I had a 2k battle against my friend who played DOC, who took 2 units of 30 horrors, a blood thirster, and 3-4 flamers. He also took items/daemonic whatevers on 2 heroes of his that did the same attacks as the flamers. Whne going to his house I wanted it to be a nice and fun game so took no more than 9 PD and 1-2 bounds. My army list had 20 GG w/ GW, a WK in there, one hellsteed vamp(Ill never do this again), 2 units of 18 ghouls, one unit of 10 ghouls with a Vlord in there. I had 3 characters in total(Lord, Hellteed, WK). The result was him having about 3-4 more DD than I had PD, and me having 5-6 less DD than his PD. He also keps cating this huge spell that did 2D6+1, D6+1 S attacks.
He obviously wanted to win really badly..
My question...how do you beat this?

Having fought Daemons on a number of occasions now I can tell you we have one surefire tactic they never EVER prepare for. Once you've made you armies - but just before deployment - chuck his models' case out a window.

Sorted. :vampire3:

Other than that, if he wants to cheese you then cheese him back. 3 Vampire heroes with Dark Majesty flying round a Bloodthirster then Banshee scream him? Game over?

I don't think there's any solid strategy that you can utilize to level the playing field against an army like that - Daemons have earned their certain reputation for a reason, after all. ;)

I'd probably go for as much magic as you can feasibly field, and definately go with Ghouls. Seek to engage his Horrors as soon as you can to keep them from flinging their magic missiles, though they do have one that works in Close Combat as well..

Oh and also, Paksos, multiple Auras of Dark Majesty will not have a cumulative effect. Unfortunately.

I would also suggest outrageous amounts of Ghouls and magic. Start with large units and raise them up big and fast. Ghoulkin too, to close the gap quicker. Get the Horrors in combat and the magic missiles do nothing, so get to him asap. If he has any sense he may try to march block with the Bloodthirster, so take zombie blocks on your flanks and a power stone Necromancer to push a VHD through and trap him.

In all honesty, large units of Horrors simply do not die, despite being total arse in melee, so even if you win do not expect a decisive margin.

Tbh, he deserves a slap for using an army like that, but at least its a challenge :)

Agreed. I'm a daemon player myself and I only use 20-30 horrors, although you have to give him credit for paying for all those horrors (that would cost as much as a normal army). I'd use ghouls over skeles against him for sure, as flickering fire usually hurts skeles more than ghouls.

Thanks for all the replies! I really hate him for doing this...he obviously wanted to win so badly that..whatever.. :(
The biggest mistake I probably did was charge my varghulf into his thirster...I mean what was I thinking! I was hoping for regen but...fire whip of whatever...blahh...then he killed my 3 wraith+banshee unit in one round of combat...next turn destroying my general...

From now on I will have no mercy against anything that he throws at me...I cant wait till he plays me with O&G. Terror bomb yay!

About the models for horrors...we just proxy bases

And about the slap...well my friend is a lot older and taller and a LOT more muscled than I am...his arms are huge! I wouldn't dare slap him hehe

Why not just say that you can't use proxies? Sure, maybe he'll go and buy all those models but then after his two hours of glory you just go down the pub where he-- oh wait, he can't afford to buy his own drinks now - and that hot girl at the bar was really looking like she was waiting for one of you to buy her a drink... I'm sure your mate wouldn't mind you going and helping her out while he minds the coats... ;)

They're playing for fun... the goal is not to say not use proxies, but maybe just ask him to tone it down.

Zombie Tarpit a thirster, or engage in a block that has a champion and 6 static CR + musician (skellies + warbanner). Engage with 2 units so you have a champion to die in your round, and his round, that you can heal up in between. Eventualyl he'll pop.

For horrors, hit him with ghouls and deny ranks. If his thirster isn't near, he'll hemorrhage pretty quickly.

VC dont' have much that can engage a thirster and hope to win. Not even our most tooled up character. Static CR will do it.

The more I try and find ways of countering a Thirster other than by static CR the more I realise how hard it is to do. Literally the only reasonable good unit to hit a Thirster with if you actually want to kill it is Bloodknights sans Seneschal and that's neither easy nor reliable. Problem is, against most decent players getting ranked infantry into a 'Thirster to tarpit them is like trying to catch mist.

Against someone with that many Horrors your only two real choices are play to avoid him and go for the draw or ram forwards and hope you can grind him down.

Finally, if you know he likes this kind of build the addition of a couple of Unholy Lodestones and a Skull Staff won't hurt. Most of the Tzeentch spells are short range so he won't be able to avoid the -s to his casting.

I play a guy who uses a pure Tzeench army and all that remotely works is charging in fast with as many Vamps and necros as you can take, giving all vamps Summon Ghouls and one Ghoulkin. Just keep moving and keep large blocks and keep spamming Invocation on a pure Ghoul army. Depending on the battlefield maybe take some Wolves if you can afford to have a wall or create something distracting on his flank.

You just need to keep nothing in a small number and grow your ranks as much as you can before and when you get in his face!

Good Luck!

If you can sucker him into charging a unit of Direwolves, field 7 with a Doom Wolf, then force the challenge. He'll mince the champion by maximum overkill of 5, +1 for outnumbering = 6 dead wolves, leaving one left to pin him in place. Thats when you send in the bloodknights into his flank.

Bye Bye Big Red.
