire units did  (GW could have easily added Vampire and Ethereal units in the FAQ clarification, but they didn't....)

Oh Gilbo  lol we argued that in another thread so we'll just forget I brought up that parenthetical reference

But yes I meant go in a unit and out from the same side just once. Cause people were saying it wasn't always a sure-tactic to go all the way through, say, a horde if those hexies couldn't march. - but if you were harrying their flank you could just penetrate and then back out, no need to pass all the way through.. --and do it all night with enough viagra danse macarbe ;)

No probs Bloodbath :D Yes only going in a bit and then out is a good tactic if you can't go all the way through the unit, it increases the range of the ability :) I thought you were trying to imply that from this mulitple hits would apply, I apologise for my premature assumption.

"Yes only going in a bit and then out is a good tactic if you can't go all the way through the unit, it increases the range of the ability"

Viagra Danse Macabre. I'm cracking right the eff up. And don't stress premature assuming. It happens to lots of guys. At least that's what all those ladies told me before they put their shoes back on and left all mad.

(Okay, I'm finished making dick jokes. This is just too funny to me.)

Sorry to bring this up again, but I've seen it argued that if a unit of HW go into one side of a unit and exit out of that same side then they aren't going "Through" the unit, just into it. I love this tactic and I use it every chance I, I just want to make sure that I'm not involentarily cheating someone on killing a unit of HW's. Also, how far in does the unit have to go to get all of the attacks, for instance if all of the bases pass through the unit but only the very edge of one passes through does this still count or does the entire base have to pass through?

It doesn't say "directly through", it doesn't say "straight through", it says "through", i.e. into and out of- no direction is stated or can be implied. If they want to play with semantics, so can we.

I know this is a late response but I would think since any model even partially under a template is affected by said template then clipping a unit with the corner of your HW is enough to cause a hit. Just my opinion, but how my group has always played things like that. If we can't get an answer from GW we try to extrapolate from existing rules.
